David Bowie - Ching-A-Ling Lyrics

Whilst flying through an azure cloud
A crystal girl I'd spy
She kissed the blue bird's honey tongue
And stuttered as she sighed
I wish to sing the chicken song
Ching-a-ling song is fine
I'd give my jewels and caviar
To make this daydream mine

Ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling,
Ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling,
Ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling

While stepping through a heaven's eye
Two lover souls we spied
They wished the cloud boys sang to me
A cheerful happy cry
We love to play our love-strong hearts
No better do we know
No gifts of money do we give
For love is all we own

Ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling,
Ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling,
Ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling
Ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling,
Ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling,
Ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling, ching-a-ling

David Bowie Ching-A-Ling Comments
  1. M.... O....

    Its not on spotifyyyyyy

  2. H.... S....

Surpringlingly good sound and very sweet, I associate with the songs on The world of David Bowie and Image.

  3. J.... P....

There is something simple yet deep in this ,i love it

  4. D.... W....

I prefer the original release version. Song doesn't find it's place until after Bowie's verse, the producers were right to cut it and start with the woman's voice, David just doesn't sit well with the tune for some reason. We have him in the backing vocals where his distinctive tone works better.

  5. e.... ....

Bowies complementary backing vocals are nice and dark and very reminiscent of his style and backing vocals on his later work. I like. Little snippets of the future genius

  6. b.... s....

Hermoine was Bowie's first wife. He wrote her a song on Space Oddity

    b.... s....

They never married. She left him because of his wandering ways and went off to film 'Song of Norway'! However, not only did we get 'Letter to Hermione' out of it, her abandoning Bowie seems to have contributed to the yearning in his voice which I for one heard ever after. Apparently, towards the end of his life, he got in touch with her again, possibly to say goodbye, and in the 2013 video for 'Where Are We Now?', he's wearing a 'Song of Norway' T-shirt.

    b.... s....

Yes, you are correct. Song For Norway was on the t-shirt in the Where Are We Now video. I am impressed that you got that error on my part. You must be a real fan. Look me up on Facebook under Michael Reynolds in Hollywood

    b.... s....

@blackmore4 I at the time all of what you mention ocurred, I wondered what Iman might have thought of that. I'm thinking - as they were so close together - that she would have encouraged him to reach out and make that connection.

  7. d.... ....

Bowie & Hutch is a fascinating book . Hermione and Hutch had nice voices .

  8. P.... ....

    great version!

  9. B.... S....

There's a similar sound (Refrain) in Bowie's later song ' Saviour Machine'.

  10. A.... Z....

    Bellissima......

  11. J.... S....

woman singing is Hermione Farthingale, Bowie's girlfriend at the time...she was a classical ballet student and only 19 years old at the time...

    J.... S....

so this is the girl referred to in letter to Hermione on the space oddity album pity he didnt marry her and not that angie

  12. V.... V....

David Bowie, Hermione and John Hutchinson.

  13. N.... J....

I wish someone uploads a video of them on stage with dancing and mime all all....

  14. C.... C....

His 👧 at the time Heromine and hutch

  15. E.... G....

    rip ziggy

  16. H.... M....

David seems to have used part of the melody in Savior Machine. It's very similar.

    H.... M....

    He did.

    H.... M....

Exactly right - he's very good at recycling riffs!

    H.... M....

    Good ear

  17. A.... ....

Prediction for 2016: Lightly psychedelic skiffle-influenced folk trios are comin BACK IN STYLE!

    A.... ....

+Anarcho McTasteeFreeze I agree, but please let's keep this a secret, I love this stuff! ;-)

    A.... ....

    Where they at?

  18. G.... ....

    For those confused:
    1. The verses are sung by, in order, David, Hermione and John Hutchinson (everyone forgets about him?)
    2. This version is now available on the Deluxe Edition of the David Bowie (aka Love You Til Tuesday) album, which brings together all the Deram era songs/takes including the first BBC session.  (But it doesn’t have the film version of Space Oddity – so you cant throw out your Deram Anthology yet!)
Here we have: some great chord changes, one great riff, and utterly hopeless lyrics.  No wonder it was reconstructed - re-emerging in the unassailably brilliant Savior Machine.  But the chord-pattern never reappeared - whoops.

    G.... ....

that really nice change at the end of the verse only really works when David's singing though eh? :). The last guy does okay, but the girl doesn't make it work at all.

    G.... ....

Despite him being my Dad, I often forget about John Hutchinson too ;)

    G.... ....

Hutch's voice and look was close to Bowie's; I think people sometimes get them mixed up

    G.... ....

It's interesting, because i heard this song on The Deram Anthology album, and that version was 2:04 long, it did not include Bowie's verse. Thanks to you now i can listen to the whole song.

    G.... ....

@Simon Simon But she looked good in that fshort ilm where they played this while sitting on pillows :)

  19. k.... ....

    Who's the lady singing??

    k.... ....

David's girlfriend at the time. Hermione Farthingale.

    k.... ....

    Ohh thanks!

    k.... ....

+John Cebollero Didn't he send her a letter?

    k.... ....

He wrote it and sung it, this we know.

    k.... ....

    Sounds like Yoko, eh?

  20. L.... G....

so pure. nothing like this nowadays! just garbage out there and women flaunting their bodies (aka myley cyrus, beyonce etc.)

    L.... G....

+Leigh G. like how David Bowie did during the 70s?

    L.... G....

Totally Leigh G. And then in the 80's Bowie wore spandex in the Labrynth, showing his famous weiner, and no one objected to his body. Well, perhaps some people did, but not in the reflexive and automatic way that people object to female bodies and their connection to performance.

Also, I hope the sarcasm in my first comment was evident.

    L.... G....

McTastee, I was referring to THAT video.

    L.... G....

Still, you shouldn't shame women for doing what men (such as the one featured in this video) do... It's honestly such a gross double standard :/

    L.... G....

Especially since women are pressured by the music industry to use their bodies sexually in a way that men aren't. And though Bowie isn't responsible for THAT, Bowie undeniably changed how the body could be viewed in rock music and western popular culture. He made it more sexualized.

  21. m.... ....

    Seriously awesome tune

  22. b.... ....

The Deram anthology version has a shorter version with Hermione singing first. This is better as David sings an extra first verse, thankyou. Both are good though

  23. b.... ....

    Thanks, this is good

  24. D.... ....

    The Saviour Machine!

    D.... ....

    spot on

  25. A.... A....

    WOW AMAZING.... :)

  26. p.... ....

Ah-ha! ..that melody @2.20 is used for the guitar solo on: "Saviour Machine" on "Man Who Sold the World" LP. [was wracking my brains]

  27. M.... ....

    sorry, should be "whiff"

  28. M.... ....

Yeah, finally a full version, thank much for that which of happy hippie times... :)

  29. J.... ....

    saviour machine..

  30. J.... C....

You're welcome. When I heard there was a full version of this song out there, I had to find it. It's off DAVID BOWIE - Love You Till Tuesday (CD 1992) I purchased on Ebay. I'm glad to share it with folks who can appreciate it as much as I do. :)

  31. J.... C....

    You're quite welcome. :)

  32. R.... ....

Great to have the full version, Thank you very much! I could listen to this for hours. One of the best Bowie tunes. I'm not kidding. Any chance I might get hold of this great song on a Vinyl record?

  33. T.... ....

Thanks a lot for this, from a long time Bowie fan.
