Dawes - When The Tequila Runs Out Lyrics
Everyone that greeted me, was moving slow and drinking fast
I was lost inside a painting on a wall
A pretty baby with a cigarette, was looking for a place to ash
Stumbling toward the voices down the hall
For two dancers all in white, that no one really knew
There were a lot of leather jackets, there was a haircut reading palms
There was a line outside the bathroom that didn't really move
When the tequila runs out, we'll be drinking champagne
When the tequila runs out, we'll be drinking champagne
When the tequila runs out, we'll be drinking champagne
When the tequila runs out, we'll be feeling no pain
Some girls forgot their bathing suits but felt like jumping in the pool
I was staring at a silhouette, I was blushing like a fool
Letting everyone pretend they hadn't planned it all along
Then our host bust out of his bedroom, with his glasses slightly bent
He gets up on the diving board to tell us how he feels
“Ladies and gentlemen we've begun the initial descent,
And now it's time to pull up on the wheel”
When the tequila runs out, we'll be drinking champagne
When the tequila runs out, we'll be drinking champagne
When the tequila runs out, we'll be drinking champagne
When the tequila runs out, we'll be feeling no pain
On the floor of the living room, I saw my past life passed out
Laying next to her handsome new flame
I didn't recognize his face too much 'cept for the grimace on his mouth
He looked a lot like me, he seemed to be in pain
I didn't hear the picture window break, I didn't see the rising sun
But I could feel the morning breeze
Then I heard her tired voice speak up and say “I think this party's done”
She asked if I could drive her home, and then she added please (Please)
When the tequila runs out, we'll be drinking champagne
When the tequila runs out, we'll be drinking champagne
When the tequila runs out, we'll be drinking champagne
When the tequila runs out, we'll be feeling no pain

Dawes When The Tequila Runs Out Comments
Quality video
Damn I need some tequila.
First time hearing this was last night at the Ryman in Nashville. Fucking awesome!
It starts and ends with a dog, so it's a good video.
This is my favorite Dawes song
I have a lot of memories of this song... all fuzzy.
The Bonfire and BertBertBert lead me to this dopeness. . sunset in Cali + Dawes= good vibes
Those who hate this song just don't understand how to simultaneously appreciated deep folk american roots rock and indie pop anthems. I fucking love this song and Peace in the Valley equally. Both amazing songs for different reasons.
Fucking ridiculous groove.. Honestly didn't see this shit coming from these dudes.
There are many people that we can see in other Dawes videos. I try to recognize them and it makes the video even mure fun.
The ever-present "I liked them before they were cool" contingent represents. Grow up, tragic hipsters.
Am i the only one here for Mandy moore??
This at first glance looks like a genius band having really lost it. Upon deeper review however you will see its genius. Dawes still has they are just expanding.
I really dig this song.. been a fan since their first album and it's simply beautiful to watch a band just absolutely love what they do. Dawes, keep it up. I look forward to many more years of watching you go and write some of the best songs of our generation. Every time I think I've found my favourite Dawes song, another one pops up.. I could literally pick 10+ from across all the albums.
Why is everyone bashing this song?
Its a good song, its about partying, and they took a fuckier beat to it, fack.
Gotta switch it up sometimes..
Catchy tune! Fun riffs. Cool.
Ok...I have come to the conclusion that I HATE Dawes fans..You guys are dismal, and I hope to avoid you, even if one of you needs help....I will walk right over your lifeless body, and carry on....I am not even calling the paramedics, and depending on my mood, I just might kick the shit out of you on the way.
What is with all the hipster fans whinging in the comments.
Compared with the majority of music today, this well above the curve
Bert brought me here.
Is that Chromeo?! You guys are friends?! Of course!
great, now i have to interrupt my dawes kick to switch to a chromeo kick...my wallet will never forgive you, but my soul is loving every second...
This is horrendous.
I quite like this tune
Watch 1:02 to 1:13 closely. What do you think is going through her head?
This. Party. Is. LIT!
I love Dawes. I do not love this
At 02:41 is she putting an imaginary dick in her mouth?
I thought it wasn't thought out either- but staring at the photography is mesmerizing... one or two people moving while everyone is still. I like it more every time I watch it.
Dawes=so great. Add Mandy Moore.. Oh shit peace out.
This is gorgeous
yummy best new song
I am seeing these guys in a very small venue in Wilmington, NC I can't wait!!!
well hes no Ryan Adams lol
Gotten really into this band of late. Fantastic vibe, lyrics, pure. Really loved a little bit of everything or Los Angeles this song not so much...
I don't get why people think this lacks suitable social commentary to be "worthy" or not boring. This character is watching the scenes we're watching and he's cringing, too. "I saw my past life passed out...her handsome new flame I didn’t recognize his face too much ‘cept for the grimace on his mouth. He looked a lot like me, he seemed to be in pain...I could feel the morning breeze... “I think this party’s done” She asked if I could drive her home, and then she added please (Please). --
It's his former life, it's a painful horror, now it's a new morning, and his past asks him please get me out of here PLEASE--this from the one guy who seems sober enough to drive. Well, go ahead and savage the comment now, but this isn't all that bad or shallow of a song.
I heard this song on Bert Kreischer podcast the Bertcast
which episode? thnx
jkl amazing
i hate it when my favorite band makes music i don't like...;)
I thought this was Phish, he sounds like Trey. Overall, I like it, very smooth sounding.
Actually I now think I like this video even more since it pisses off the Marxist diversity religion -to many white people in a video OMG!!!!!!!!! White Supremacy White Privilege Ugh I'm gonna go find a safe space this should be against the law! hahahaa
Lots of people seem to think the lyrics are a step down. I could be way off the mark but it sounds like quite a satisfying metaphor for getting older to me.
Why do people say this is a departure from "their sound" The concept and notion that a band is suppose to cater to your wants and needs is ridiculous. An artist will create. Whether you love it or not, it is your prerogative. The first time I heard this tune I knew it was Dawes and I knew I loved it!!
this has to be a real story
also this is the best song of the year
how do you go from that last album to this?? damn. smh tragic
Killer tune!! Bunch of hipster douchebags!!! Moving slow drinking fast...
I like poundcake when the tequila runs out, i'll tell ya what, just ask Peggy!
Hank Hill
Cool tune has a 80's vibe to me.

I hope the next album will be better than this lol
Cool ass tune
Understanding artists need to change things up, explore, etc., but Dawes, come on, this is really awful.
Most fucking gorgeous arrengement of 2016!
Blake Mills is really something!
isn't this the barenaked ladies?
My favorite band right now. May you never break up.
May your favorite band stay together
I like dis song IDGAF 💯😂
I love that Mandy Moore is in the video. Lol
When the pita runs out, there'll be hummus on the plate.
I didn't think that I was white until I liked this
who are these womens
Jim James is doing backup vocals on the chorus and is in the video (2:34, 4:31), right?? Apologies if this has already been discussed.
haha what the fuck is this
03:36 Califórnia
When is the tour with Keith Urban?
Is that their former drummer Tay in the middle of the third shot?
Not a big fan. But he's dating Mandy Moore? Lucky guy.
Trey Anastasio would be very proud of this righteous tune...or maybe not.
I like it. Bands are allowed to be creative. This is just a new side to them. I still hear their style of cool So Cal style in all of this.
Fans will complain about the "musical departure" but watch and see if this album doesn't outsell the rest of their stuff.
I like it, it's got a great beat. It sounds refreshing and doesn't sound shallow. Just cause it's different? Listen to every Beatles album and each one took a different direction. That means Sgt. Pepper isn't as good as Meet the Beatles? And people didn't like when Bob Dylan changed direction and he's been playing and writing for fifty years already.
Doesn't do anything for me...
These guys are on the right track. Fearless! oh I forgot and f**************king talented.
Thank God the whole album isn't like this. Dawes came through once again despite the doubt that this song cast on the prospects of the album.
Great song, the verses have a really unique melody, hard at first to digest cos' its so different but after a few listens I've really grown to like it.
Very Beckish! Not Bad, Just different. Cool sounds.
Favorite band, glad they are making a new album!
catchy hook mon
The first time i listened to it i almost hated it, thinking its very simple and out of the place . But from the second time and on , it sounded like dawes to me again . i imagine them playing it live along the other masterpieces without sounding like something completely different.
I dont understand the bad reviews, this song is great. Reminiscent of Phish in a way, I like it.
Cristne Vallone ween
who are you and how did you know ween was my favorite band?
Cristne Vallone I didn't know that, but they're amazing and it's what I thought this sounded like. :)
Def reminds me of Ween
Well the album is great so fans can relax. Woot woot!!!
What happens when you have some indie hits and they throw money at you and then procede to fu*k up your mix and lose all the raw sound............never give up control of how or what ur shit will end up sounding like. It's still a nice tune, but nowhere near the Dawes we've all be enjoying. I know change is good..................sometimes.
Those Goldsmith boys have quite the lustrous heads of slow-motion hair.
DANGER DANGE , HUGH PARTY SONG - CAN HEAR IT GOING ON AROUND THE SWAMP
The perfect way to waste your amazing talents.
Complete garbage compared to their old sound. I'm glad I got to see them live with Connor Oberst in Saxaphaw NC before they started putting this shit out. Couldn't even make it through the first chorus. Makes me so upset to hear a band destroy themselves...
+ecleavist good comment..?
Kenneth Richards
Its hard for me to vibe to almost any song I hear for the first time, especially sober. This song did it. Gotta check out more songs now
Heard this on NPR the other day. Great driving music.
Couldn't make it past first minute.
IMMEDIATELY loved this song!
4 great albums, and.... this?
. . . I didn't know they were switching to a Cage the Elephant cover band, and thats an insult to Cage, what the hell happening to these guys? Dawes has some of the best music in creation and they release this crap?
I'm liking this song. it's a good pop song...and catchy. and the lyrics describing the atmosphere and experience at this party is well written still. it's not their best, but Dawes showing they can write a thoughtful pop song. I'm a fan
I enjoy Dawes because of the classic sound and well written songs. This shit falls way short. Mainstream garbage.
I've been a Dawes fan since north hills, and have always compared them to beer. The very first time you drink beer, it does not agree with your taste buds. It is an acquired taste. But once you learn to appreciate the unique flavor and experience that is beer, you will never go back. Everything Dawes does is this way to me. They have a unique sound and they are different from most things in music. Which is why they are compared to so many different artists. This is another example of their acquired taste. I know this song will grow to be appreciated for its unique sound and experience. I commend them for changing it up, because not every song can be a moon in the water or little bit of everything tear jerker. Lighten up and appreciate Dawes' ability to diversify their sound. Zeppelin and many other great artists had a huge array of different genres throughout their albums. I see it as artistic license and musical talent
Was also at rough trade nyc for the debut of this song and it was awesome live
Oh Dawes, we love you but this is bland brother! get back to writing authentic songs.
Nah, the only thing that sounds like this tune are Trey Anastasio songs. That's not a bad thing.
Get off your high horses folks! It's a fun song....
Love the groove. Whether you like the lyrics or not, this is a catchy sumbitch in the Dawes tradition. Love it.
Fantastic song and video guys -- somehow turns scenes of a house party into hilarious and heartful scenes. Made me smile.
Firee your producer, if it isnt broke dont fix it dummy,
Hmmmmm, sadly when a band rather unknown has success doing it their way gets bamboozled by a know it all producer this is what comes out next. Hope the rest of the album can save this turd masterpiece.
