There is a point to this song's title, actually.
In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Tails was first introduced, and you could play as both of them at the same time. However, you took control of Sonic, while Tails would be a tag-along computer. Since he was a computer, he would be slower than Sonic, and he would always slack off. This shows how one person can let go of another person who they don't love anymore, like in a bad relationship.

People talking about how this song is bitchy and full of teen angst but here's a funny question for you guys: is it really about a break up? I know, it's art and we can interpretate in a lot of different ways, but not a single verse of the lyrics points directly at a romantic relationship. Well, like most of the people in this comment section, I relate with the song, a lot, but the way I see it, it is really about an ended friendship. It sounds like it's about a not so loyal relationship, where one would do everything to the other and get nothing back, just to be abandoned in the future.
Also, there's a hint for this: the title. Sonic and Tails are friends rather than a couple.

Huh... I only see it as a worst relationship between friends. I don't know about romantic relationships but it's most likely about friendship that was gone to shit.

Idk... I've found relationships later in life to hurt way worse than high school bf/gf type stuff. I think, other than hook ups which is basically the norm now, we tend to put more of ourselves into real relationships and that leaves you more vulnerable to lasting hurt...at least in my experience. I still love this music and I'm 35.

These guys certainly have that ish down to a science! But are they working on a new album? Common Courtesy is quite spectacular, if not in my opinion their best work yet!

It has nothing to do with Sonic and Tails. Well in a way it does. In the games Sonic always leaves Tails behind. This song is most certainly about a breakup, but maybe he's leaving her behind or she left him behind. Something like that.

We all interpret songs differently. The song is clearly about being heartbroken, or feeling regretful, and I don't know about you, but when I start to feel things like this I go to my happy place... which for me is playing Sonic games. The idea of feeling the emotions that are in this song, and then saying to a friend "you be tails, i'll be sonic..." 

I dunno, that's just what I get from it.

@bltupper00 I think Hank got it pretty much right on the nose. One of the verses in another song is something to the effect that she would hold him back/down if he let her. To me I feel like this was when they were just building momentum and gaining notoriety, so perhaps she didn't want him to leave again on tour?! I dunno, but 'Sonic always leaves Tails behind' is a very apt description I think
