David Gilmour - Short And Sweet Lyrics

You ask what is the quality of life?
Seeking to justify the part you play
And hide, fearing it incomplete
To try to make it any more or less than short and sweet

But short, short is from you to me
As close as we are wont to try to make it be
We're caught watching the dark in the sky
Who knows, helpless as time itself to hold the time of day

And you, you are a fantasy
A view from where you'd like to think the world should see
Be true and you will likely find
A few building a vision new and justice to our time

And we, we, the immoral men
We dare, naked and fearless in the elements
And free, carefree of tempting fate
Aware and holding off the moral nightmare at the gates

And sweet, sweet as a mountain stream
We'll look toward a new day breaking in the east
We'll meet as every future dream unfolds
And surely quality that is the very least

  40. S.... ....

the "duh duh duh duh "sounds like astronomy domine

  41. 2.... ....

another one of ma fav gilmour tracks co wrote with another musical lyrical geinus roy harper

  42. c.... ....

    Well done David!

  43. M.... ....

An absolute devout Floyd fan but curiously I prefer the faster doubled beat on Roy Harper's version. It would be great if they'd recorded a version with Harper's backing and Gilmour guitar and singing in harmony (like on GIlmour's 1984 Hammersmith show). Oh... and mix out the strings though.

  44. M.... M....

    He bit the dust!!!

  45. J.... M....

    Magique guitare..Merci David Gilmour

  46. S.... B....

    bellissimo David

  47. J.... M....

I Don't Understand How Anyone Could Dislike This Song But I Am Proud To Be Like 666.

    J.... M....

Maybe they like Gilmour, but feel mislead because the title of the song is Short and Sweet, but the song clocks in at 5:31 which is not necessarily 'short'. I don't know, probably stretching to find a reason why 8 idiots gave this a thumbs down.

  48. l.... m....

this song takes me to space

  49. R.... N....

Excellent Gilmour!! Truly a music genius! Thank you!

  50. k.... ....

    Love David gilmour music ❤️

  51. C.... B....

I am of the belief that Pink Floyd was better w/o Roger Waters, with of Dark Side. CCCCCCCCC

    C.... B....

Roger Waters isn't a great singer, and isn't a great bass player. He's not even a decent human being. He wrote the lyrics to a few good songs and got famous riding the coat tails of Syd Barrett David Gilmour, and also Rick Wright and Nick Mason,. Roger Waters is a far-left lunatic that's so left-wing he is communist and anti-Semitic, pro BDS ect. I understand David Gilmour is openly Labour party, but he's obviously not an insufferable, obnoxious asshole like Roger Waters is.

    C.... B....

CoolhandLukeSkywalkr I couldn't of put it any gooder. Leftie idiotic assholes ruin everything. I'm a Roger Waters music fan, but yeah, he is a complete asshole, egotistical(probably the biggest in rock)uncooperative dick. It does annoy me when assholes dismiss Gilmour, Wright and Mason. And say Roger was Pink Floyd. Roger is a pikey.

    C.... B....

Charlie Blackwell I think that without Waters Pink Floyd lost its voice and energy. It had the heart (Gilmour), and the soul (Wright), but the voice and the power was gone.

  52. M.... A....

maybe the beggining and other parts sounds like "Run like hell" ... but in my opinion, this song is more beautiful than "Run.." Not better, but beautiful.

  53. M.... S....

velho e bom lobo do mar, grande postagem.

  54. F.... L....

    TURN IT UP, PLEEEEZEE.

    F.... L....

I just did, this is awesome

  55. F.... L....

    i remember this. on LSD.

  56. A.... L....

My teacher says hes never heard of dis guy...omfg so sad ;( ;( ;( #1like=1prayer #plzhelpimscarednohuglolreference

    A.... L....

    +Bryan Stevens say what?

    A.... L....

Teachers these days can be as young as 23-24.

If they were never exposed ... not hard to believe at all.

    But so sad.

  57. M.... Z....

I literally can't imagine how someone could dislike this song

    M.... Z....

Michał Zapart I Agree How Could Someone Not Like This Great Song. At Least I Was Like 666

  58. S.... S....

all you people are BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!thank you David

  59. B.... M....

Can anyone else hear "Run like hell" riff slowed down through this intro a makes me wanna say "Take a breathe take a deep breathe" it is a great track need to dig out the vinyl :)

    B.... M....

I'm sure it influenced run like hell. Given the time it was recorded, Roger may have heard the album and said, Dave, I kinda like this. I've got an idea.

    B.... M....

Drop D tuning and a D pedal point. Same as run like hell.

    B.... M....

I remember hearing 'The Wall' for the first time and thinking exactly the same thing Denise.

    B.... M....

@David Rosenberg first of all music on Run like hell is Gilmours. IT was his demo that old fart almost-god Waters approved. Without Gilmour and his guitar Run like hell would be another Waters wailing his nearly Perfect lyrics with boring music as background .( dark Sarcasm). I heard The wall demos from The wall super deluxe box set so i know. Waters doesnt have guitar abilities to tell Gilmour what to Play.

    B.... M....

@Xfiles Foxisdead without Dave's guitar on any songs, it would not be the same or as good.

  60. R.... R....

at 3:00 it seems like "Hamburger Concerto" by Focus, in the same key, also...

  61. L.... W....

Who are the 2 buggers that dislike THIS song? LOL

    L.... W....

Its not 2, its now 8 really odd people

    L.... W....

    Lyle Wood
hey, but over the year, that figure's just risen to 11, compared to hundreds of likes.
    I'll take those odds.

    L.... W....

    Be nice

    L.... W....

    Lyle Wood they are idiots

  62. H.... ....

Cant wait to see him in March!!!

  63. D.... H....

My brother Paul; we were so close; we were abandoned by  our parents; 1.5 years older than he was; he bit the dust. This was our album; we loved it back in the 70s, early 80s.  I miss him.  God, do I miss him. He went bad, but deep-down inside he is a good person.  I will pray for eternity for him.  I never saw him again.

    D.... H....

I'm sorry to hear about your brother but it's truly moving what the power of music can do for the soul

    D.... H....

wHAT happened Denise..I lost my brother too...so sorry to hear\

    D.... H....

Denise Horn I feel very sorry for you Denise. I never went through that, I have a younger sister as nd we are very close so I can imaging how you feel. We have a totally different taste in music, but I can appreciate that. Just keep remembering him.

    D.... H....

Denise Horn sorry for your loss

    D.... H....

Hope some this music brings you pleasant memories. God bless.

  64. o.... ....

    Great album... PERIOD.......

  65. R.... R....

What a superb tune, hail to Maestro Gilmour.

    R.... R....

    @Raphos RMN and mr harper

  66. Y.... F....

Sounds like an evolution along the lines of some of their acoustic numbers like "Fearless" (from the Meddle LP). The melodies and harmonics really stand out.

    Y.... F....

@Yitzhak Finnegan floyd were an evolution

  67. A.... ....

    Love this song!!!!!

  68. F.... K....

    where`s the dirt bikers

  69. J.... s....

    epico, solitario  monumental

  70. h.... ....

    !:56 - "The scroats"

  71. K.... B....

this song is deeper than you think and a masterpiece of gilmour

    K.... B....

"You ask, what is the quality of life..."

    K.... B....

Absodamnlutely. It was one of the first albums I bought on my own as opposed to stealing from my older brothers' collections. I was a freshman in high school and even back then I knew it was extraordinary the first time I listened to it on the family console in our living room (with headphones). It was an instant favorite and still is one of my go to songs when life is kickin' me around.

    K.... B....

    David Gilmour and Roy Harper

    K.... B....

    And Roy Harper

  72. K.... J....

I love how the beginning sounds like run like hell

  73. T.... H....

BB King is the worst guitarist ever , how does he get more hits than this song. AMERICA!!!!

    T.... H....

david gilmour is british, and bb king is an all time great. This was an all around ignorant comment.

    T.... H....

+Tracy Howard Obvious troll is obvious

    T.... H....

+anthony b bb king and Gilmour two greats. BB King admired Dave's guitar playing. nuff said. Bb palued with Gilmour not the other way around lol.

    T.... H....

Gilmour would scoff in disgust if he heard you say that...

    T.... H....

B.B. King sucks! I am an American and Gilmour is the greatest behind the guitar than anyone in the world

  74. P.... ....

I always had the impression that in addition to this song inspiring Run Like Hell, Van Halen might have been inspired by Run Like Hell to write Jump. Hard to say, just about everything's been done in music by now, so you can't write two notes without alluding to another song/artist, whether purposeful or not.

  75. D.... G....

    Classic Gilmour!! Love this song!!

  76. R.... ....

    304-0 - enough said

  77. S.... A....

This is in Gilmour's words "the precursor to "Run Like Hell"...great tune...I love this album...

  78. A.... W....

I believe roy harper wrote this. bravo to both men!

    A.... W....

"Short and Sweet" was written in collaboration with Roy Harper, who recorded his own version for his 1980 albumThe Unknown Soldier.[7]

    A.... W....

    Hat's off to Roy Harper...

    A.... W....

    @Scott McNair have a cigar

  79. S.... M....

Love this album, love Gilmour, love Floyd.

  80. s.... ....

...No they will not be remembered .. I bought this Lp the moment it was released 1978 and every song is a special place. NO modern music /artist will ever live in infinity as David Gilmour will.

  81. l.... ....

I said that to myself the first time I heard this gem.

  82. k.... ....

This song appeared on roy harpers unknown soldier way before this version came out . I prefer the one off of Harper . Harper has also had guys like Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen as guest guitarists along with the amazing David Gilmour. Hats off to Harper by led zeppelin was the song that directed me to Roy Harpers music.

    k.... ....

    kokanee2010a,
no,gilmour and harper co-wrote this song, gilmour released it on his first solo album in 1978,two years before
roy harper released the unknown soldier, incidentally, according to wikipedia gilmour also played guitar on
harper's rendition on this song, well,he didn't,it was solely played by andy roberts.

  83. K.... H....

l remember the day l got this album (on vinyl)....still love it just as much now,

  84. M.... ....

Well, Gilmour did co-write Run Like Hell... and this is Gilmours solo album...

  85. T.... ....

    Nice song, Run like hell.

  86. A.... M....

I love it...it's my age style....

  87. s.... ....

  91. C.... N....

    love it!!!!

  92. B.... T....

At the beginning this song has shades of Run Like Hell from The Wall.

  93. M.... P....

This is deep. I've had this on CD for just over 9 years now. When I hear it now, it transports me back to exactly when I first heard it. This is one of those albums that got me through some very rough and lonely times, even though the tone of this album is often sad. It's hard to explain, but when you feel like you're drowning sometimes it seems someone throws you a lifeline cos they understand. That's what this album did for me. Thank you, David

  94. S.... F....

I should be shot for NOT owning this cd Amazon here I come

  95. A.... B....

    Life is okay now

  96. k.... ....

  98. P.... O....

@rg2027x This is why Richard (Milhaus) Nixon declared a "War on Drugs" Hmm,and then went after John Lennon Hmm........because of his stance on the Military/Industrial complex....How come he was assasinated...Hmm.

  99. T.... ....

    Enough echo to swallow U2!

  100. A.... T....

This writer knows it is because this quality of music is kept off the mainstream in favour of Lady Beiber, because it can make people think, and the last thing they want is for people to think.
