Davies, Ray - Working Man's Café Lyrics
Looking for the working man's cafe
In the shopping centre of the town
Looking for somewhere to fit in
In among the retail outlets
Where the fruit and veg man used to stand
I always used to see him there
Selling old apples and pears
Chatting up the pretty girls
With knocked off goods in the van
Don't you know he was a working man
Long ago he was a working man
And we sat in the working man's cafe
Everything around me seems unreal
Everywhere I go it looks and feels like America
We've really come a long way down this road
Improving our surroundings as we go
Changing our roots and culture
But don't you know
Long ago there was a working man
Don't you know we were all working men
And we'd sit and pass the time of day
At the working man's cafe
I thought I knew you then but will I know you now?
There's gotta be a place for us to meet
I'll call you when I've found it
I only hope that life has made us a little more grounded
Hey man, I see you now
Oh oh, we were all working men
And here we are at the working man's cafe
It's really good to see us come so far
But haven't we forgotten who we are
Taking out a larger loan
Equity relief and mortgages
We all seem to pass the time of day
Online at the internet cafe
And if you forget my face
In case you've forgotten just who I am
I'm the kid with the greasy spoon
Firmly held in my hand
Don't you know I was a working man
Long ago we were all working men
And we sat and spent the time of day
At the working man's cafe
Yeah, at the working man's cafe

Davies, Ray Working Man's Café Comments
Ah the perennial search for any Brit for a decent cuppa cha, the cup that cheers. Nice one Ray.
I enjoy this song-story. And of course Rays fine voice.
I'm always ready for some backhanded shit every time Ray or Dave mention eachother.
Such a great story told by one of the worlds greatest storytellers!
i passed by hornsey town hall last week the first place i saw the kinks before they had the name God save the kinks
I was blown away by Ray Davies at the Greenwich Music Time concert on Friday. Listening to his music made me feel that my Mum and Dad were still with me. Bless you Ray.
This man makes me proud to also be a Muswell Hillbilly
writing songs at his age with more heart and meaning then most of these corporate young twits these days..
Yes you are so right and they are really good songs but the bloody radio stations won't play them. The dude playing guitar on Ray's left looks like Bill Murray!
Ray is right up there with the best of them and just like a good wine gets better with age. Just get it back on with Dave
Just like wine Gets better with age. Go for it Ray
top man ray
it don't get much better
Love you, Ray and Dave!
chuffin' marvellous.
I can't enjoy the nice songwriting. It's just painful to hear his voice sometimes.
@BeaRosenkilde
@DohertyTownshend English professor?
@Nicolene130 that's opinion
Ray is always great on the time that never was
1 november Amsterdam!
Good that one of the greatest songwriters is still creating gems like this one
Lennon is Lennon a genius in his own right. We all have and love our favorite/best music but Why compare it in a way to say one is "better" than the other. I appreciate both Ray davies and John Lennon, Vive la difference!!!
AGREED!!
Ohhh Ray, Du bist der größte für mich;-))
its just i very often drink with him and he has never once mentioned anything about you or this drink you speak of.
mmmmmmmmm
Quite a statement. I disagree for sure but....
I learned a long time ago that the Kinks will always be my favorite, with the Boss, who I am seeing tomorrow for the world tour opener in San Jose, right behind. Bruce wasnt always perfect, especially in the 90's with 2 mediocre records Human Touch and Lucky Town, but the Kinks literally have hundreds of timeless gems, and the fact that music critics and musicians worship them and not the general public makes them even more special. Go listen to Arthur, Village Green and Lola albums to start
As a #1 Kinks fan and #2 Bruce fan (hence my youtube name) I would like to apologize for BigRiverOne and his ignorance...you are embarrassing me son. The Kinks put out a treasure trove of music and Bruce is legendary for his live show...and vice versa. enough said, they are both head and shoulders above anyone else in my book (as long as Bruce is with the E Street Band of course)
search youtube for "ray davies over my head" it is off Ray's 2006 solo album. The name escapes me right now, but I saw the Austin City Limits Davies performance of the songs off the 2006 album. Simple great!!!
Really good to see us come so far, but havent we forgot who we are......? Great song, poignant lyrics. Genius at work.
Lovely. I must get this record.
is that Carl Palmer on drums?
Ray actually lives in London now, north London, right round where he grew up. So you are way off the mark there. And I think it's save to say that he doesn't hate the UK, he's probably one of its greatest champions. And this particular song is great evidence of that, that's what it is about.
someone asked who the blonde is.
thats karen, his girlfriend.
oh I love Ray's guitar
Hi
Any of you know if there is a DVD released for this show? I tried to find something , but there is no info at Internet about it
Love you Ray! So glad you still are keeping the fires of rock 'n' roll burning...
Here here.... a reunion, I hope so, but Dave has vowed never to reunite. Is there still hope??? What do you think?
I was there too at the Tower. He's one hell of an artist. There's not many of the originals that still can sing their original songs in the original keys. I was wowed watching him sing "Tired of Waiting" I thought, geez he's 63 and still going strong. He IS the storyteller. Thanks Ray!! Love ya to death!
i was there under Ray's right handside 1st raw. Great song write and great gig.!.
someone have the theme "Musique d'amour"
Composed by Ray Davies??????????????
Ray Davies'music speaks to the common man, and often refers to memories that shape his yearning for a simpler, purer time. He writes of anxieties, disillusionment and failed relationships but always finds hope for the future. His views are witty, sentimental, critical and hopeful all at the same time. "Gotta stand and face it, life is so complicated."
His quirky songs and wry observations are cleverly wrapped up in some of the most melodic tunes you'll ever hear from a rock artist.
one of the best writers of songs in the pop history.
You were magnificent tonight Ray - please play Auckland again. We loved you.
WHo's the blonde on the back-up vocals?
"by being a broad"?
Wonderfull!!!!!!!!!
Best artist ever!
Hope to see him again with Dave and Mick.
I would like to disagree with you, but all 3 of those records were mediocre, but the good stuff was still pretty incredible. A few good songs per record? Perhaps. But, I can't honestly say I've listened to much since then from any artist that doesn't suffer from the same "a few good song" review.
We obviously both love The Kinks so it's moot to sit here and argue about now and then, but I have to tell you we are on total opposite sides on thinking.
I feel Preservation and Word of Mouth are the two album that I can say only have a few killer songs on them.
Put it this way..a so-called decline in the quality of Kinks material would still land them in the excellent catagory.
Few if any can claim that.
You need to have your head examined!
How can you claim the Kinks are your favorite band and Ray is your favorite songwriter ever and call those three albums pieces of shit?!
Are you really 20 years old as your profile states?
Usually it's the old farts and their "Village Green" mentality who would take that stance on later day Kinks material.
I do agree with you that Ray is the greatest singwriter ever, no one can touch him...now, then or ever.
THANK YOU !
'Work' used to be a good thing. I hope something good comes your way :)
a return to form?
The man has always maintained..perhaps your ears have just been elsewhere.
Ray Davies...is there anyone to even at least challenge him?
Don't get much better than this!
Thank-Q!
Gregg
Great Song from a great Album.
Great song so so true, how boring is Britain today, same retail parks, same shops in every high st in the country, empty shops often become tacky takeaways, finger on the button Ray as always,at least your unique.
Excellent comeback!
i can relate to this song .worked in constuction for years and now am disabled and am told by the powers that be I didn,t work the right "quarters"to draw disability!seems the working man always gets pissed on in the end! This song makes me feel better!
Great song! Great new cd! Is this from a DVD release?? Thanks for posting!
This man is a god, I swear... Fantastic as always, cheers for posting!
