Davis, Mac - Whoever Finds This, I Love You Lyrics

On a quiet street in the city a little old man walks along
Shuffling through the Autumn afternoon
And the Autumn leaves reminded him another summer's come and gone
He had a long, lonely night ahead waitin' for June
Then among the leaves near an orphan's home a piece of paper caught his eye
And he stooped to pick it up with trembling hands
And as he read the childish writing, the old man began to cry
'Cause the words burned inside him like a flame

Whoever finds this, I love you!
Whoever finds this, I need you!
I ain't even got no one to talk to!
So, Whoever finds this, I love you!

The old man's eyes searched the orphan's home
And cam to rest upon a child with her nose pressed up against the window pane
And the old man knew he'd found a friend, at last
So he waved at her and smiled
And they both knew they'd spend the winter laughing at the rain

"And they did spend the summer laughing at the rain, talking through the fence, exchanging little gifts they'd made for each other. The old man would carve toys for the little girl, and she would draw pictures for him of beautiful ladies surrounded by green trees and sunshine, and they laughed alot. But then on the first day of June, the little girl ran to the fence to show the man a picture she had drawn, but he wasn't there! And somehow, the little girl knew he wasn't coming back. So she went back to her little room, took out a crayola and a piece of paper, and wrote:"

Whoever finds this, I love you!
Whoever finds this, I need you!
I don't even have no one to talk to
So, whoever finds this, I love you!

Thank you. I listen to this every year around autumn because it is a good reminder that life is so short and that I should tell those that I love that I love them.

Thank you Chih for the upload.

My dad was a DJ. I made him play this song every day

  9. S.... A....

If this song doesn’t make you cry...you have no soul

  10. D.... C....

... this was a 'run to the bathroom' song for dj's ... I was one ... I played 'cause I liked it, not just 'cause it was 4:30 ... songs with recitations were seldom played. Mac's sincerity sold it for me ... if you like it, check out his FOREVER LOVER. Just as good.

    I remember feeling this way

  25. B.... H....

I lived in a children's Home for several years in the early 60's and this was almost my own story since I wrote notes and dropped them around for people to find....saying the exact thing. Then when Mac Davis, a very favorite of mine, came out with this song, I secretly believe it was for me. Either way, it was a good part of my life doing it.☺

You will never believe how hard it was to find this song. I was in High School in the late 1970's and remember still today how it touched my heart. I couldn't even remember Mac Davis by name but I still recalled the touching story written so long ago. It took a little while but I am so glad I found it again. It makes me cry like a baby. Love you Mac and all the wonderful songs and memories you gave us. God Bless!

Hello .. Mac Davis is truly one of our greatest singer-songwriters. I saw him do
this in person with a full orchestra - man, when those strings come in and out of the song I was crying along with everyone else. Roger C.

    Remember lyrics

  50. l.... t....

chyi 's version is more soulful and touching.

    l.... t....

I respectfully disagree. She has a beautiful voice, but no...not more soulful and touching than the original.

    l.... t....

The man who wrote it himself did it better.

    l.... t....

P.S. Chyi's version doesn't catch the tempo needed, and lacks the SOUL of the original.

  51. 4.... ....

This song was written when I was 4 years old and I have always loved it.  It is full of emotion, depth and meaning.  Loneliness can be the worse possible feeling, especially if you are old, or very young.

    4.... ....

Even as a little kid I could "see" the song playing out. I think the visual it brings to mind helps with the emotions. I remember this playing in our house a lot when I was kid , especially after my dad passed.

I cant think of even one song that Mac wrote that wasnt a very good song. He wasnt called a songpainter for nothing. He still looks good even for an old man of 70...or is it 71?? His concerts were a real fun place to be in the 70's. Love You Mac xo Always will!!

  62. 4.... ....

This song really pulls at the heart strings. Some might call it sappy, I call it real music.

  63. J.... S....

This song, like others of this type, requires a good singer to give it credibility. Mac Davis does it so well. I know what loneliness feels like and this recording expresses it perfectlyl.

On this day in 1970 {June 20th} Mac Davis performed this song on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand...
About one month earlier on May 16th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #53 and spent 8 weeks in the Top 100...
It reached #43 on Billboard's Country chart and #54 in Canada...
    R.I.P. Mr. Clark...

  75. K.... W....

wow. such an incredable song. Stricks a cord deep within

  76. J.... O....

Hopefully, the old man died happy. Hopefully, the little girl found more friends.

I grew up in Fresno, California. One of the roughest toughest places in the U.S. My mother and father separated when I was about 10yrs old. I have a lot of machismo as a mexican american man, but my father was a great man and he had a heart of gold. I remember listening to this song with him when I was a little child and even then me and my dad would get sentimental. I never forgot this song or the lyrics. My dad passed in December 2007 and Im now 43yrs old. The world was a beautiful place then.

@tunesmith09 "Song Painter" has been released on cd (in 2010) on the TBird (a subsidiary of the UK label, Cherry Red). It is paired with his "I Believe In Music" album. It's great to finally have this classic music available, I've worn out my vinly copies.

Thanks for uploading this very touching song !

  85. J.... ....

I'm surprised that this song was never a huge hit. The words are so sweet and tender and although it is a difficult song to sing, Mack certainly did a masterful job with the unequalled resonance and tonal quality of his voice. One of my all-time favs!

  86. J.... D....

    One of the greatest ever.

  87. R.... ....

@MrWogo.... You are so right my friend.. you could never understand the 70's unless you were there.. I started college in fall of 1970.. I lived, loved, laughed, and cried through the 70's.. and the music was Iconic.. You said so much in a small paragraph... Thank you MrWogo.... RickzzSands

who wrote this beautiful little song?- great arrangement by Mac & co.

  89. r.... b....

@RICKzzSANDS I agree, the music, the culture...I miss it all

  90. R.... ....

@grayzah .. I saw Mac Davis in concert in 1973 in LaGrande, Oregon at Eastern Oregon Stae College and he just brought the house down... When he did this song there wasn't a dry eye in the house!!! I'll always treasure this concert... What a time to be young in this era.. late 60's and 70's.. Fast cars.. cute girls with waffled hair, and "waffle" stompers.. and bootleg 8-track tapes... I lived it and loved it.. and it will never be again.. the greatest music "EVER".. 92. g.... ....

A gem from 1970's "Songpainter" album (the very first Mac Davis album, I believe) which is one of the best singer songwriter albums ever! The talented arranger was Artie Butler and the album was produced by Jerry Fuller. It included my favorite song "Home" which sadly, is still relevant today. thank you for this!

  93. S.... C....

Oh my God. My sister put this on my wall on Facebook. I loved this song when I was a kid. I would cry and cry and cry. Could never remember the name of it, but I always remembered the song. Thank You to whoever put this up.
