David Crosby - Paint You A Picture Lyrics

Winter's on its way
And the nights are long
The sun called it a day
Hours ago
I thought we'd be together
But I thought wrong
Just too much heavy weather
For you, I know, for much too long

So let me paint you a picture
While the winter sun is sinking
Two rocks in the glass
Two guesses what I'm drinking
The first guess doesn't count
The bottle's almost through
Let me paint a picture
A picture for you

Chimneys are blowing
Billows of smoke
The skyline is glowing
Facing south
I'm yours for the taking
I'm two kinds of broke
And I'm still aching
For the taste of your mouth

Let me paint you a picture
Of the river in November
Right before it freezes
Before it's too much to remember
The things we used to talk about
Believing they'd come true
Let me paint a picture
A picture for you

Let me paint you a picture
From my window today
There's a hawk that keeps hovering
Over its prey
There's a gun-metal sky
With patches of blue
Let me paint a picture
Paint a picture for you

The canvas will dry
And the tears will too
Let me paint a picture
Paint a picture for you

i'm sure it's all wishful thinking (tied as we are to our faves) but i first heard this song as crosby's letter to Joni Mitchell--i know he didn't write the lyric--i loved the byrds and crosby especially-with CSN&sometimesY i always thought of crosby as the most interesting-and one of the best singers and harmonizers in the pop world-glad he's still out there

One of the best songwriters of all time ...expressing the nuances of life at this fragile and magical time of his life. BEAUTIFUL! His best work in years !

I might catch shit for this. But our appeal to music is subjective. I have EVERYTHING David has recorded, even back to PreFlyte by The Byrds. He has had a major impact on my life as a musician and his songs helped my through some dark days. That being said, I'm not over excited by the Lighthouse album as a whole. I recognize the wonderful arrangements and melodies. But not sure I am a big fan of the Snarky atmosphere, as opposed to James Raymond or CPR or David with Graham. BUT!....I CANNOT stop listening to this song. The sparse guitar and piano arrangement are haunting and beautiful, his delivery is bone chilling and DOES paint a picture, and I am currently obsessed with this track. Anxiously awaiting the next release, which is coming soon! Love this overload of muse that Croz is having right now.

The lyrics were written by singer Marc Cohn. Beautiful and sad.

Let me draw your attention to the complicated rhyme scheme: a-b-a-c-d-b-d-c (stanzas 1 and 3). That’s artful poetry. Others get Nobel prizes for worse rhymes than that.

    'Taste your mouth'
    Not his best lyrics.....

    N.... Y....

"...I am still craving the taste of your mouth...." beautiful and sensual. read between the lines. it's a great album.
"...the canvas will dry, the tears will too, let me paint a picture for you."

This song is pretty in a 'Rusty & Blue' kind of way. The lyrics for this song are brilliant.

I have always liked the simple intricacies of Croz' s guitar. This song is a perfect example.
