David Bowie - Up The Hill Backwards Lyrics

The vacuum created
by the arrival of freedom
And the possibilities it seems to offer
It's got nothing to do with you,
if one can grasp it
It's got nothing to do with you,
if one can grasp it

A series of shocks - sneakers fall apart
Earth keeps on rolling
witnesses falling
It's got nothing to do with you,
if one can grasp it
It's got nothing to do with you,
if one can grasp it

Yeah, yeah, yeah
up the hill backwards
It'll be alright ooo-ooo

While we sleep they go to work
We're legally crippled
it's the death of love
It's got nothing to do with you,
if one can grasp it
It's got nothing to do with you,
if one can grasp it

More idols than realities
I'm OK, you're so-so

Yeah, yeah, yeah - up the hill backwards
It'll be alright ooo-ooo

  7. P.... ....

It feels like The Small Faces Son of a Baker crossed with something like I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing.

Issa bop, sis. 😂 Kill me.

  19. E.... ....

the classic song of the autumn Sunday morning, perhaps before sitting down at the table to have lunch with the family returning from the ordinary prayer in the church ;-))))))))

  20. O.... D....

Thank god its no game ended

  21. t.... p....

That Bass is kickin', sound like Stanley Clarke!

  22. S.... E....

Really, what's this all about? Someone?

    S.... E....

Its basically a folk/pop song that turns into post punk, high art rock epic. The lyrics seems to be addressing fate and being in God's hands, 'its got nothing to do with you' but keep struggling; its asking you to let go. The jewel is Robert Fripp's outro, so atonal and rough, which just gets more abrasive as the song ends. Its unparalleled and typically Bowie, its a masterpiece.

  23. G.... G....

    Highly underrated Bowie song!

  24. J.... G....

    Superb song!

  25. R.... A....

    Communism= up the hill backwards.

    R.... A....

I'm pretty sure this is about capitalist elites callously making life progression for average proletariat people extremely difficult, like walking up a hill backwards. Communist citizens dont even usually get a hill to walk backwards up.

  26. c.... ....

The vocals sound reminiscent of a TV commercial of the 2000s, but better because it's David Bowie c. 1980.

  27. j.... m....

The drudgery & pressures of everyday life. Working for the man?

    N.... K....

I always thought this was mockery of how rich elitist live and think. And making money and getting outta poverty is like going up a hill backwards. Idk could be totally wrong.

    N.... K....

His divorce and the publicity of it.

  31. V.... ....

    yeah.
    It'll be alright.

Very Cool, thanks for the share, big time from all❣️

  33. M.... J....

    The drummer is magnificent

    M.... J....

Dennis Davis (rip) best Bowie ever had.

    M.... J....

Dennis Davis was good; under-appreciated. I actually saw him twice. He wore a cap with an enormous bill.

  34. B.... O....

I can see my future lives................it's incredible...............but not impossible.

  35. B.... O....

Scary monsters, 2 parts awesome defiant distorted guitars, 1 part early bowie folk, mix with new wave keyboard tricks, sprinkle japanese haiku, serves entire goon squad, and remains fresh almost 40yrs after

    B.... O....

    robert fripp

    B.... O....

    its all about Mr. Fripp

  36. U.... ....

Just a little "Panic In Detroit" vibe. Great stuff.

    U.... ....

UpandOut. It's the percussion-Panic had those congas, this track has that old Bo Didley riff providing the guide rhythm.

  37. E.... H....

Another shiny amalgam of lots of time to think. But the rhythm changes could only come from the man

  38. G.... Q....

    My Favourite Bowie Track

  39. M.... A....

I remember the first time I heard this; love at first sound. Folksy, but it rocks.

  40. B.... B....

as smeone said bowie was magnificent

  41. D.... C....

This song kinda reminds me of Joan Osborne's What If God Was One of Us.

  42. V.... ....

This song reminds me of Blur hahaha I don't know why

    V.... ....

yeah Damon Albarn has a similar voice to Bowie

    V.... ....

Conquistador Domingo Fernando bwahaha no fucking way, m8!

    V.... ....

I can see where you’re coming from

  43. G.... C....

    Happy Birthday David. #shining star

  44. D.... W....

hearing this now just makes me cry, fuck sake he is sooooo missed

    D.... W....

Dave Wavy I understand your despair, but think of it this way: he led an amazing and productive life, he touched millions of souls, influenced and inspired hundreds of bands and musicians, probably prevented a good number of suicides, and overall changed our culture for the better. He lived a life fuller than most people can ever hope to live. He even released an album! Do not cry, for he has achieved a kind of immortality few of us can even conceive of!

    D.... W....

I totally agree and god damn want to give you a massive hug right now, still miss him though, :)

    D.... W....

He gave his mind the wheel. Most steer with their...

    D.... W....

    His music will live forever.

    D.... W....

He wasn't from this planet man. He had to go home eventually, offworld wherever he's really from. Couldn't expect him to grace this shitball planet with his presence forever.

  45. A.... G....

    Nothing compares to him !

  46. D.... ....

The one Bowie song I could never grasp why it was never considered a classic or a staple in his 80s era

    D.... ....

    Me too Daryl

    D.... ....

I don't think it was ever played live, Ashes, Fashion and to a lesser extent the title track all overshadowed it. I'm with you however.
Myself, I could never understand why Because You're Young never made it??
Have another listen if you're about:

    D.... ....

    @Slakfocmsnvfgls Why?

    D.... ....

@ThePaulv12 I find the sound a bit challenging compared to Bowie's other albums, and less catchier, less single-driven. Also, Fripp's guitarwork can sound a bit off-putting at first. You learn to love it though. And it's certainly not as difficult as say, Outside, or The Buddah of Suburbia...

    D.... ....

@Slakfocmsnvfgls i find side 2 as you describe but am rediscovering it.
I always loved side 1 and am slowly coming around to the B side - except Fripp only plays teenage wildife on that side. Must be that side one is so damn good.

  47. S.... T....

One of my favourite Bowie songs.

  48. r.... l....

    Bowie IS

  49. M.... ....

my favorite song on the album.

    2
    1-2-2

Shiruetto ya kage ga kakumei o miteiru
Mo tengoku no giyu no kaidan wa nai2

    Silhouettes and shadows
    watch the revolution
No more free steps to heaven
    It's no game

    Ore genjitsu kara shime dasare
Nani ga okkote irunoka wakara nai
    Doko ni kyokun wa arunoka
    Hitobito wa yubi o orareteiru
Konna dokusaisha ni iyashime rareru nowa kanashii

I am bored from the event
I really don't understand the situation
    And it's no game

    Documentaries on refugees
    Couples 'gainst the target
You throw a rock against the road
    And it breaks into pieces
    Draw the blinds on yesterday,
and it's all so much scarier
Put a bullet in my brain,
and it makes all the papers 2

    Nammin no kiroku eiga
Hyoteki o se ni shita koibito tachi
Michi ni ishi o nage reba
    Kona gona ni kudake
    Kino ni huta o sureba
    Kyohu wa masu
Ore no atama ni tama o buchi kome ba
    Shinbun wa kaki tateru

    So where's the moral
when people have their fingers broken2
To be insulted by these fascists
    it's so degrading
    And it's no game

    Shut up! Shutu

    p.... v....

Not the right lyrics! These are "It's no game part 1" lyrics.

    p.... v....
