David Bowie - Five Years Lyrics

Pushing through the market square
So many mothers sighing
News had just come over
We had five years left to cry in

News guy wept and told us
Earth was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet
Then I knew he was not lying

I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies
I saw boys, toys, electric irons and TVs
My brain hurt like a warehouse
It had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things
To store everything in there

And all the fat-skinny people
And all the tall-short people
And all the nobody people
And all the somebody people
I never thought I'd need so many people

A girl my age went off her head
Hit some tiny children
If the black hadn't a-pulled her off
I think she would have killed them

A soldier with a broken arm
Fixed his stare to the wheels of a Cadillac
A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest
And the queer threw up at the sight of that

I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine
Don't think you knew you were in this song

And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor
And I thought of Ma and I wanted to get back there
Your face, your race, the way that you talk
I kiss you, you're beautiful, I want you to walk

We've got five years stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that's all we've got

We've got five years, what a surprise
Five years stuck on my eyes
We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that's all we've got

We've got five years stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that's all we've got

We've got five years, what a surprise
Five years stuck on my eyes
We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that's all we've got

Five years
Five years
Five years
Five years

Bowie’s screaming and crying at the end was real. Decked out in his Ziggy persona. Actually falling apart at the recording. Producers watching in terror as Bowie bawled into the microphone.

Today, the skies in São Paulo got dark from Amazon Forest burning. And no one cares. No one will care until it's too late. The world already died, we are just waiting it finish to burn out.

I never felt so helpless before.

    A.... N....

    Humans are stupid

    A.... N....

@Nuthatch282 The ones on the Left are for sure.

  65. S.... N....

However perfectly this song expressed my feelings about the future at 15. and no matter how many times five years and another five and another five have passed, and no matter how many reprieves there have been in the interim, the feeling this song induces only intensifies over time, perhaps because each five years we survive brings us five years closer to the five we won't-and I doubt we'll know we're in them until the last five days, maybe, or hours, or minutes--are upon us.

Only now does it occur to me that maybe that five years actually passed already, and the world we knew is dead, along with the people we were...and that we are only shadows of creatures with free will, blindly repeating the motions of life under the illusion of decisiveness, like the ghosts in "The Sixth Sense," who don't know they're dead.

But it no longer sounds to me like a confrontation with a fearsome future; today, to me, it sounds like a memoir, a eulogy, or a requiem-for America.

  66. H.... S....

The lyrics in this song is awsome .David Bowie was a musical genius

This song always reminds me that due to climate change we may not have that much time left with the earth we grew up loving🔥🌎

  72. D.... S....

Although we never quite reached the mark of our 5th anniversary, this song reflects the beauty & anguish I lived through as my wife fought leukemia. I listen to this song every February 14th on our anniversary. I suppose the real tragedy of this song is how Bowie recognizes how love is capable of conquering our primordial proclivities for world destruction & yet we simply choose the latter.
Anyhow, RIP, Mary. I can still see you smiling & waving from that ice cream parlor window. Till we meet again, my love...

  73. c.... C....

Bowie has made a lot of great albums and changed his style so many times but when he made this album he must've known he would never make anything close to this ever again and a lot of bands will never make an album like this ever. It's a rarity when every song on an album is awesome and this is totally awesome stuff from
"Five Year's" to "Rock n roll suicide"

  74. C.... D....
