David Bowie - Rock 'N' Roll Suicide Lyrics

Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth
You pull on your finger, then another finger, then your cigarette
The wall-to-wall is calling, it lingers, then you forget
Oh, you're a rock 'n' roll suicide

You're too old to lose it, too young to choose it

And the clock waits so patiently on your song
You walk past a cafe but you don't eat when you've lived too long
Oh, no, no, no, you're a rock 'n' roll suicide

Chev brakes are snarling as you stumble across the road

But the day breaks instead so you hurry home
Don't let the sun blast your shadow
Don't let the milk float ride your mind
You're so natural - religiously unkind

Oh no love! You're not alone
You're watching yourself but you're too unfair
You got your head all tangled up but if I could only make you care
Oh no love! You're not alone
No matter what or who you've been
No matter when or where you've seen
All the knives seem to lacerate your brain
I've had my share, I'll help you with the pain
You're not alone

Just turn on with me and you're not alone
Let's turn on with me and you're not alone
Let's turn on and be not alone
Gimme your hands cause you're wonderful [2x]
Oh gimme your hands.

I was way out there. So I typed in this.

  10. R.... M....

The only time suicide doesn’t suck. He was a fathers voice to so many perhaps something somewhere unknown. You are wonderful. So don’t ever stop to wonder why your life matters Just wait for the next shooting star to bring you back home. And transcend pain

  11. J.... D....

This song means so much to me. I really was a rock n roll suicide when I was a young man. I had a profound habit for cocaine and speed. I would go for fortnights without sleep and hardly any food. My mind was fucked, my body was weak and I had grown far from society and friends. I really was on the very fringe of society and I was dying. A good woman rescued me.

  12. j.... b....

Picture the scene : there's little faggy me and a whole lot of drugs and a whole lot of hurt and confusion and the gaping maw of the Void. .... and standing between me and all that there's little faggy looking Davy Jones from Brixton telling me I'm watching myself but I'm being too unfair , trying to make me care screaming at me that I'm not alone and here I am ... here I still am typing out my love and my gratitude and ... that's all.

  13. D.... V....

no one has achieved the same level of putting chords together.

  15. r.... ....

So much respect has to be given to the ‘wonderful’ and very under appreciated Mick Ronson for his assistance in providing the arrangements for this and so many other important David Bowie songs..his contribution cannot be underestimated.

Lyrics, tremolo on electric guitar, 12 string to open.. genius in construction, production and coming from a good place.

Not like the absolute shite put out by wannabes these days. Cold play.. etc.
Fk off with your vapid melodies and nothing to say.

  21. J.... P....

Context matters......I'd be willing to bet big money all the thumbs down weren't alive when this was released. I was 15, living in SoCal behind the Orange Curtain at the beach, and it blew just about everybody's freakin' minds. Landmark album, playing, writing, production.........a true Classic.

As depressed queer teenager who always felt different from the rest of the world, I can say this song has got me through so much. I listen to this song every time harmful or suicidal thoughts cross my mind, every time I feel like I’m sinking in my own darkness. It seems like he’s singing directly to me, like he’s telling me that I’m not alone and that I can survive this. And I always feel a little better. Thank you, David.

    A.... D....

    Ho no love!
    You're not alone!

My parents played this for me tonight, I feel so lucky to have been born in the same world as Bowie.

  45. N.... R....

I have a lot of younger online friends (teens; I'm a young adult) and knowing how hard teenage life is, I always make sure they listen to this song at least once. Not just hear it, but really *listen* to it. I tell them how important the song's message is, and that even if they're going through an extremely difficult time, that they're not alone, that I've had my share and I'll help them with their pain, that they're wonderful.

  46. C.... C....

    Too beautiful for words......

  47. D.... ....

This song is great......BUT he has never perfomed it that great than he did at the Tokyo concert. Gosh how much do i love his life version of it.

    Brilliant

  54. M.... W....

I first played this song in 1974 after a suicide attempt in which the drugs I used blew my mind apart and I nearly died. When I regained consciousness I had the mind of a child for a long time and felt everything very keenly. I swapped my Akai tape-deck for 30 grams of the finest hashish oil from Kandahar in India. At the same time I borrowed this album from a friend. When "Rock n Roll Suicide" came on I really felt it speaking to me, like it was written for me. I felt the same about Pink Floyd's "Shine on you Crazy Diamond." That was when I realised that David Bowie was one of the greatest song writers of all time.

    M.... W....

    @Stephen Bray
Yeah I'm in good order as well. My heads in the best state it's ever been.

    M.... W....

Michael Wilcox I always pushed things to the edge but then I would stop. I'm 57 now and still enjoy a few beers and the odd puff but I respect my life more than anything.

    M.... W....

    @Stephen Bray
Yes exactly it's the same with me, except I'm 71 and cannot afford to knock myself about too much any more. The blow now is terrible compared to what it used to be.

    M.... W....

Michael Wilcox I hope I live that long. I too feel the effects and am always moving towards cutting down. I haven't slept in a bed in five years since my wife left me and the kids grew up and moved away. But there are times when I don't hurt, and I'm amazed that I actually feel really good inside and out.

End chords are similar to the theme of Dionne Warwicks «Don’t make me over». Didn’t know that until the song by her was played on the radio now.

  57. R.... B....

Would have to wonder if this wasn’t in some small way inspired by ‘let it loose’ by the stones of the same year??

About five years ago I tried to kill myself and came close to it. I was hospitalized for a short time and once I was released I remember sitting on the floor of my room crying when my dad heard me and put on this song. I laughed through the tears as he took my hand and we danced together to it. This song means so much to me and so does Bowie. R.I.P and thank you for everything.

There are a lot of songs that have the same message as this one. I think "Rock and Roll Suicide" is probably the most effective one. It seems so much more genuine, and I think that's because it comes in the two parts. The first half has kind of an aimless feeling, which sort of tricks you into thinking this is a typical song to listen to when you're sad. Then it picks up, and tells you that everything is okay. Because the song has both parts, it's so much more genuine.
