David Bowie - God Knows I'm Good Lyrics

I was walking through the counters of a national concern
And a cash machine was spitting by my shoulder

And I saw the multitude of faces, honest, rich and clean
As the merchandise exchanged and money roared
And a woman hot with worry slyly slipped a tin of stewing steak
Into the paper bag at her side
And her face was white with fear in case her actions were observed
So she closed her eyes to keep her conscience blind

Crying
"God knows I'm good
God knows I'm good
God knows I'm good
God may look the other way today

God knows I'm good
God knows I'm good
God knows I'm good
God may look the other way today"

Then she moved toward the exit clutching tightly at her paper bag
Perspiration trickled down her forehead
And her heart it leapt inside her as the hand laid on her shoulder
She was led away bewildered and amazed
Through her deafened ears the cash machines were shrieking on the counter
As her escort asked her softly
for her name
And a crowd of honest people rushed to help a tired old lady
Who had fainted to the whirling
wooden floor

Crying
"God knows I'm good
God knows I'm good
God knows I'm good
Surely God won't look
the other way

God knows I'm good
God knows I'm good
God knows I'm good
Surely God won't look
the other way"

David Bowie God Knows I'm Good Comments
  1. Max R.

E venne portata via confusa e imbarazzata

    Piangendo
    “Dio sa che sono buona
    Dio sa che sono buona
    Dio sa che sono buona
    certamente Dio non guardera’
    da un’altra parte

    Dio sa che sono buona
    Dio sa che sono buona
    Dio sa che sono buona
    certamente Dio non guardera’
    da un’altra parte”

I miss you, you were such a huge part of my life growing up and still are. RIP David they broke the mold when you were born.

  18. clarenceclutterbuck

All that religion related soul searching for attempting to steal a can of stewing steak. Hardly worth the aggro. The old dear should have been bolder and tried to secrete away something grass fed and organic from the fresh meat counter.

  19. Matthew Bluhm

why don't we all get together and have a party?

    Alf Tupper

I remember spending a summer by the lake .Every night I would take the boat across the lake with this album and these songs blazing in my walkman.Singing at the top of my lungs, sound travels so fast on water!I must'ave woken up some poor people trying to get to sleep. Thanks for the upoload,it brings back some really groovy memories man .

"So she closed her eyes to keep her conscience blind".....what a line...

  24. Ali Jones

With a voice like that - why wouldn't God love him - even though he didn't love God ?!

  25. Sean Whittaker

i hope there is not another talent like bowies being lost to the world. In these days of manafactured boy bands you would probably find it to difficult to breakthrough and give up. I think we should have to pay to listen to music on any medium. It puts food in the belly of the artist and means they can keep producing their music. I worry for the future of the industry.

  31. Johnathan E.Mccosh

    Louise Voraujan

Likewise, for me was 1973. He's remained s big part of my life ever since. Think that's why I hurt so much. God bless David. RIP.

  32. April Hall

This song guts me, always has.

"So she closed her eyes, to keep her conscience blind."

    Dustshoe

There is a touch of Dickens about the lyrics here. It's sympathetic and very inventive lyrically. It's really one of David's most under-rated songs.

    duane dogsdayout

+Dustshoe yes! this is so freakin good! all his lyrics are masterpieces!

    shaxan

...and a touch of Jhetro Tull about the music, obviously.

    dragondog 59

saddens me now, 9/5/18. always .................

  33. EDH 1970

I'm 45 now, when we used to go shopping when I was little, dad usually had this playing in the car, now dad passed away at the end of September 2015 and Davids' gone to join him, I'm sure they'll have some great shindigs together. God bless

    DaniEl Ben Freeman

JupiterJulia I never said he wasn't talented. Unfortunately he used his talents for evil, to spread Satanic teachings.

    JupiterJulia

what i am saying is mentioning Satan does not make him a Satanist. by that logic i'm a Satanist for using any artistic analogy involving the Devil. mentioning his past troubles with cocaine and paranoia that mixed him up with the cult does not make *him* a Satanist. He himself said he was not a Satanist. what more proof do you need, conspiracy theories are just that - conspiracy theories. His song Quicksand is often used as an argument point but he himself has addressed that it was written during a bad point in his life and most of the lines were purely artistic. the man was not a Satanist, there isn't much more to be said.

    DaniEl Ben Freeman

JupiterJulia Satanists consider lying to be an art form.
His final videos are all the proof you need. Deeming these things to be mere rock theatrics is foolish. If you use similar Satanic references in your music, even if you don't know it, you are serving Satan.
Bowie knowingly served Satan until his last breath.

    JupiterJulia

I'm sorry dude, sounds like you're trying to convince yourself at this point.
By the way, I am an Atheist, I don't believe in Satan. I can't possibly be serving something that (in my opinion) doesn't exist. Bowie did not serve Satan and admitted that he did not at the age of 54. Conspiracy theories and personal feelings do not apply to his actual, factual religious beliefs, which were not Satanic.

    DaniEl Ben Freeman

JupiterJulia like I said, whether you know it or not, you are serving Satan.
Yes, even as a deluded atheist. Denying the very existence of G-d pleases Satan no end. Everyone on earth has a master, G-d or Satan, light or darkness. There is no neutral position. Your unbelief puts you on the side of darkness.

I love him. He's so deep. Intense. Love his story telling. Good song.

  44. salvador hernandez

This song makes me cry every time. The way our society has grown is great, but also terrifying. Every day I put myself in miserable states to push myself into trying to change my surroundings. It may sound self damaging, but this is what is getting me through school. I plan to join the U.N. and make a difference however small. We need to be good to our friends, family, and neighbours. Sorry if this message upsets you in any way...

    Tony Corden

+salvador hernandez Un abrazo Salvador. Tienes el mismo nombre com Allende de Chile

    Star Tsar

  48. Ron Zucker

@Keith Christmas: I feel terrible that I have never known your name. I have heard and loved (and emulated on my own 6 string) your playing for, well, more years than I think either of us cares to admit to. I'm now on your channel, and need to buy some of your work. One guitarist to another, your slide playing is lovely. Thank you for providing all of us with your playing and your talent, for sharing it all with us.

  49. TheLinz78

I couldn't really give that comment a thumbs up or down, as I didn't want to suggest this lady getting jailed was a good thing, nor did I want to say your comment was bad. But I appreciated it. The world's a nasty place at times. Thanks for sharing the story.

  50. Henrik Harbin

Years ago when the 3 strikes law was first put in effect I heard a real news story that I remembered when I heard this. A 91 year old blind woman was arrested for stealing a can of dog food from a store shelf. It was her third arrest and she hot 25 to life. She didn't have a dog.

  51. john gyle

Told my chick today to stop shop lifting, then played her this song. Hope it has worked.. Although I do like the odd piece of Sirloin Steak.!!

  52. Brad

he was a mirror. for some reason he could channel whatever he wanted to seemingly on demand. At his prime he was able to do this effortlessly, I mean for a solid decade he was pretty much on the cutting edge. I think Space Oddity is the first album where he started to find his songwriting voice.

  53. stowe07

    yes, i was being funny

  54. schpoogie

Did you read the comment I was replying to?

  55. stowe07

    If only what?

  56. schpoogie

Thanks for the tip...didn't read what else you had to say though. If only someone would tell me to go home

  57. Jake Longg

A tip for my fellow commenters:
No one reads more then one line. Go home now.

  58. ginajeanify

I always loved this song and found it pleasant....until one day Mum told me in the car she wanted this played at her funeral.....THANKS FOR THAT IMAGE MUM!!! However good song choice! =)

  59. Ary vanHarrick

this is truely literature in a song... girl with the matchsticks... living in about THE richest country in world, people tend to easily forget how harsh things can be(come) when/once you really 've got nothing, & tend to look the other way
(to me, the word cashmachines still sounds just as accurate, paints the picture perfectly even when they might not be as noisy, or standing on counters like in the 60s)

  60. Keith Christmas

I played the 6-string on this...

    GV3G - GLaDOSv3 Gaming

  62. Katherine Roberts

My mum & dad don't listen to David Bowie or any other 70s/80s music, infact my dad generally listens to chart music and techno etc, and he's almost 65

  63. Julie Stretch

    Pardon!

  64. Julie Stretch

I think the difference is, that as you grow older, you may well find yourself in a position like this, whereras at 13 years of age, you are probably still looked after by mum and dad.....x

  65. ricaldrich

I went to several Bowie concerts when I was young and they were always full of people dressed in Bowie style (for lack of a different phrase) I never really noticed this at other concerts like Zeplin, Joe Walsh the Who or Nugent even the tubes did not attract that crowd then many years later I have gone to Marilyn Man5on and NiN concerts and there they are although much younger than myself now a dressedup in their garb I've seen man5on 4 times always the samething funny how everything old is new

  66. Johnny5thWheel

Reading the comments, I think it's compelling how Bowie can still inspire such obsession in new generations of music fans even 40 years on.
We're putting on a Bowie tribute gig tonight where 8 acts each play a Bowie song. Very much looking forward to it!

  67. Washington Irving

From Youtube videos, you would swear everyone who likes 60/70's music is 12

  68. Katherine Roberts

Gotta love david bowie(: Whoever said the younger generation hasnt heard true music? Because looking at the comments on this video.. I beg to differ. And i'm 13.

  80. quidnick

@sickofthistown agreed. the music is great, massage is repetitive and false in many ways. that makes it just average... but we know from space oddity bowie can do better than this.

  81. ilikethingsfromjapan

    im here because of ratemykipz

  82. TheThroney

  83. moby boy

    charming

  84. crowbarofdeath

Unless I misinterpreted you, I'm going to have to disagree. I don't think the song is saying that it is ok to steal in the right circumstances. I think the message is that people shouldn't allow the situation where the woman has to choose between doing something wrong and going hungry,

  85. Finalfantasypianos14

One of my absolute favorite Bowie songs!
