Dawes - That Western Skyline Lyrics

Oh Lou, I'd like to let you know that I do not feel welcome.
All the birds, the trees, the falling snow;
No, they were not made for me.
And though this is where her heart resides, we met in California.
She saw a city's promise reaching through my eyes,
And she turned her self away.

Well how I curse that western skyline.
And yet I thanked it for my start.
Oh Lou, no my dreams did not come true.
No, they only came apart.

So I followed her here to Birmingham, where the soil is so much richer
And though my aching pride might guide my hand, she did not ask for me to come.
So I wait for her all through the day, as if I wait for her surrender.
And every time I get her to look my way, she says I'm not where I belong.

But I watch her father preach on Sundays.
I know the hymnals all by heart.
But oh Lou, no my dreams did not come true.
No, they only came apart.

Ohhhh, oh oh oh oh
Ohhhh, oh oh oh oh
Ohhhh, oh oh oh oh
Ohhhh, oh oh oh oh

All the snow fall this time of year, it's not what Birmingham is used to
I get the feeling that I brought it here, and now I'm taking it away.
But let's share one more drink together, before I go reload my car.
And oh Lou, no my dreams did not come true.
No they only came apart.

Ohhhh, oh oh oh oh
Take me home,
Ohhhh, oh oh oh oh
Ohhhh, oh oh oh oh
Ohhhh, oh oh oh oh

Dawes That Western Skyline Comments

Love this song, great harmonies, reminds me of the band, these guys are definitely one of the best out there now

  2. D.... N....

saw these guys at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael (a venue that was founded by members of the Grateful Dead). Here's my review. They looked a little tired... they had just played a show in Quincy, CA. the night before... so it considering it was a back to back... they actually did awesome. The venue was small and the sound guy had Taylor's guitar up wayyy too f'ing loud... This group hovers between being a folk band / a jam rock band / and an up tempo pop rock band like late Tom Petty / for this reason... it's hard to know what kind of venue they truly belong in... Their new pianist is amazing... he played an incredible rendition of "A Little Bit of Everything." In many ways... they music that night was BETTER than the recordings... however just couldn't help but feel for the dudes they looked truly drained out...

  3. D.... ....

This was the first thing I heard one morning on the radio when I woke up. I lay there thinking, Oh my God, what a song.

  4. J.... C....

This song is a work of art! Love it

  5. G.... F....

Griffin Goldsmith is one on the best drummers alive. No question.

  6. N.... ....

    3:16 that Levon Helm fill

  7. J.... K....

I also had a conversation with Lou the last time I was in Birmingham.

  8. S.... H....

Who says there is no new good music. I know this is from 2010 but what amazing lyrics and the performance is chilling. I literally get goosebumps every time I watch/listen to this. Top 40 music is garbage. This is a masterpiece.

  9. J.... K....

    been there

  10. O.... J....

no my dreams did not come true, they only came apart... thank God for that.

No, my dreams did not come true, they only came apart...a great line for a bad life.

  13. J.... M....

The Eagles of this generation!!! Awesome!

    J.... M....

Jim Maloney No, The Band of this generation

  14. R.... G....

    good, soul-touching music lives

  15. d.... ....

The beginning of something great right there

  16. A.... T....

Rips my heart out every single time. Fuck.

    A.... T....

    Andy Trullinger yep

    A.... T....

    I’m with you.

  17. D.... V....

Wow. Just wow. I could feel my past breezing through me like cold wind on a summer's day.

  18. N.... K....

Just... wow. Amazing performance to a beautiful song.

  19. M.... B....

I still enjoy the drumming on this one.

  20. A.... H....

It's so great when musicians put their emotions to their song. I really love this particular video, 'cause you can't see or hear those emotions in the recorded version.

  21. A.... L....

Honestly probably the most under-appreciated band out there

  22. B.... B....

Such a beautifully sad, melancholy story in the song. A soulful lament that begins and ends with Lou.

  23. r.... s....

I can't stop listenning to them ! So Great.

  24. P.... B....

Can never get enough of this brilliance. Just surpassing ...

  25. f.... ....

    Pop brought me here

  26. G.... W....

They are really amazing! If you are able to catch them live, you will be amazed

    G.... W....

Georgia Wade I saw them live two weeks ago and still can’t stop thinking about it. They put on an absolutely incredible show.

  27. j.... ....

Prolly still their best live song............spellbinding to say the least.

  28. g.... ....

    Dawesome

  29. B.... M....

It's like watching "the last waltz"
And yes the video production is that good. But the band...I'm so excited to have stumbled upon this band. Can't wait wait to see them live.
    The Band(Rick Danko)
    N. young
(Guitar playing so Springsteen it's awesome)
-and the lyrics and song writing...
every song powerfully, refreshingly, new but familiar and empowering way. This band will inevitably grow to help define quality American music that's been composed this decade, so far.

    B.... M....

    I was just thinking that.

  30. J.... C....

What masters of dynamics and group playing these guys are.  The swells and falls are just impeccable, and reflect each lyric.  Pay attention, this is an incredible band of this era.

    J.... C....

    PERFECTLY stated.

    J.... C....

    @John Chapman Absolutely True !

    J.... C....

and they're still killing shit in 2017

  31. R.... R....

    Very, very talented band.

  32. K.... O....

Its like The Band, Jackson Browne, and CSNY had a baby. My God they are good...

  33. c.... l....

if your a fan of music and you don't enjoy this you can get the hell out

  34. j.... ....

dawes did this song frontin for dylan in champaign, IL on 4/25/13. prolly the single best live performance that i have ever seen in my life and i saw many of the original band concerts.

  35. s.... ....

if were gettin into it like that, they aint canucks either

  36. A.... C....

Taylor and company will never know how deeply they touched my soul and how much they've helped me survive. These guys are musical heroes.

  37. A.... W....

His voice is so beautiful. There are so many songs about the West coast, but this is definitely my favorite!

  38. c.... ....

His face at that last note pretty much sums up the entire thing. Good music that even gives the lead singer a smile.

  39. D.... H....

Saw them open for Dylan in Akron and they just blew the roof off! The crowd loved 'em! GREAT live! The Band reincarnated.

  40. E.... W....

This sounds like it could be The Band, and I mean that as a sincere compliment.

  41. J.... J....

It really doesn't get much better than this. Fucking love this band.

  42. I.... L....

    Agreed.

  43. E.... W....

They would have fit in perfectly in the '70s. they're keeping that era alive

  44. K.... K....

    thanks !

  45. s.... h....

    Amazing work guys!

  46. b.... ....

    dynamics to die for

  47. g.... ....

    Dawesome!

  48. M.... P....

Looked away, Thought I was listening to The Band

  49. M.... ....

This is what every starting band should aspire to......really good

  50. j.... ....

yup, they're good. don't really remind me of anyone but them, very unique vibe. prolly much better than what you folks think they sound like.

  51. F.... ....

from 0:00 on is just amazing.. :)

  52. N.... A....

Just saw these dudes over here in Australia ... I'm an instant fan. Keep on rockin!

  53. m.... ....

    @steamshuttle Definitely more like Danko.

  54. t.... ....

    Tele love. Great tune.

  55. B.... ....

I can't listen to the studio version after the live one. Wish this would get more airtime then time spent in LA too. Great dynamics with these guys.

  56. C.... E....

These guys made a guest appearance on the NBC TV show, "Parenthood." I had never heard of them until then. Nice song.

  57. s.... ....

i think he sounds more like Danko than manuel

  58. j.... ....

Just beautiful, reminds me of "the Band"..: a R.Manual song with even the same kinda voice Richard had.

  59. H.... M....

@alexkane1 Are you even listening to the lyrics? Has this sound been created before? sure. But those lyrics are anything but smug.

  60. g.... f....

they remind me of the band mixed with wilco

  61. M.... ....

Very good! Good musicians and well rehearsed.

  62. m.... ....

God, I would love to see this live. :)

  63. a.... k....

I cant understand the appeal of "DAWES." Good lord this music has been done soooo many times before. And as far as the Zevon parallel... where the hell is the satire and humor. These guys are too smug and conceited to even be compared to Zevon. Man they look good though, it is clear that all their time and effort spent to appear "authentically vintage" has worked.

  64. f.... ....

Frontmen of Deer Tick + Delta Spirit + Dawes = Middle Brother!!! Look 'em up! :)

  65. M.... ....

Can't wait to see these guys again!

  66. T.... ....

Jackson Browne with soul, Simon and Garfunkel with balls, The Eagles without being pretentious, Neil Young with great vocals… or just Dawes cause one day that is all you will have to say.

  67. S.... ....

@jaydilts wait, you bought actual physical media?

  68. O.... Y....

@mrbill224 Yeah I think the comparisons these guys get to Bruce Springsteen are rediculous. They're much more like The Band!

  69. I.... H....

    They deserve success

  70. g.... ....

Saw these guys open up for Alison Krauss & Union Station last week at the Beacon Theater in NYC. What a pleasant surprise! Great singing, playing and songwriting. It's refreshing to hear a contemporary band with some maturity and substance - and vocal harmonies. This song in particular definitely sounds very influenced by The Band (a good thing in my opinion) with a little something extra all their own. I will definitely go and see these guys again.

  71. k.... ....

I saw them last night opening for Alison Krauss in Boston. This song was among highlights of the whole night. Thanks for posting.

  72. r.... ....

@lngskater4life check out worlds tallest man, horse feather, great lake swimmers, band of horses, and if you havent yet ray lamontagnes "trouble" album

  73. T.... H....

@jaydilts - Truer words have never been written. Dawes is indeed the spirit of many different folks like Jackson Browne, Gram Parsons, JD Souther, and a whole bunch more folks who helped create country-rock, alt-rock., whatever tag, it's just flat out great music,we can help by spreading the word, I'm buying MP3 gifts for a few friends of Dawes June 6, 2011 release "Nothing is Wrong" I'm really liking these guys....

  74. J.... ....

Just discovered these guys today via The Counting Crows Facebook page. Sweetness. Good Day.

  75. P.... S....

this performance blows the album version out of the water. please re-record it!

  76. D.... R....

@jaydilts We saw them last night in Atlanta. You're right, they are pretty great. We bought their CD and love, love, love it.

  77. S.... G....

i saw this band last nite in houston, tx. AMAZING!

  78. l.... ....

Music is reverting back to its roots. The Avett brothers, Mumford and sons, Dawes, I love this and All I want is more. I hope to see these guys live very soon. where can I find tour dates?!

  79. P.... ....

    The Band reincarnated.

  80. T.... H....

Taylor's voice is a thing of pure, total beauty. As much as I love these guys being my obscure, unknown pleasure, they really deserve to be bigger.

  81. L.... h....

@mrbill224 absolutely!!! and they flippin played letterman last nite with Robbie Robertson!! and although the BAND is one of my all time favs, i wish dave woulda let dawes play one song. they are phenominal and they bring back that sound that hasnt been around since the days of the BAND and ccr and bread and csn and on and on...... I am soo inlove with DAWES!!!! R.I.P. RICHARD MANUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  82. J.... D....

Can't believe they didn't play this in TO last time they were here. They let this guy Corndawg take over half their set.

  83. f.... ....

Folk rock... I'm a huge folk music fan... but its rare to actually find a true folk rock band that is actually folk... cuz they're usually countrylike..
    I LOVE THESE GUYS

  84. M.... S....

    @bowiehs agreed

  85. J.... D....

Very underrated lyrics. I got this album since the lead singer from my favorite band, Deer Tick, says this is his favorite band. Thank God. I bought extra copies for everyone I know with good taste, and they love it too now. I caught them live at Lollapalooza. I haven't seen anyone so into a performance since Ben Harper live years ago. Great talent. This band is going to be huge. Get the album, you'll love them.

  86. S.... G....

Bob Segar and CCR collide to make something watered down, but enjoyable.

  87. A.... ....

I haven't been able to stop listening to their album since I got it... two weeks ago.

  88. M.... J....

I don`t think the lead singer know how powerful his voice really is.

  89. J.... D....

Can't wait to see these guys in November in TO.

  90. a.... ....

    I believe! Hallelujah!
    Devistating performance.

  91. i.... ....

Damn. Had to comment again. Fucking brilliant, guys. Come to Boise please.

  92. i.... ....

    Greatness
