Davis Jr., Sammy - Here's That Rainy Day Lyrics

Maybe I should have saved those leftover dreams
Funny, but here's that rainy day
Here's that rainy day they told me about
And I laughed at the thought that it might turn out this way

Oh, where's that worn out wish that I threw aside
After it brought my lover near?
Funny how love becomes a cold rainy day
Funny, that rainy day is here

Where's that worn out wish that I threw aside
After it brought my lover near?
Funny how love becomes a cold rainy day
Funny, that rainy day is here

Sammy & Laurindo -- two Masters, alone together - "Here's That Rainy Day"
Yesterday listening to Nancy Sinatra's Siriusly Sinatra 3-hour program -- her 'Mostly Richard Rodgers' show ( No. 450) I praised Sammy Davis Jr. He'd opted to perform "one of the strongest message songs EVER," as Nancy described it, YOU'VE GOT TO BE CAREFULLY TAUGHT. It was Sammy alone together with a guitarist, playing 'unplugged' - an unamplified archtop jazz guitar.

It reminded me, I said, of an album of Broadway songs (including some I'd not heard of) Sammy recorded with Laurindo Almeida -- a giant on the instrument from Brazil. (That's Laurindo Almeida playing throughout Sinatra's version of the Cahn/Van Heusen classic, "I Only Miss Her When I Think of Her.")

Today (just for me?) Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio played Sammy & Laurindo's "Here's That Rainy Day." The human voice alone with an unamplified nylon string guitar never sounded better than this!

Just a Beautiful song!!! This was also Johnny Carson's favorite song.

    c.... ....

One of 2 of Mr. Carson's favorites - along with "I'll Be Seeing You". I remember those last weeks of his ending his reign as King of Late Night where Tony Bennett sung "I'll Be Seeing You" in tribute to JC & Bette Midler sung "Here's That Rainy Day" in tribute on his next to last show. This particular recording by the World's Greatest Entertainer is my favorite version of this tune. And aside from Lady Day, my favorite version of "I'll Be Seeing You" remains the one by one of her finest students- the great Etta Jones.

Que pena Sinatra não ter gravado também voz e violão com Laurindo Almeida.

Now, decades later. I understand my parents love for great singers and songs from their generation. I don't think we "boomers" appreciated what we saw week after week on tv in those days of our youth. Sammy Davis Jr was a staple in the music community and I have always loved his voice. He had a style all his own didn't he? I had not heard his version of my favorite song before. Thanks for posting.

    M.... M....

Yes -- "a style all his own" and like you, M Mcgann I love Sammy & Laurindo's version of my favorite song from a Broadway show that didn't last long (Carnival in Flanders I think it was called, and after a few performances it was gone with the wind. But this gorgeous ballad by Johnny Burke (words) and Jimmy Van Heusen (music) is one of their two best songs. The other is But Beautiful. Thanks for sharing, M Mcgann -- just posted my own take on this one today 2/25/2019 -- Mark B of the frozen North

    wonderful Sammy Davis ♥

  13. M.... H....

Just absolutely gorgeous. There was only one Sammy Davis...I loved him, and here, simple with just the great Laurindo Almeida's acoustic guitar.

I second that emotion: Two masters, alone together at the peak of their powers: Sammy Davis and Laurindo Almeida. Thanks for your note, Marty Hyman.

Just moved, found a box old LPs.  Remember spending hours listening to this in the late 60s, 70s.  I would wish real music for future generations.

A kindred spirit! Yes a black vinyl LP we treasured from the early 70s. Only in recent years was it available as a CD. As you say, "Real music for future generations" of musically-literate people yet unborn. Thanks for posting, meri rodby

"A tribute to greatness and truth." Yes, you said. And to beauty and goodness.

  16. f.... ....

This is such a beautiful album. There is a great remastered CD version done by Steve Hoffman that is a must have of this tender masterpiece. Sammy shows more restraint and delicate sensitivity to the lyrics than perhaps at any time in his illustrious career. Almeida is his perfect foil throughout this gem. The Shadow of Your Smile is my favorite off of the album, it is exquisite.

Thanks for your note, fomomoto3 -- informed and informative, concise and a joy to read. I agree with your every word, especially about Sammy showing "more restraint and delicate sensitivity to the lyrics" of the songs on this special album from long ago "than perhaps at any time in his illustrious career." And the perfect accompaniment by Laurindo Almeida. (You can hear Laurindo playing this same nylon-string classical guitar throughout Sinatra's definitive recording of "I Only Miss Her When I Think of Her." Thanks for posting! (Left a note of my own this day -- 2/25/2019 -- Mark B of the frozen North

    Bravo!

I had this album growing up, and keenly remember listening to it every day for about 4 years (age 14-18). I remember listening to it over and over, stopping to write down all the words and trying in vain to replicate Laurindo's incredible style on the guitar (30 years later, still no luck). I kept the album in a dresser, and one day it got wedged in there and snapped in half when I opened the drawer. And I agree with Slow Rambler (everything), but especially THANKS to the Millsbrothers! love his voice, what a great actor too 😍

    R.... ....

@Linda Hinchliffe I second that emotion, Linda Hinchliffe. Sammy was a fine actor. Thanks "ReallyVerySomething" for you delightful anecdote. I winced at the thought that it might turn out this way ("kept the album in a dresser and one day it got wedged in there and snapped in half . . . )

A reminder of a kinder simpler time. Brilliant and lyrical. Two different worlds indeed.Thank god I was born at a time when talents like these made music devoid of all pretence or electronic 'enhancement' A word of thanks to 'millsbrothers' for uploading and making it available.
