David Bowie - Lady Grinning Soul Lyrics

She'll come, she'll go.
She'll lay belief on you
Skin sweet with musky oil
The lady from another grinning soul

Cologne she'll wear. Silver and Americard
She'll drive a beetle car
And beat you down at cool Canasta

And when the clothes are strewn
don't be afraid of the room
Touch the fullness of her breast.
Feel the love of her caress
She will be your living end

She'll come, she'll go.
She'll lay belief on you
But she won't stake her life on you
How can life become
her point of view

And when the clothes are strewn
don't be afraid of the room
Touch the fullness of her breast.
Feel the love of her caress
She will be your living end [repeat]

What interesting instrumental arrangements he did during this phase. I'm just wondering where he got the idea for the pianos? It's like classical Lounge Jazz meets rock and roll crooner AKA this is Bowie music LOL cannot be described, indescribable

  10. Y.... I....

When this song was first released in 1973 I was 6 years young & even though being so young it still floored me...

Our house (thankfulky) was full of a wide eclectic range of musical genres & nothing was ever really off bounds, as I had others in their teens who were playing things from solo David Bowie acts or bands & we even watched all those great musicals on TV...

This song would pop up periodically through the decades & it always stirred me & you may laugh but remember this was way before the internet could give you an answer within seconds, were as knowledge was passed down by word of mouth from my generation & older...

I never really got to know for sure who sang this song (when I was growing up) & when I was thrust into picking up bass guitar instead of playing drums or lead guitar like I wanted to, I was away on my own musical journey but I always thought that voice belonged to Dusty Springfield!..

    I know right... lol

But after all these years David Bowie had that ability not to just be physically androgynous but also vocally & he often changed his vocal styles of delivery through all those decades of writing & singing songs & to be honest I'm glad I was fooled (by my ears) in thinking this was Dusty Springfield because she did sing like the way David is singing in this song but also because I (eventually) was so amazed to find out that this song I loved since kid was sung by one of my (to be later on in life) musical heroes...

What a talent... He could invent characters as a persona on stage/dress & look like a woman but be all man/act/sing & write songs & his talent was just endless...

Many didn't take to his acting but I thought he stole the show from a cult classic 80s film to me " Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence " along with Takeshi Beat Kitano's brutal at times but also sympathetic role of nation still living in the past as regards to how one looked on life & if they were going to be caught during any wars...

To me that is still a hidden gem of a movie about 2 clashes of cultures who are so alike but at war & I know many stated that it was a love story between Bowies character & Sakamoto's character it also worked just in the context of how it played out... Of a western belief of live to fight another day & theres no shame in it & the stark contrast of an eastern belief that failure (even during the 40s the Japanese still were so attached to the past) for them meant committing Seppuku/Hari-Kiri basically committing honourable suicide by their own hands by disembowlment...

But it was the story of quite a few of the characters in that movie that to me makes it a hidden gem... As you have the understanding character of Tom Conti's character Mr Lawrence who has stayed with & studio eastern beliefs & the contrast of both cultures I think had many layers on the screen than I think they thought they were going for...

The ending is just heart breaking (I won't spoil it) & if you haven't seen it I urge you to watch it for its multi layered story & great performances from Tom Conti/David Bowie/Ryuichi Sakamoto & Takeshi " Beat " Kitano, as just a few of the stand out performances & Sakamoto's film score along with collaborating with David Sylvian on the track " Forbidden Colours " adds to an amazing piece of film that has rightly found its audience now & has also rightly gathered cult status...

Strangely enough I still like to still think that maybe David either wrote this for Dusty Springfield or in a way either subconsciously or deliberately delivered his vocals in such an ambiguous way that it could be male or female singing...

Either way the song still has pulling power & still holds up to this day & I absolutely love Mike Garson's piano playing at the start & all the way through this song as David's vocals & Garsin's piano playing combined make this song stand out from just being another song & this is Why David Bowie was one of thee best musical innovavotars of his generation...

His last Album he chose to share with us " Black Star " was one of the pheonix rising from the ashes musical moments only to be darkened by his death by like a true innovator he channelled what he was going through & gave those very personal moments back to his fans & music lovers all over the world & what a swansong to finish on as he was always pushing to try new things musically & visually...

What Do We Have Now with regards to an music industry that was so alive & thriving to the point there were literally millions of solo acts & bands to choose from through all the decades of all those artists constantly changing the landscape of what we would be listening to next & although it's sad that Streaming has destroyed such a behemoth of an industry we still have so many solo acts & bands to pass on to the current generation & to let them hear & hopefully keep music alive in a performing sense as I know as a listener it will never die in my heart & I Thank All those solo acts & bands that went out of their way to deliver what are now considered classics that should be treasured & never forgotten but passed on from generation to generation as we might not produce as much or next to nowhere near the talent & music of yesteryear but we can keep it alive by passing it on in a listening capacity so that the light will never fade & who knows it may plant seed that might grow back into a musical scene that was so alive/vibrant & versatile that we thought it would never end but alas is no a pale imitation of itself...

So let's keep playing all these different genres of music to the younger generations & at least keep it alive if only as a listening preference as to a writing & performing preference that was the days of our lives played out on vinyl & never ending stories of musical magic & wonder...

He personified the mystical Holy Graal, in a living woman, (Claudia Lennear) in creating this song. He touched upon this theme with "Soul Love", too, when he sang about the "flaming dove".....

  17. J.... D....

It's actually musky "oil" not "odour" Just an FYI on this masterpiece I often see misquoted, even in "official lyrics" (listen closely!)

  18. M.... ....

Great song, I was listening to this in middle school when it came out. Fantastic album. I must be a freak because everyone else was into Deep Purple or whatever.

  19. L.... G....

It's no surprise that bands like Queen were influenced by this man. I can constantly hear hints to Bowie's music on some of the early songs from Freddie and Brian. Parts of this solo reminded me to Queen's 'Tenement Funster'. The guitar solo in 'White Queen', specially in live performances, has some hints to 'Moonage Daydream''s guitar work. In the other hand, another song from this album, 'Prettiest Star' sounds a lot like a Queen song. And if that wasn't enough, less than 10 years later both giants came together and made 'Under Pressure'. In fact, Bowie wasn't happy with the way his voice sounded in the song, crazy right? You've got to love Bowie and Queen.

I have commented before. This is sheer genius. A humle man from England gets this music together for us? He should have a statue in the middle of London.....You had the Beatles and they admitted how they were a bunch of musical fuckups. Bowie came along...made this music. Genius.

  63. R.... B....

This is one of David Bowie personal favourite Bowie Songs .
This is what David said of this great classic ......

    Lady Grinning Soul

Mike Garson's piano opens with the most ridiculous and spot-on re-creation of a 19th Century music hall 'exotic' number. I can see now the 'poses plastiques' as if through a smoke-filled bar. Fans, castanets and lots of Spanish black lace and little else. Sexy, mmm? And for you, Madam?

This was written for a wonderful young girl whom I've not seen for more than 30 years. When I hear this song she's still in her 20s, of course.

A song will put you tantalisingly close to the past, so close that you can almost reach out and touch it. The sound of ghosts again.

  64. s.... f....

Remember the first time I pulled this out of my mother's record collection 30 years ago! A classic and instrumentally stunning, think it 'a the piano, anyway hits deep!
