David Allan Coe - Crazy Mary Lyrics
In the lamplight burning low AND
Dimly through enchanted woods
She rocks beside the fire that never was lit
And as we ran on by
Pretending to be frightened
Crazy Mary from LONDONDERRY
Lives next door to the cemetery
How many lovers have you buried
We would shout, running scared
ACROSS the green and golden paths
That LED us home, away from Crazy Mary
She would never answer us
JUST SMILE through the window softly
That in the dark of night
She cursed us soundly, casting spells
And such to turn us into donkeys
So they went the summner years
Each one more fleeting than the last one
Rushing down the green and golden paths
And soon the woods were not enchanted anymore
For we we had grown and we'd forgotten crazy mary
So it comes that older now
We stand upon this windswept moor
The lonely STONE before us
Testifies that Crazy Mary ROCKS AND SMILES and dreams
HeR dreams somewhere
But not where little kids can follow after
And on the stone, these words, dear friend
Please write me down as one who loved
The raven-haired and laughing lads
That swore that they would marry me
BUT soon their sons came running by
And here I lie, forgotten, Crazy Mary.
In the lamplight burning low and dimly
Thru enchanted woods we think
About the sins that we commit along
The green and goden paths of gowing up
We light the fire and say a prayer for crazy mary

If I ever go to Ireland I'm going to London Derry
You don't have to go that far, Londonderry is a small town in southern Ohio.
I will play this at my mother's funeral, her name is Mary, she's bat shit crazy!
I guess not all of DAC's songs are about murdering hippies in cold blood.
i hope you have heard some more of his songs now, and changed your mind :)

@deerhunter1029p
You're def not alone, deerhunter; it's a v powerful song.
Many of us did some stupid, sometimes really nasty, things as kids, that we'd never do as adults -- & would take back in a heartbeat, if only we could.
Of course, we can't -- & sometimes it'd do more harm than good even 2 apologize (or it's impossible 4 one reason or another, as w/ Crazy Mary).
Best we can do then is try 2 raise our own kids so that they don't mess up as much, or as badly, as we might have.
this song is rather sad. anyone else feel bad for crazy mary? i do not believe i could be so cruel to a old woman no matter how crazy.
God this is such a good song. This whole album is great.
This song haunts me from my youth. My dad played this record alot when I was a young child. Great lyrics, great song.
Great song!
One of songwriter Michael Peter Smith's underrated gems.
