Dawes - Time Spent In Los Angeles Lyrics
These days my friends don’t seem to know me
Without my suitcase in my hand
Where I am standing still
I seem to disappear
But maybe that's how I found you
Maybe meeting you so far away from home
Is what makes it all so clear
But you got that special kind of sadness
You got that tragic set of charms
That only comes from time spent in Los Angeles
Makes me wanna wrap you in my arms
When people ask me where I come from
To see what that says about man
That never lead them there at all
It’s something written in the head lights
Is something swimming in my drink
And if I were the moon
It would be exactly where I fall
Cause you got that special kind of sadness
You got that tragic set of charms
That only comes from time spent in Los Angeles
Makes me wanna wrap you in my arms
I used to think someone would love me
For places I have been
And the dirt I have been gathering
Deep beneath my nails
But now I know what I’ve been missing
And I’m going home to make it mine
And I'll be battening the hatches and pulling in the sails.
But you got that special kind of sadness
You got that tragic set of charms [x2]
That only comes from time spent in Los Angeles
Makes me wanna wrap you in my arms

Dawes Time Spent In Los Angeles Comments
Love the melancholy feel of this tune. And I can't help but hear " baby's feeling funny in the morning" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q11v0JdJb6o
I saw these guys in San Rafael it was a small venue and they totally rocked. Even though they had played a show the night before like 300 miles away, they looked a little beat, yet they still gave the crowd an awesome time = mad respect.
Any Adam Ant fans here? Because this song is really Wonderful.
Hip-Hop is wonderful. I Love it so much. RAPPER!

A bit..
Huge shoutout to VH1 Top 20 Countdown for exposing me to this song when I was 13.
MTV anyone?
So true. Great vibe from song to song. Saw them at the Pilgrimage Festival. Wow. So many influences that take you years back. My new favorite band. May they stay together!
Ive been trying to find this song for 2 hours now. Finally at 440 A.M. i have found it. I heard this song when i was in middle school and a tune of something else lead me to find this song. I forgot how much i loved this song.
I keep coming back to this song year after year. Gives me such a nostalgic feeling of getting ready for school early in the morning. Good days
Nice song...but, the cashet of LA and California is long gone. It's a $hithole unfortunately. Liberals seem to enjoy being displaced by foreigners...
They all look so young holy shot
I remember first hearing this song on VH1 at like 2 AM back when I was just a kid. Forgot about it for a while, but still one of my favorite songs ever.
I've never heard this tune before. This is freaking great. Thank the gods that someone is still interested in writing good lyrics and fitting them inside a envelope of beautiful music.
Come back to Austin ..... we love ya been too long.......Raybann AustinTexas
I love this song.
Probably my very favorite Dawes song-very catchy, has you humming it all day long!
What model organ does he play on
God, the brothers Goldsmith look so young here. How far we've come.
The sound like the Counting Crows!
Something about Dawes just speaks to me in a way I cant explain. I've loved this band for years, listening to this song gives me such a strong feeling of nostalgia and peace..
great well crafted tune, and that stunning young lady looks like a young Diane Lane.
I remember hearing this one morning on VH1 when I was a freshman in high school. It gives me the best memories of better times.
California people really understand this
twoface2001
don't know
twoface2001 understand what
twoface2001 I understand this, cause I've spent time in Los Angeles. The girls there do have a certain kind of sadness, and a tragic set of charms.
fun place, but I'm glad I'm back home.
I'm on my way
reminds me of Foy Vance a bit.
Love the sound of the BOSS VB-2 Vibrato.
I heart Dawes
The drummer looks like my brother
+Graysoul 777 omg you're so right!

Can anyone tell me who the girl in the white dress is? Is she related to Taylor? She's beautiful!
+goldendog159 judging by the end of the video, she's his girlfriend. She's amazing looking. What a smartarse.

They write about California with the same kind of love and sorrow
Just found my new fave song omfg
I was 11 and watching VH1 one morning when I first heard this song. Still one of my favorites and most likely will forever be.

Two Door cinema, pumped up kicks, coldplay. those where the days
I would like to dedicate MY thank you to Guitar Center Sessions for my introduction to this awesome band...Within the last 3 months I have discovered them and TEMPLES (They appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon!).
Nice song, though I find myself afterwards humming "...but there's a warm wind blowing the stars around, And I'd really love to see you tonight..."
Nine people can kiss the fattest part of my ass
Taylor Goldsmith....all you need to know
Great song. Am i the only one who thinks the drummer looks like Art Garfunkle??
How I have never heard these guys I can't imagine. Thank you Tommy Talton for telling me how great they are. I LOVE it.
We loved this song so much, we covered it on the Soulful Sofa Sessions! Come check it out and let us know what you think!
Episode 7: "Time Spent in Los Angeles" - Dawes
We are a fan if no one else is Dawes.
Being a second "gen" Los Angelenos I just love this song...
world is up side down, mumford and sons have support Dawes, they are better from far
so beautiful
I thought these guys were really good. Went to mumford and sons concert last week and bought the album while i was there
This is such great music to SKI to
No it isn't. He's saying he'll head home to get what he's been missing and he knows it won't be easy, so he's battening the hatches and pulling in the sales (which is something you do when a storm is coming).
I want to dispatch a hair stylist to their studio, stat. Great song, though.
i love this song so much <3 the beat and the lyrics just come together
whose the blonde girl in the vid that taylor kisses at the end?
WOW!!.......does your mother know you have such a little potty mouth?. Maybe you should copy her on your posting? Actually, you are the "dumshit" because you just agreed with me so what's your agument?. And I never said they were not a good bad. As a matter of fact, I was the one who introduced my 20 something year old sons to them. Now go get some soap and clean out that little potty mouth of your before I tell your mother.
so pumped to see these guys at lolla
I bet no one came here through Fringe, 'cause there were only two words audible from this playing in the background... :D
Holy SHIT! Bob Dylan is friggin amazing on the drumkit!
THE TERM "BATTEN THE HATCHES".....MEANS TO "PREPARE FOR TROUBLE"........IT IS USED IN THE WRONG SENSE IN THIS SONG.....
@duckiedale80 I don't get it. You are saying that me liking a film that has low approval ratings from critics and that most original Halloween fans hate is trendy? Don't try and change the subject...this bands blows major amounts of ass!
@elicore3407 A fan of Zombie's Halloween complaining about trendiness. Oh, the irony!
@23Shinin23 i listened to this all summer. lol its so relaxingg.
This song is a reflection on my life except for the ending which has yet to happen because I'm so shy haha. :)
@hazor777 i feel the same way hazor. give blitzen trapper a try. their the best band out nowadays imho.
Finally, music with lyrics that have some depth! Thank you Dawes, and thanks for taking the time to play for Occupy in DC and NYC. You did the right thing, I hope the music industry will be kind to you, and you become a classic band that will still be known in future decades.
I heard this song while I was driving home this week. Listening to CBC Radio 2 Drive. after 5:00pm.
Great moody song. They also play new alternative music like this one....
great song!
Heard this song in a store, stuck in head for days, googled lyrics to find artist name. So catchy. So much of the good part of pop music.
@lclax22 He's so versatile
@themacjs No apologies needed! :)
@themacjs I think they're cute, but I was commenting on someone else's comment about them not being good looking. I was trying to make a point that good music is good music and it doesn't matter what the artists look like. But yes, I agree with you. They are definitely cute!
How does this song have so few views?
Great sound!! excellent words & music put together!!
I love it, I also can't get it out of my head.
the girl reminds me of the girl in lullaby by shawn mullins
When you are judged by Pro's in the Music business and they like you ....You got something. They got what it takes. This song is a very pretty Love song. Period.
i had no idea what this song was called and its been stuck in my head for monthss
Whoever doesn't love this band is just crazy. They are amazing songwriters and performers. Who cares if they are not really hot. Good music is good music and it is hard to find. Dawes is bursting with talent.
@SuperBlackopsnerd How can I enjoy music that is shitty? And actually my mom is dead and my dad is well I dont know where the fuck he is... So and yeah I misspelled something? So what... Im dyslexic but that doesnt stop me from writeing... We can sit here and argue but I wouldnt do that with someone as pugnacious as you its pointless so shut the fuck up and stop trying to get your point across because it doesnt matter
@SoFarAreWe Um Goldsmith? And actually Im a published writer and Im 13? I only take pride in one thing I do and that's writing... And Im not hateing... If I wanted to hate I would say "man this guy is ugly as fuck and cant sing for shit! just the thought of his voice makes my ears bleed!" but no im not like that... So why don't you get your facts strait? Then actually try to insult me.
honestly, who cares if a musician looks good or not. if their music is good, that's what counts. i love these people. real lyrics and music. <3
Its not often you see music like this. It's not often where someone doesn't write about partying or having a good time, and uses actual instruments in their songs. This band makes me smile. It's puts personal thought back into music. I love it. -3
This band is horrible. The main line in the chorus is rushed and doesn't fit into the meter of the song. thumbs down to trendy bullshit
wow. great song and yet.......these unhappy fools...
Excellent performers! Better than Blitzen Trapper, who I had gone to see.
@rburrell11392 Im not hating? Im Actually jealous of him... I wish i could be recognized like him... Im just giving my thoughts of his vocals and pitch which are lacking alot of melody and power... I like the song i mean not one of of my favorites but the lyrics are touching and cute... Im sorry if you thought i was hating cause im not a hater.
@SuperBlackopsnerd You're a fucking idiot. This is music. And if you're doubting his vocal power I suggest you listen to the song blood and guts by Middle Brother. Quit hatin.
Give it up for Little Orphan Annie on the drums!
I liked this better when bob dylan sang it and called it "lay lady lay".
how does this video have so little views when it's so fantastic?
And hes ugly as balls
He sounds sooo hollow... I mean its good but no power and so empty
heard this on vh1 and i think its a great song but it needs more fans cuz they r fantastic
