David Bowie - The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell Lyrics

What to do?
What to say?
What to wear on a sunny day?
Who the phone?
Who to fight?
Who to dance with on a sunday night?

I'm reaching the very edge you know
Reaching the very edge
I'm going to the other side this time
Reaching the very edge

[CHORUS]
You're still breathing but you don't know why
Life's a bit and sometimes you die
You're still breathing but you just can't tell
Don't hold your breath
But the pretty things are going to hell

I am a drug, I am a dragon
I am your best jazz you ever seen
I am the dragon, I am the sky
I am the blood at the corner of your eye
I found the secrets I found gold
I find you out before you grow old
I find you out before you grow old

What is eternal? What is damned?
What is clay and what is sand?
Who to diss? Who to trust?
Who to listen to? Who to suss?

I'm reaching the very edge you know
I'm reaching the very edge
I'm going to the other side this time
I'm reaching the very edge

[CHORUS]

I am the dragon, I am the drug
I am your best jazz you've ever heard
I am the dragon, I'm the sky
I am the blood at the corner of your eye
I found the secrets I found gold
I found you out before you grow old
I found you out before you grow old
The pretty things are going to hell
They wore it out but they wore it well

  2. F.... M....

The Pretty Things should've made a response to this diss track

  3. A.... F....

Lends context to the Dark Star album

  4. A.... F....

Somehow harks back to the Scary Monsters era IMHO

  5. N.... A....

    A Master Piece !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. P.... T....

Someone please write a petition to make whoever can release the music video to this song, to release it.

  8. T.... R....

Nice words and nice guitar. Miss the late 90s. You could kid yourself then.

  9. 7.... ....

This song is a mess !! It totally loses focus and structure as some Bowie songs sometimes do ,.. and it's a bummer ,..because at the core,..this was a hit song , there's some great parts in it ,..

  10. t.... w....

Who would have thought it, David Bowie taking Collective Souls sound and using it in his song.

  11. S.... N....

    Oh Hell yeah!!!❤
goddamn! Too much brilliance for my tiny brain to absorb!

  12. C.... K....

    Fabulous drum fill at 0:58

  13. A.... R....

the thin white Duke never goes old

  14. P.... ....

Bowie really struggled in the 90s, this album generally just sounds like fairly average grade alt-rock for the time.
Outside was the only real spark of true creativity he had in that decade, tremendous album, although not even that one was well considered by critics (but it's held in higher consideration now as a misunderstood piece). It's a testament to his talent and his ability to gather great musicians together that even his more uninspired work is still relatively decent even though it feels forced.
He definitely found himself in the 2000s again however, and Blackstar might well be one of his greatest albums in his entire career.

    P.... ....

Just the eponymous track on Blackstar is a journey in itself, a musical tour de force. Genius

    and last one...

196? Tibetan book of the dead

  16. E.... H....

The cover is brilliant. The album's songs made for an uneven group and this is one of the best. It's on my personal db fav 100 list. And he is dead. And he is dead.

  17. R.... T....

    What's eternal... what's damned

  18. V.... C....

this proves he was better than ever in his later career. Reeves gabrels Bowie's best guitar player ever. rest in peace you crazy beautiful genius.😥

    V.... C....

Not really. Mick Ronson blows Gabrels out of the water imo.

    V.... C....

@Michael Fraser different .. not better IMHO

    V.... C....

so what else has Reeves done that I can explore please ?

    V.... C....

@Ade Fegan other than the Tin Machine stuff & 90s Bowie, he had a solo album in 98 (ft the talents of Bowie, Black Francis, Robert Smith, Mark Plati & more), recorded some songs with Doom Dogs, released another mid 00s record called Rocktonica & is currently touring with the Cure

  19. v.... l....

Umm I was in a good mood and halfway through this song I paused it to check a notification and then I was in a grrrr aghrrrr mood . I played this song after I paused it and it fits just perfectly.😤💞

  22. E.... P....

I guess that's what they get for driving their mamas and papas insane...

    E.... P....

I would like to shake your hand. well played.

  23. T.... M....

Great song. It was really freaky how this song was used in the movie "The Fat Girl' but, then again, that WHOLE movie was fkd up.

    T.... M....

you mean Fat Girl? That messed up French movie?

    T.... M....

Yeah, although, technically, that isn't even the actual title". The original title translates as "For My Sister". The movie is very disturbing but I think Catherine Breillat is pretty brilliant.

    T.... M....

+Dan Cooper Also the movie Stigmata

    T.... M....

+Dan Cooper I don't know any of her other work, so I don't know... I've seen a lot of questionable movies, but Fat Girl definitely stands out in the WTF? and Why?? categories.

    T.... M....

the movie is an amazing portrait to me of the frivolousness and cruelty of adolescent sexuality, the loneliness of being a social outcast and sibling rivalry. the movie is very shocking but the shock is not without purpose, unlike a lot of trash "extreme cinema" that's made ONLY to shock. what impresses me about her directing is the incredible vividness, the sense of reality a lot of her films have. There certainly aren't very many American filmmakers and definitely no mainstream ones that can create an experience that actually makes you forget youre watching a movie because it feels so real.I can understand why someone would hate this movie, though. It's definitely a fucked up film.

  24. S.... S....

Good song, but it goes on too long.

    S.... S....

    Steven Stark um, no ...

    S.... S....

Respect your opinion, but I have to desagree.

  25. B.... J....
