Davies, Ray - London Song Lyrics
There's a room in a house in a street in a manor in a borough
That's part of a city that is generally referred to as London
It's a dark place, a mysterious place
And it is said that if you're born within the sound of Bow-Bells
You have the necessary qualifications to be christened a Londoner
But when you think back to all the great Londoners
William Blake, Charles Dickens, Dick Whittington
Pearly kings, barrow boys, Arthur Daley, Max Wall
And don't forget the Kray twins
But if you're ever up on Highgate Hill on a clear day
You can see right down to Leicester Square (London, London)
Crystal Palace, Clapham Common, right down to Streatham Hill
North and South, I feel that I'm a Londoner still (London, London)
Churchbells ring out through the land
You were born in London, England
(London, London, through the dark alley-ways and passages of London)
And there's a tap by a reservoir, leading to a stream
That turns into a river estuary that eventually opens to the sea (London, London)
And there's a docker by a wharf, sending cargo overseas
Unloading foreign trade from a large ocean vessel
In the mighty metropolitan port of London
(London, London, through the dark alley-ways and passages of London)
When I think of all the Londoners still unsung
East-enders, West-enders, Oriental-enders
Fu Manchu, Sherlock Holmes, Jack Spock, Henry Cooper
Thomas A'Becket, Thomas Moore, and don't forget the Kray twins
There's a part of me that says "Get out"
Then one day I'll hear somebody shout
"Sounds to me like you come from London Town"
But if you're ever up on Highgate Hill on a clear day
I'll be there (I'll be there)
Yes I will be there (there)
Through the dark alley-ways and passages of London, London
London, London, through the dark alley-ways and passages of London, London
London, London, through the dark alley-ways and passages of London, London

Davies, Ray London Song Comments
I love London and Ray Davies!
Pure poetry!
When RD sings..." But if ur ever up on Highgate("Higgit" in Cockney speak)Hill...I'll be there,...Yes-I'll be there!!" he is refering 2 the famous Highgate Cemetery. HGC also features prom. in the classic children's song abt the BLACK PLAGUE "London Bridges" (Stanza-"Falling Down")("HG,HG!!!"). HGC was often used as backdrop in Hammer Films. RD's (..Hood) of Muswell Hill would probably be serviced by HGC. I believe his parents are interned there,...hence giving the song it's superb eternal quality...that RD excels at!!
+Noggs Monney No, he's referring to Highgate Hill, which is an actual place where on a good day there is a wonderul view. Look it up!
I bloody well know abt. "If ur ever up on Highgate-Hill-on a clear-day"-" U can see right down 2 Leister Sq." I do have ears!!!....As a long standing Kink's Fan I can tell u without a doubt that RD is a MASTER in the Double-Multi use of "Words" and It's a well known fact that his use of the notorious English Weather is a harbringer of forboding things 2 come. And "Clear-Day" is a dodge for a blessed interval for "Peace" a gap between WARS!! RD is a man U should pay closer attention than just "Face Value" ie phonyness..ie surface living!!! This is also divulged in X-Ray!!! Perhaps u should read my initial comment again!!
"Higgit"?
I was born in London and have lived in Highgate for most of my life and I have NEVER heard anyone say "Higgit". I do see Ray Davies in The Prince of Wales pub from time to time.
Noggs Monney I agree with you wholeheartedly!
Great song and this is such a great video too.
Bravo & Brava!
Wonderful lyrically. That is what draws me to it.
