Davis, Paul - Magnolia Blues Lyrics

I don't know, if y'all have a dope problem in Atlanter, but I know that, uh in Jackson MS, there has been actually marijuana SOLD on the streets
They out... they out in the street sellin it. The police can not contain ALL the marijuaner that's in Jackson. That's the truth

I was born in Soso MS, ain't that cool
Well the folks at Soso, the Lord knows, they sure can groove
We used to wait for Little Richard on the radio
Waiting for another Fats Domino
Oh, oh...
Oh Lord, you gotta help me through these low-down Magnolia Blues
MS Fred used to sing his a-low down blues
We all had a hard time, but we'd find somethin' to do
I played the two-finger boogie just as hard as I could
Little Black Charlie used to dance so cool
Oh Lord, you gotta help me through these low-down Magnolia Blues
Soso MS, sweet Magnolia Blues
Soso MS, sweet Magnolia Blues
Soso MS, sweet Magnolia Blues, ooh...
Uh-huh...

I played the two-finger boogie just as hard as I could
Little Black Charlie used to dance so cool
Oh Lord, you gotta help me through these low-down Magnolia Blues
Down in Soso MS, sweet Magnolia Blues
Soso MS, sweet Magnolia Blues
Soso MS, sweet Magnolia Blues, ooh...
Uh-uh... Soso blues...

But if you've ever seen somebody high on marijuaner, uh, you can tell, they cuticles are dialated
Now I learned that in the Nar, in the Narcotics Trainin' Prevention in Tupelo MS.
They teach that ever' 6 months, and we went up there, and, to see it
And they had a boy that, that tried that marijuaner pill
And, uh, his eyes rolled back upon his head, and he liked to, he liked to kicked over
He was shakin and uh, hollerin', uh
He was hollerin' that "Trip Out" just as loud as he could
And that's what he, uh, he was actually what they call "Freakin Out"

Davis, Paul Magnolia Blues Comments
  1. C.... C....

I was there! A 16 year old kid who got turned on to WZZQ 102.9 It changed my life....! They played the best rock. They would play full albums. The DJ's would answer the phone when you called and ask for a song to be played. They were Cool to say the least. At times, my buddies and I would be out riding around listening to ZZQ and drive to the station on Beasley Rd. We would knock on the side door and whoever was there, would let us in. Once inside, we would ALL smoke a doobie and play all our favorite rock songs! Man, this could have been a movie! This station was incredible....! And if you were lucky enough to have experienced it, you know what I'm talking about. One more thing: You were nothing without a ZZQ sticker on the back bumper......

  2. G.... E....

    wzzq rocked

  3. G.... L....

Grew up listening to WZZQ in Jackson Mississippi and I have been to Soso Mississippi. There is a great story about how that comical part ended up on the record. Paul would call his manager or producer in Atlanta and do crazy stuff and didn't even know he started recording them.

  4. T.... ....

Haha working at the BP is Soso in high-school I loved when Rock 104 would play this one

  5. b.... l....

WZZQ had a daddy. WJDX-FM was the original bomb. No commercials ever!! Whole albums played with no interruptions.

  6. G.... B....

Keep up to date with Yahoo Group - Paul Davis Mystery Group. Paul was posting there himself in the last year or two of his life.

  7. K.... S....

hi so so people. just watched the movie about newt knight. he was an awesome man. so anyone who thinks the song was racist , don't know there history

  8. J.... P....

WZZQ was, and forever will remain the best FM radio station of all time. Music is treasured for many reasons; not the least of which are the memories, history, and emotions of the era when the mind first heard it. For those of you who refer to people who like this song as racist, or the song as racist, thank you for showing your racism and "stereo" typing (pun intended) of Southern people and Southern history. We enjoy being "misunderestimated"! And you are hereby forgiven! We prefer that you continue as you are!!

    J.... P....

I wholeheartedly agree! It was what I grew up on and this tune was one of my favorites. Every time I hear this, I go back in time.

    J.... P....

so so right. I'm a Louisiana girl

  9. m.... ....

trivia... what was the last song played on zzq? i no. ms 103 can suck it!! saw a zzq bumper sticker in anchorage, ak in '79.

    m.... ....

    The End, by the Doors.

  10. g.... d....

this is not a blues, this is bullshit

  11. J.... L....

Currently living in Laurel, and this song is not very complimentary if you listen closely. Ha, well...I'm from the North...I've heard this on the radio twice now and got curious about who recorded it. I never would've guessed Paul Davis.

  12. r.... j....

Hell, I grew up in Soso

  13. j.... a....

    WZZQ !!!!!!!

  14. J.... F....

Negative.. there's a piggly wiggly in Canton, MS, And two that I know of in Norfolk and Brunswick Virginia

  15. n.... ....

I remember back in the early 80's when I was going to school as Ole Miss listening to this song.   Great song.

Too bad MS  is a Teabgger cesspool  now.

    n.... ....

    the teabagger lost in MS!

    n.... ....

+nowonderI4get. Yeah it is a much better place now than when it was still run by racist democrats

  16. B.... B....

walking the streets of the 'big easy' one time and the people behind me were talking about a song that they had heard on a great radio station in Jax, Ms. some song about Soso Mississippi. they loved the song and loved the radio station. i turned and told them the radio station was WZZQ and the name of the song. i also ask them where they were from, they said Germany. i really miss Paul and ZZQ,

  17. L.... N....

    Hello Soso..........my home town too

  18. P.... T....

this album was earlier than 1978.  "Ride em Cowboy" which is on this album was on the charts in 74-75.  "Singer of Songs--Teller of tales" is his 1978 album that has "I Go Crazy" and "Sweet Life".

    P.... T....

Nope "ride em" was from the 1974 album by the same name, 1976 gave us the follow-up album 'southern tracks' which contained 'thinking of you' and 'superstar', both of which barely grazzed the bottom of the charts.

  19. s.... ....

Did your parents have any children that lived? I bet they regret that!

    s.... ....

Is that you John Wayne? Is this me?

  20. D.... E....

This song definitely brings back memories of growing up in MS listening to David Advock and "tunes till two" on ZZQ!

  21. d.... b....

ignorant music ,for ignorant racist folks !!

    d.... b....

How the hell is this racist? It's a white dude poking fun at other white dudes. The only thing ignorant & racist here is YOU

    d.... b....

Bless your RACIST little heart ! ! !

    d.... b....

How dare you say that I am a racist I'm a proud Native American

    d.... b....

    diego bauzil you fucken racist

  22. A.... ....

That is an authentic Mississippi accent still spoken in Mississippi and other southern states, mostly in rural areas. But I doubt there is anyone as green and gullable as the gentleman speaking.

  23. D.... T....

Jackson radio has sucked since. Cobweb rock, country, religion and soooooul(or whatever it's called) . Nothing new you have to go to the coast(CPR) or try to get 103 in Hattiesburg to listen to something made in the last few years.I like Sweet Home Alabama(turn it up) but it gets old after the 8 millionth time.

    D.... T....

I remember when ZZQ turned into MISS-103 and Sergio or Wayne or one of those DJs locked themselves in the building and was very upset at the demise of ZZQ.

  24. D.... T....

ZZQ the last song was The End for hours

  25. n.... ....

    ZZQ - I remember that.

  26. m.... ....

it was a sad day for Mississippi music when ZZQ became MIS 103.

    m.... ....

mstate62 Indeed it was, sat up listening until the last riff was played

  27. Y.... W....

So glad this song was found. Really enjoyed it when it came out, but could never find it after i moved from Miss. ZZQ has no equivalent (sic) yet.

  28. B.... ....

Anyway--I remember David Adcock at ZZQ, TYQ and STZ...almost worked for Rock 104 in Hattiesburg, as I was accepted at USM in the Broadcast School but did not go becausse I moved to Meridian for the remainder of my career and began at 97 OKK. I finished at Z-95.1 FM, a station we started from the ground up. Just wanted to know--who are you and where are you? How do you know Paul? Haven't proofed---sorry for any typos! Met Scott McTeer as well. Know him?

  29. B.... ....

Hey dude... lol- sorry. Didn't get to finish the 1st try. I am Nikki Taylor from DMS Stereo 101 Greenville and many other places --left there long ago but was a huge fan of ZZQ just before it "died" and that was as a matter of fact 1 of the many reasons I became a DJ and we did go "dead" for a solid minute, as did all of the stations in Mississippi, in honor of ZZQ and it's success for all those years and our love of such a great station. We were formatted after that station then....

  30. J.... ....

    Define "near"

  31. J.... V....

So proud you did added this.

  32. G.... G....

He was actually what they call FREAKING OUT!!! I remember this sing well, Love it!

  33. N.... W....

I'm from Laurel, Ms. I went to high school at West Jones High School. It was located in Soso, MS. Love this song!

  34. 2.... ....

He is still on the Radio Business.

  35. 2.... ....

    Classic Tune!!!!

  36. J.... N....

50 year old WZZQ listener here, from Vicksburg. Thanks so much for ripping and posting this. When I found this video I liked to kick over, I was shakin' and hollerin'...hollerin' that trip out....I was actually what they call freakin' out.

  37. A.... ....

Soso is near Quitman....Mississippi has many different varities of southern accents....the guy in the background is definately genuine Mississippian.

  38. s.... ....

i used to listen to zzq when it made it over the trees in east central ms. loved to hear perez say " hi i'm perez ...and your not"

    s.... ....

Man, he had a great speaking voice.

  39. M.... H....

    Rock on Hattiesburg!!!

  40. A.... ....

I am in Mississippi....believe it or not, there are still people who talk this way. In fact, there are some who speak with an even stronger drawl. It seems to be more prevelant in people from small towns or rural areas. But no one, and I mean NO ONE is as naive as the gentleman in the background of this song. I believe he was perfectly sincere, though, because of the date this lp was released. I don't think it was an act.

  41. 1.... ....

    Mississippi Son!

  42. T.... ....

I love this song!! thank you for posting this!! i was looking forever to find this on the internet!! :D
"He was actually what they call 'freakin out'" HAHA incredible song!

  43. W.... ....

Thank you or posting this! I used to hear this all the time on ZZQ growing up. Back when a radio station was run by people and the DJs...not the marketing department.
    Good times!

  44. P.... ....

I love this. My hunting lease is in Soso Mississippi.

  48. c.... ....

If anyone is interested, this album (uh, I mean CD) is now available from Amazon.

  49. G.... B....

All of Paul Davis' works can now be purchased on CD. This is a magnificent track and it is hard for me to think of a better singer songwriter. i.e. An artist who writes and sings equally well. Agreed?

  50. W.... S....

I played some on 94/TXX midday...

  51. r.... ....

Paul and I share the same hometown. Thanks for sharing this.

  52. N.... G....

@patrick9648 yeah i hear it on rock 104 every once in a while. this is one of my mom's favorite songs from back in the day. they used to laugh when they heard the first and last part. man i wish i lived back then.

  53. d.... ....

Great song! I have told people about this song for years, folks have never heard it.

  54. W.... ....

RIP Paul Davis! The man was talented, no doubt. I grew up in a town about 5 minutes away from SoSo. This song was played all the time when I was growing up and we loved it! Thanks for posting this.... brings back a lot of good memories of home.

  55. l.... ....

I remember them playing it on Rock 104 (grew up in Laurel, MS) . I worked in a record store while going to college, and the DJ who played it came in one time, and told me that he played it from an LP he had. This was after the LP format had died too.

  56. 5.... ....

    Soso ohoh yeah

  57. C.... W....

I guess I got lucky. This song was released only two years after I was born, yet somehow I had a copy of it when I was maybe 8 years old. The B-Side was "Superstar". Or maybe this was the B-Side to "Superstar", which is more likely. Anyhow, the lucky part is--I grew up in Ohio. How a 45 single got from Jackson, Mississippi to my little hands south of Cleveland is beyond me, but I am grateful that it did. They just don't make music like this... One in a million. Many thanks for sharing it.

  58. R.... R....

THIS IS FOR MY COUSIN, GREG ROWLAND, IN BELZONI, MS!! LOVE YA CUZ!

  60. J.... W....

OH MY GOSH. I have not heard this song in years and years, probably since the 70s or 80s, when I first left Jackson. I used to love this song so much, and the funny thing is, when I heard the first beat, I IMMEDIATELY knew the words and started talking and then singing them. Thanks for a WONDERFUL blast from the past and my youth.

  61. C.... S....

hubby is from Indiana and just had to play this for him! love it! brings back memories

You can hear some giggling when the "Sheriff" is talking. Love this. I too looked for it in some form or other for years so I'm happy you posted.

  69. J.... C....

Wow. Every once in a while, a song reappears that I had once loved but over the last 30 years had faded from my memory. This one was great on ZZQ. But they would also play Mac McAnally. It reminds me of "In The City" by Stevie Wonder. "..I was born, in Hard Times Miss-i-sip-i..."

  70. L.... T....

I've been searching this song forever! Thanks for posting it. Brings back alot of ZZQ memories! I'm in Atlanta now & no station here has ever heard of this song. BTW, ZZQ has a cool Facebook page called ZZQ Truth. Lots of cool links & videos, plus they have ZZQ T-shirts available for ordering.

  71. L.... S....

HAHAHA!!! I am enchanted with this song!! I'm 52 years old and I never heard this one. I love the artist and I'm sorry I hadn't heard it before this! Thanks for sharing it!
