This is not, you may be speechless to learn, an ode to Winifred Atwell, though I almost wish it were for she was a real winner. In the Fifties in England it was virtually impossible for a ten-year-old to hear boogiewoogies and rags unless our Winifred was playing them on her 'other' piano.

At home in Trinidad she'd been brought up with blues and R&B and had played it for the American GIs who were based at what is now the main airport. Winnie was the first black artist in Britain to sell one million records. She was tops.

No, this song is about, er, winning. David Sanborn is on sax. He was experimenting with sound effects at the time and I'd rather hoped he would push further into that area, but he chose to become rich and famous instead. So he did win really, didn't he?

I’m 11 years old today and I absolutely love David Bowie. I have to give huge thanks to my grandpa, who introduced me to David Bowie when I was 7. I have been discovering David Bowie songs all this time all because of him. My grandpa is amazing and the best grandpa ever. I don’t know what I would’ve done without him and Bowie. My grandpa and David bowie are pretty much my influences in life. They both teach me to be yourself and don’t try to be someone else you aren’t. I’m race your talents and always be proud of yourself. I go to David Bowie concerts to this day,(I’m writing this in 2019), which, yes, he did pass away, but there are David Bowie alumni tours and those feature his friends and band members. I unfortunately never got to see him in real life, but I am so grateful to know and love him today. Thank you grandpa and David Bowie❤️

I had me Maw listen to this song when I was a kid, trying to convince her that the man had talent and his music wasn't of that fandangled type. He eventually sang Little Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby (a man from her generation) and I told her; "See? Bing wouldn't sing with Bowie if he wasn't fantastic!"
But my best Bowie anecdote comes from the day I proudly told my husband (who was 10 years my senior and a total Beatles fan who always dismissed Bowie) that survey of musical peers voted Bowie as the MOST influential artist second to the Beatles. That made my day. :-)

"Win" is hands down the most underrated song David Bowie ever wrote, and despite only being played live once in his entire career (probably due to the difficulty of the lead vocal and the importance of the string arrangement to the track), it was one of David's personal favorites, as evidenced in it being chosen by him for his "iSelect" album - a compilation of songs that Bowie chose as his personal favorites. Moreover, it is probably one of the most personal songs he ever wrote. "Win" might be the greatest song ever written about artistic integrity, and it is a flat out declaration of Bowie's artistic manifesto: that the only purpose of success is to be able TO DO THINGS you believe in without having to answer to others or compromise. There all sorts of lyrical gems in this track. The opening line, "Me, I hope that I'm crazy," is Bowie immediately saying that he wants to be different from those around him in his art. "I feel you're driving but you're only the wheel." Yes, you are producing art, but you are not the actual artist driving it. It's the A&R man, the record label, the publisher, the agent. "Life lies dumb on its heroes." Often the greatest artists who have ever lived are not recognized until after their passing. And one of the greatest lines ever in a song: "Someone like you, should not be allowed, to start any fires." A nice little covert way of saying that you, a so-called artist, have no right to start artistic trends due to your inauthenticity. "Seems you're trying not to lose.....All you got to do is win." It doesn't matter what you do, just as long as you win. Even if it pollutes the culture, and creates an environment in which people like Bowie are "not supposed to win." But in the end, Bowie and those of his ilk get the last laugh because what they do is true to what they believe.

One of the best Bowie albums for me, much better than Station To Station.

Bowie was going for soul music the Black beat of America and he got it. Up the recording studio, the back up singer and being in Philadelphia for this incredible experience.
