David Usher - Fast Car Lyrics

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we can make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me myself I got nothing to prove

You got a fast car
I got a plan to get us out of here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
We won't have to drive too far
Just across the border and into the city
You and I could both get jobs
Finally see what it means to be living

See my old man's got a problem
Lives with a bottle that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
Body's too young for looking like his
Mama went off and left him
Wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
I quit school that's what I did
What I did, what I did

You got a fast car
Is it fast enough that we can fly away
We gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

So remember when we're driving, driving in your car
The speed so fast felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
We go cruising, entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in a market in the checkout line
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a big house and live in the suburbs

So remember when we're driving, driving in your car
The speed so fast felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
I got a job pays all our bills
Stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought we'd together you and me would find it
I got no plans I ain't going nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving

You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so you can fly away
You gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

So remember when we're driving, driving in your car
The speed so fast felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

I've been a fan of Tracy since 'Fast Car' first hit the airwaves and Muchmusic. I've also liked David's since 'Black Black 🖤'. I've never heard his version of this until now and I really like his take on Tracy's classic. The upbeat on it is cool!

Love David's songs since i was in 10th grade.

  3. B.... M....

Least favourite song on the record. Mainly because of the backing singer.

    B.... M....

exactly that's what I was thinking it's Tracy Chapman she has a horrendous voice and over sings everything like most black singers like at the end of everything she sings she does that going up and down scales thing. She also sings over top of the main vocals which shows that she has no ear for music and singing over main vocals isn't a good thing when your asked to do back vocals.

This song just fills me with happiness. :3

Chapman sucks her voice sounds like a young black man doing a higher voice trying to sound like a women more than she sounds like a women singing. She sings over top of the main vocals almost as if shes trying to make the song hers by singing over top of Davids main vocals. Chapman has one song that people know her by and that's gimme one reason and basically she uses basic blues cords and sings in a blues delivery that has been so over used by so many blues musicians over the years. Gimme one reason to stay here..... no it's OK Tracy you can leave.....who would ever protest that beast leaving anyways.Whoever would date or sleep with that has serious self esteem problems.

  11. p.... ....

love it! it has it's own beauty. covers dont compete with the originals, they just put their own interpretation to the song.

I think this is a beautiful cover. Isn't it possible for people to like the original and the cover?

  15. M.... ....

@mstelmach17 he probably just liked the song, so he sung it to pay tribute to it.

I believe a gongregation is in order to celebrate the sheer magic and brilliance that is David Usher's 'Fast Car' cover. He managed to turn a great song by Tracy Chapman into a masterpiece of its time. When his version plays, I don't think it's far fetched to assume that for 4 minutes and 43 seconds, there is world peace... and also children's illnesses are miraculously cured. Long live David Usher.
