David Bowie - Aladdin Sane Lyrics

Watching him dash away,
swinging an old bouquet
- dead roses
Sake and strange divine Uh-h-h-uh-h-uh you'll make it
Passionate bright young things,
takes him away to war -
don't fake it
Saddening glissando strings
Uh-h-h-uh-h-uh - you'll make it

Who'll love Aladdin Sane
Battle cries and champagne just in time for sunrise
Who'll love Aladdin Sane

Motor sensational, Paris or maybe hell - I'm waiting
Clutches of sad remains
Waits for Aladdin Sane - you'll make it

Who'll love Aladdin Sane
Millions weep a fountain,
just in case of sunrise

Who'll love Aladdin Sane

We'll love Aladdin Sane
Love Aladdin Sane

Who'll love Aladdin Sane
Millions weep a fountain,
just in case of sunrise

Who'll love Aladdin Sane

We'll love Aladdin Sane
We'll love Aladdin Sane

David Bowie Aladdin Sane Comments

This, 'New York Dolls', 'Billion Dollar Babies', 'Electric Warrior', and 'For Your Pleasure' are the five greatest glam rock albums of the 1970s. Only one song in on side one and you knew you were in deep when that piano solo started to roll and either entranced or enraged listeners. There was no in-between with Garson's (in)famous 'free jazz' solo; you either 'got it' or you most certainly did NOT 'get it'. Bowie at his most provocative; 'if you can make it this far, then try THIS'...

I remember back in the super early 80s I left the cassette tape of this in my car on a hot day and it melted, causing the music to slow down and constantly have a "tick" sound, which made this song in particular seem extremely haunting, especially the piano solo.
It can be closely replicated by slowing the video to 0.75 and putting an off tempo metronome in the back.

The most passionate and exciting and dare I say relevant piano solo ever played in popular music. I daresay it's never been repeated exactly since. Fantastic creativity.

  20. t.... ....

Mike Garson owns this tune! It sounds like Bowie wrote it especially for Mike to freak out on!

Most solo singers wouldn't allow the people playing the instruments to play such a badass solo. Bowie is a good man for allowing that

  55. s.... ....

My first Bowie album, and though my faves are Low and Diamond Dogs, this album was superb and this song might be the one I would choose that epitomizes what Bowie stood for best.

  56. 2.... a....

The coolest Bowie's name in my opinion.

  57. L.... F....

I just cannot understand why everyone praises the piano solo, in my opinion it ruins the whole track and the atmosphere that has been created until that point

    L.... F....

You can say that the piano solo here is describing a man that is driven by his own insanity, hence why the some part of it sounds very weird or maybe "off key"

    L.... F....

@Thanh Lâm Nguyễn but, still, it is off key, and does not fit with the rest of the song

    L.... F....

@Luigi Francomano Hey, it's your opinion so i respect that. But from my point of view, the "off key" of the piano solo helps describing Aladdin Sane as a character. So, that's what i got. I got nothing more to say.

  58. G.... B....

Mike Garson should have a writing credit on this tune, as his wigged-out piano section is intrinsic to the entire feel of the song!

  59. S.... H....

Born in 1960, this album was wonderful and meaningful to me from the time it was first out in April 1973, selling for £2.08 in the shops. An incredible classic work, with apocalyptic songs, amazing music and the addition of Mike Garson to the Spiders. And this title song - so excellent in every way.

I just discovered that this is a Grade 8 piece on Trinity College London syllabus which is funny as I jokingly suggested it to my son 2yrs ago for his school music exam. He didn't use it as it wouldn't be appreciated unless it was played perfectly and that it might be too radical for a school exam. I wonder if I can encourage him to learn it now.

  67. t.... ....

piano solo references both Rhapsody in Blue followed quickly by Tequila by the Champs. Pretty great.

  68. B.... ....

I just realised that the singer emoji (👨‍🎤) literally has Bowie’s same face paint!

  69. M.... A....

  84. R.... V....

I LOVE Aladdin Sane. Haunted Chords n Melody. YeaYeaYea. Right.

  85. a.... ....

I slept on the streets for three days to get tickets for Earls Court. It was an absolute disaster. Nothing but feedback. At one point they had to stop the show because the PA was about to fall into the crowd and kill the audience. It was declared in Melody Maker that it's "not possible to get a good sound in a stadium'. Then Pink Floyd did Wembley with quintrophonic sound and proved everybody wrong. Crystal Clear. The next time I saw bowie was at Wembley on the Station to Station tour. What a difference! He'd been to America and figured out how to get a sound. By the time he came back to the UK, music had been so far dumbed down by the fascists ( Sid Vicious, who couldn't play at all, was voted Best Bass Player, beating Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke ) that we'd got used to diabolical sub-punk bands like Generation X or the Damned. I myself was in a sub-Punk band ( Essential Logic ). Everyone was. It was like aliens had landed from outer space that could 'actually play' musical instruments. They floodlit the audience, not the band and I climbed onstage and was sitting with my back to Bowie, leaning against his monitor. Five Thousand people dancing to Golden Years and EVERYONE was smiling. Best show ever!!

    This

    Is not Ziggy Stardust 👩‍🎤

Love ya, Mike, and David so much ❤️

  87. C.... F....

The more I hear this song the more I think this was his creative peak. Some other tracks on the album are kind of weak but this one is its own little world.

Garson did that solo as a studio demo, trying out different styles before this one and Bowie said that what he's just played was going straight to the album. I remain awed, after 45 years.

  88. D.... S....

The great Mike Garson on piano.

  89. D.... S....

OOOOH Aladdin sane, what a great and Haunting song. love Bowie been a huge fan since 1972 and still today. These songs will always be my classics

  92. g.... ....

    We love Aladdin Saaaane!

  93. M.... ....

Bowie could have cashed in on ziggy for more sales but had the good artistic sense to risk this worthy cabaret instead. There is always a danger of overplaying one's hand. When he was ready to face Major Tom again, it was a decade later, and no one could accuse him of being a one hit wonder-- not even himself. He did forget his own wisdom later and admitted that Tonight was an artistic mistake to quickly cash in on Let's Dance. It was a creative departure from his timeline that he would never quite recover from. Although he could still create enjoyable music, maybe even hits, his knife would no longer cut the silk scarfs after year 1984. The song 1984 was a different story, created near his peak, with awesome power to spare.

  94. F.... !....

Everyone raves about Mike Garson's piano on this song, but it would be as annoying as hell without the rectilinear rock rhythm section giving it structure.

  95. s.... c....

i came here to get rid of ear worm

I would say how amazing the piano is but I think a couple of people beat me to it.

  99. M.... ....

His talent for music is just incredible, I'm blown away by this song.. when Listening to Lazarus, there some interesting similarities to Aladdin Sane in the end
