David Bowie - Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) Lyrics

Sue, I got the job
We’ll buy the house
You’ll need to rest
But now we’ll make it

Sue, the clinic called
The x-ray’s fine
I brought you home
I just said home

Sue, you said you wanted writ
“Sue the virgin” on your stone
For your grave

Why too dark to speak the words?
For I know that you have a son
Oh, folly, Sue

Ride the train I’m far from home
In a season of crime none need atone
I kissed your face

Sue, I pushed you down beneath the weeds
Endless faith in hopeless deeds
I kissed your face
I touched your face
Sue, Good-bye

Sue, I found your note
That you wrote last night
It can’t be right
You went with him

Sue, I never dreamed
I’m such a fool
Right from the start
You went with that clown

David Bowie Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) Comments
  1. N.... ....

How have I not seen this before today?!

    N.... ....

There is always more to discover! He was a prolific and generous artist. How lucky we were...how lucky we are.

  2. W.... L....

For those who did not realize it, this song shows Bowie's operatic training. I first realized this when I heard "candidate" from the Diamond Dog album, in which Bowie covered a full three octaves in one line of the song. I confirmed it elsewhere, but in this song, it is again obvious. A talented and well-trained singer. A pleasure to hear.

  3. R.... W....

She would call me late at night in years she pleaded with me, I am beautiful and I believed her.

  4. P.... ....

I've never liked Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) and I'm baffled why Bowie liked it so much. Many Bowie fans will upvote anything with urbanity regardless of tune. By comparison, Tis A Pity She Was A Whore was masterful. He's written over 150 great songs so why spend time on this static piece?

  5. s.... u....

Someone who I thought would never die and I was right.

  6. H.... ....

I don't understand how the Bowie official channel (including the official website) gets the lyrics wrong! "In a season of crime none need tone."

  7. P.... R....

Utterly influenced by Brecht / Weill

  8. R.... M....

Decodong the poetry behind the music. Wait what? Did Bowie just admit to commiting murder in his life here.

  9. Y.... v....

Fantastic. For me it is a journey to discover so much music I have never heard before from my hero, David Bowie. I didn’t know it excist. It makes me smile. I keep on searching, who knows...

  10. c.... ....

    Jazz + electronic.

  11. c.... b....

Very kind and cute lyrics , for example, he said what x ray is good, but in fact he's seriously ill. Its truly sad song ...

  12. s.... g....

lo máximo... eres espectacular que lata que ya no estés mi amor

  13. C.... Z....

    666k subscribers! Hell yeah!

  14. M.... L....

    What crap

  15. A.... N....

    sueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee the virgin

  16. r.... ....

This version is cool too, but I think I prefer the record's beefier one.

  17. N.... S....

    Milton Nascimento <3

  18. M.... ....

I have the VINYL of ★

  19. S.... R....

I never heard this version in the two+ years I’ve listened to Bowie religiously, only the Blackstar Version!! I wish in the Blackstar version he had kept most of the lyrics, though I like the sound of it more, maybe. Or maybe I mean that this original is just something different, I love them both!

  20. E.... S....

Se você ouvir a música "Cais" de Milton Nascimento, é muito parecida com esta canção.

  21. C.... Y....

Amazing, Great!. I came here because I read somewhere that in Brazil some think this sounds just like a 70's MPB classic. "Cais". I don´t think this is plagiarism. But here is ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqzZQj33t4Y

  22. R.... ....

If someone says they hate this song I'll Sue them

  23. R.... N....

This us the better version vocally...

  24. C.... C....

No se puede comparar con Cais, no desprecio el trabajo de Bowie en este tema pero Cais es eterna, Clube da Esquina es un disco eterno

  25. M.... L....

With Bowie you can find every kind of music, jazz, blues, rock, pop but most it got SOUL ✌🌞

  26. M.... H....

There's a great documentary on HBO this month called "The Last Five Years" and it covers David's remaining albums that he was able to complete before his death. I found this song through that documentary and I'm glad I did, it's a really cool song. The documentary is worth checking out and shows some never-before-performances from David as well.

  27. B.... B....

No. Blackstar version is way better.

  28. A.... a....

I just realized this, but this uses the same location and character as in the Absolute Beginners music video. Anyone else notice that?

  29. E.... E....

    Milton Nascimento > Bowie.

  30. A.... L....

It is incredible how this song resonates with my life. It brings back pain, and then cleanses me, frees me.
    Suuuuuue, goooood byyyyyyyye

  31. G.... ....

This sounds edgier than the one on blackstar but hey I like both.....and I miss Bowie.....He will always live on through his music and acting career but he was great....will always miss him....

  32. M.... P....

Das Beste zum Schluss. Unendlich dankbar!

  33. D.... m....

Who knew that goodbye at the end would mean something.

  34. B.... ....

hope i'm not the only one who likes this version better than the one on blackstar

  35. J.... C....

David Bowie, the best of the best in the hot dam world

  36. J.... S....

David Bowie plagiarized the melody of Cais, music by Milton Nascimento.

    J.... S....

Creation is imitation. I'm sure Milton heard something really similar before writing Cais.

    J.... S....

Cais + Weather Report, te be presicely. But he Bowie-ized it in what became that song with a specific character (Sue). That's what we call "composing" :)

    J.... S....

Easy enough to take legal action against the Bowie estate then.

  37. n.... ....

Heavy duty jazz. I like that version.

  38. T.... H....

I like this better than the version from Blackstar.

  39. T.... Q....

Blackstar is one of my favourite Bowie albums, but I really wish this was the version of Sue used in the final album.
The newer one has good new instrumentation, but I feel the vocals fit the music much better here.

  40. A.... A....

Other than the great song, I have to say, the video is a work of a genius. Sadly there's no name on it.
Correction: found it from other sources.
The song was recorded earlier this year with the Maria Schneider Orchestra and produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti.
Shot in London, the film was directed by Tom Hingston and features studio footage from Jimmy King of David and the Maria Schneider orchestra in New York.

  41. T.... S....

Brilliant. Can't get used to the fact that I will never experience the thrill of hearing new music from David Bowie again. Ever since I first saw Ashes to Ashes on TV when I was 9 years old.... perhaps we will see each other again in the next life.

  42. p.... ....

He's channeling something here. I can feel he's calling to Sue. Beautiful music. Bless his heart.💔⚡️

  43. w.... ....

    mc.caslin play,s Bowie

  44. p.... ....

If you put your Dark Star out in the Sun a Galaxy appears on the Cover,…he did this in secret with the Cover makers as a parting gift and as a statement that behind the Dark is the Light.

  45. s.... c....

    this has been depressing.!!!

  46. L.... ....

What a brilliantly beautiful heart-wrenching goodbye...Class act, my friend. Words do not suffice...

  47. F.... H....

I prefer the Blackstar version. The opening is more concentrated and aggressive which heightens the dissonance between the E, C# and G and the instrumentation is less "in your face" which makes the song easier to listen to.

  48. O.... G....

Finally I could watch the video on my Phone, this and the Blackstar versions are amazing, in some days are going to be a quarter of year from his death, its very bad that the best musicians are dying in these days

  49. R.... ....

Go listen to the 7 minute (Real version) of this, music videos always end up neutering the actual music in some way (mostly in length). That version is amazing and after hearing it i think the album version maybe departed a little too much from the full on jazz of the original. Both versions aim for slightly different aesthetics anyways and they are successful.

  50. K.... 1....

The Bond (James Bond) of all Bond Themes. Well Done Mr Bowie Sir !. Rest or Die. (slight British titter there !. )

  51. R.... R....

    This is phenomenal.

  52. E.... R....

    Love this one!
    We miss you, Starman. <3

  53. L.... O....

Maria Schneider is amazing. so is McCaslin.

  54. j.... p....

David said none of his songs were autobiographical, but where did this come from?

  55. g.... w....

It's interesting how complaining is actually in the nature of men. People come here, they enjoy this song and it starts over and over again: it should have been included, it's so much better.

The truth is that David knew better, it as the very least doesn't fit the album so much and overall it's not that "harsh" as the other part of the album. It is obvious that this variation would spoil the whole image of Blackstar, which a concept album. I'm not even saying that having two songs is better.

My personal opinion is that Sue on Blackstar is better, those beats are just irreplaceable for an album like this and for some reason lyrics sound more dramatic there and I think it should have been a part of the reason.

  56. v.... a....

    this just won a grammy

  57. T.... J....

This version makes more sense. It ends with goodbye

  58. B.... D....

    You went with that clown

  59. B.... E....

I bought Blackstar as soon as it was available. I loved Sue on that record. Then I got Nothing Has Changed, and I love this version. Wonderful to have two such different productions of this song. Thanks Mr Jones.

  60. W.... C....

Thematically, this seems to be a story that combines elements of 'Death of a Salesman' with 'Double Indemnity'...

I wonder if 'Sue' is, in any way, referring to Angie. Although, given the last lyric, it would seem a bit harsh for a man seeing this album as his 'swan song'; as closure...

  61. P.... W....

The way he holds and bends vocal notes is breathtaking..

  62. 1.... ....

    Rest in Peace Davy Jones

  63. G.... P....

    beautiful bowie

  64. I.... ....

    I TOUCHED YOUR FAAAAAACCEEEEEE

  65. t.... ....

I think that Sue is the same celestial girlfriend, as always, but perhaps emphasising the maternal Peggy Sue element, from the fact that he knows too well to the point of folly that she has a son (David), and that he is a committing a crime so seasonal that "none need atone"! But perhaps there are elements of Hermione too in the bit about the note at the end.

  66. M.... W....

    Wonder if they'll ignore this?

  67. E.... m....

This is Just SO GODDARN GOOD!

  68. J.... P....

    Wow, wow, wow!!!

  69. J.... S....

This version has actual Bowie saxophone.

    J.... S....

+John Smith This is Donny McCaslin playing sax and the same drummer as on Blackstar.

    J.... S....

i guess i got my info mixed up. i read that the sax parts on the single version were by Bowie, perhaps written by him?

    J.... S....

You probably were thinking of the first version of Tis a Pity She Was a Whore which was a demo he created in his home studio and did play sax on. He released it 2014 as B side of this first version of Sue. So now it's very interesting to listen to the two versions of both songs, isn't it.

    J.... S....

    @Ali Kin
    Indeed! I love both versions.

  70. J.... Y....

Thanks Jess. What an amazing sound! He was going into some beautiful crossover landscapes. David you were the voyageur that knows no fear, only new worlds to discovery!

  71. D.... P....

This could have been on Outside; it reminds me of a song like A Small Plot of Land.

  72. G.... G....

    jazzy breakbeats! cool

  73. G.... G....

i meant live longer? or die quicker??

  74. T.... U....

Why this version is different from the album? Btw, this version is much better! I prefer the old jazz style than the modern progressive rock jazz

  75. p.... c....

Great interpreter, is the first time i hear this track and i just can say WANDERFULL.

  76. a.... ....

103 persone possono amputarsi le orecchie.

  77. A.... ....

I wish this version was on Blackstar

  78. A.... R....

This is sad :( RIP David Bowie, you were a true legend ily

  79. q.... ....

I love you, graces for the Your immense work

  80. M.... K....

It sounds right out of West Side Story and Leonard Bernstein.

  81. P.... P....

such a shame we'll never see this live.

    P.... P....

+Paul Peart-Smith We would never have seen it live anyway because Bowie had no intention of touring again. Obviously he continued to write and record new music, but the tours were long over before his final illness.

    P.... P....

+DarylH56 probably, but I would of been holding out for it anyway. This new band seemed to light a new fire under him. Ah well :)

    P.... P....

+Paul Peart-Smith Couldn't agree more about your views of his new band. Bowie was a genius in every sense - he knew when a sound had become stale, and he would switch it around to make something new. Even still, he kept relationships with his old band members and didn't just cast them aside.

  82. B.... R....

    endless faith in hopeless deeds

  83. m.... a....

God giveth , God taketh RIP D.B.

  84. R.... H....

    Sinatresque

  85. t.... ....

    sure is trippy David lol!

  86. S.... J....

you have broken this Sue's heart, sir....goodbye.....

  87. H.... ....

Ziggy is now indeed StarDust.... RIP.

  88. C.... B....

News guy wept and told us, cried so much his face was wet...

    C.... B....

+Clive Bindley "News guy wept WHEN HE told us..."

    C.... B....

    Nope.
I have the original LP with lyrics so don't argue..you are WRONG.
Try looking at a lyric site.

    C.... B....

Thanks, I knew that was the original lyric...however it's possible that when Bowie sang this song in concert he sang it differently, as he did with other songs at times.
So he could have said, " when he told us "

    C.... B....

Cop knelt, and kissed the feet of a priest..

    C.... B....

..... "News guy wept and told us the news, the earth was really dying."

  89. B.... H....

Incredible sounds. i can't believe I just discovered this amazing music today. rest in peace Mr. Bowie

  90. f.... f....

r.i.p. dave, we will be missing you

  91. p.... ....

    [Sue] Goodbye

  92. V.... E....

He told us well over a year ago (i.e. in November 2014) that he was dying... :-/ (11/01-2016)

    V.... E....

I see it in everything from the past year. Very clear in the ones they took in the suit and hat...Even though he's smiling, I can't bear to look at them.

    V.... E....

    @Adam Thorton
The musicians didn't, necessarily. Maybe knew in part. They were just folks he'd met recently after seeing them play a club in the Village. Visconti is one of the few who knew from the beginning, and he explained that he'd been diagnosed late in 2014, had chemo. Been given the all clear in summer 2015, then found out in November that it had spread and was inoperable.

You can see it here. http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/david-bowie-lost-hair-eyebrows-7192653

    V.... E....

@D Menard Thanks for the info.

    V.... E....

Vidar Edland He did? I don't remember that.

    V.... E....

Deirdre inDC So DB didn't know it was terminal until November of 2015. He got an " all clear" in the summer which turned out to be a temporary remission. Cancer sucks.
