Dave Matthews Band - What Would You Say Lyrics
Up and down the puppies' hair
Fleas and ticks jump everywhere
'Cause of original sin
Down the hill fell Jack and Jill
And you came tumbling after
Rip away the tears
Drink a hope to happy years
And you may find
A lifetime's passed you by
What would you say
Don't drop the big one
If you a monkey on a string
Don't cut my lifeline
Don't bite the mailman
What would you say
I was there when the bear
Ate his head, thought it was a candy
Everyone goes in the end
Knock knock on the door
Who's it for? There's nobody in here
Look in the mirror, my friend
I don't understand at best
And cannot speak for all the rest
In the morning rise
A lifetime's passed me by
What would you say?
Don't drop the big one
If you a monkey on a string
Don't cut my lifeline
If you a doggie on a chain
Don't bite the mailman
What would you say?
Every dog has its day
Every day has its way
Of being forgotten
Mom, it's my birthday
What would you say?
And what could you say?
What would you say?
I was there when the bear
Ate his head, thought it was a candy
Everyone goes in the end
Knock knock on the door
Who's it for? There's nobody in here
Look in the mirror, my friend
I don't understand at best
And cannot speak for all the rest
In the morning rise
A lifetime's passed me by
What would you say?

Dave Matthews Band What Would You Say Comments
...and to think of all the years I wasted on Hootie and the Blowfish?
I loved how John Popper from Blues Traveler was featured in this song. He's an amazing harmonica player.
This f-ing tune rocks! One of my favorites for sure!
I'm British...is it "a religious sin"! I do adore this band x ...irony..'look in the mirror,
This song right here started a 25 year obsession with this band...
Does anybody know what any Dave Matthews song is actually about? They're all just like a bunch of random words strung together.
Bravo ⚘
I remember being 5 in 1999, playing Backyard Baseball on our family's Compaq Windows 98 computer. My mom was cooking dinner and my dad was studying for medical school and listening to this album. I thought Dave Matthews and Phish were so cool because they were "Dad's music".
A lot of time has passed, and I completely dismissed DMB. Now I'm back to finally say, 20 years later, I totally get it. The lyrics, the Musicianship, the sheer catchiness... I wonder what my future kids will look back on the same way I can look back on DMB
Iv heard this on the radio and always loved it
Never knew much about the band
Lead Singer is great just saw him on Jimmy Kimmel
One of the Worst Songs with one of the worst so called singers ever! Written in about 5 minutes and it sounds like it! Incredibly annoying video too! Dave Mathews doesn’t sing! He speaks his lyrics out and his songs sound like half baked unfinished jams or something. He’s terrible and those weird faces he makes while he speaks his songs are hideous! He’s the most overrated music star ever!
Him and John Mayer should hold a weird face making contest to see who can contort their face the best while they speak their lyrics out. But Mayer can at least play the guitar well.
DMB are one of the most overrated horrible groups ever! I’m glad I don’t own a single cd 💿 of theirs. I don’t allow trash 🗑 in the house.
I wanna eat ur hole
Heard this song for the first time today.
What'd you think?
Classic Reddit Stories It was in my head for three days
This video is so 90s it's ridiculous
This is something. $20 going once, going twice
Was acid a requirement for music video makers back in the day? Because they were trippin crazy when they made this shit.
This is one of the best things ever written xD
Freemason checkerboard pattern?
Dave Matthews music videos + Harvey Danger's Flagpole sitter are QUINTESSENTIAL late 90's vibes... Mostly just saying that because that was my Dad's soundtrack during that time and I was 6
Thank you.
Timeless jam always n forever.
I’ve come to the realization that “every dog has its day, every day has its way of being forgotten” is such an awesome BURN if you use it in the right context.
You got that right buddy!!!..use it!!!
Under the table and dreaming was DMB’s most beautiful album. So raw, so pretty.
Mom it’s my birthday what would you say??
Nobody realized we got the last decade of truly talented musicians.
that john popper harmonica solo though
Dave Matthews is the Tom Hanks of music, change my mind!
That doesn't make any sense
He looks like Tom Hanks
People really bought into this crap huh??? Lol
you must be 9 years old bc this shit rocks
That Jon popper harmonica dayum haha I got his licks on the h doe eh eh eh

Timeless song that really never ages. Like RCHP “Under The Bridge”. True story. Change my mind

I like CB a lot. BUT..... Dennis Chambers
Such Peter Gabriel vibes. Don't believe me? Watch Steam, Big Time, and Sledgehammer and thank me later.
Wish Dave would play Charlottesville,VA the old stomping grounds
Just did in December.
Dam that bass sound is a monster and I love it!!!!!!!!!!
PBS Spacetime and The Science Asylum.

1st grade
This song never gets old! I love it such a funky bop!
There is a live version of this song the band did somewhere back in the day that is a WAY slower version. I had it on minidisk (yeah, that old) & have not been able to find it anywhere. Really hope I find it again some day because I think it was one of the best performances of this song.
That smelly Duck ing Rat but he says the stove must stay its hell I say mr clean dznt care its so unfare my beautiful brother just said hey gotta go oK
wow, the first time I listened to this song I was only 17 years old in 1995 and was finishing high school, now I'm 40 in 2019. damn the time went by very fast.
Holy shit i remember watching this when I was a little girl. My mom had the DVD disc of all the music videos from like 1994-2001. This brings back memories
And now you realize how awesome your Mom is.....go to her..embrace her....put on Dave Matthews and give her a peck on the cheek....sway with her....let her know.... you now understand "the Dave"....
That harmonica is just amazing. The 90s were something special especially 1994. I was lucky to be a kid at the time but I wish I was a lot older back then.
John Popper
Dat White audience.
Dave is beautiful!
Pleas an tees evrayyywhereeeee
I thought it was ticks and fleas
My history with this band started from this song, exactly 9 years ago. Still love'em!
Empire City from Sonic Unleashed feels
Such a funky, carefree groove.
I like DMB's music and everuthing but I just can't help but wonder if he and Billie Joe Armstrong grew up on the same island or something. Their speech is just so fucking weird and unidentifiable.
That sax solo was freaking beautiful!!!!!
Good song.
so who did the harmonica solo??
Aaron Levine John Popper Blues Traveler
I came here because of my Ap Human Geo class
Mandy Hur sammmeeee
Happy Anniversary Under the Table and Dreaming.
The entire album was a mother fucking masterpiece of nostalgia
Man, I’ll be the hater in the room. So what would I say? Your lame ass acoustic guitar playing and non sense lyrics couldn’t make this song anymore bland. That’s what I’d say. Also any song that features a harmonica solo and an uninspired sax solo over a guitar solo when your band is named after the guitar player is weak as fuck. That’s why Dave plays an acoustic bc he just couldn’t quite hang with the big boys who play electric. But I guess I’m not sophisticated enough to understand the shear majesty of such a transcendent visionary. I apologize for my ignorance
Wow takes me back to 1994.....
Saw them at Summerfest in June...Awesome show!
The 90's were so fucking awesome.
Goddamn right
Yupperz
Indeed, then we went into the world of "hash".......as in "re"...and today? When I turn on a so-called "Pop" or "Popular" station, I literally forget periods of time(I'm just INTO THAT MUSIC WOW!!!!!!)....it's loaded with subliminals(why else would I be buying so much,...)....... freaking songs all sound the same because guess what? Only two dudes write all of that dungurianuselope....or that's what the Internet God's told me, and if it came from them, then it has to be TRUE!!!
Except for Dave Matthews
Awesome video
and a lifetime passes by good songwriting
Great song from a very talented band!
Welcome to the 90's version of Peter Gabriel
and that's literally it.
Do you think they know who he is lmao
god damn! 2018 still slappin !
Still remember this video because of the boob bounce at 2:53.
1skcusebutuoy1 LOL one hell of a boob bounce LOL
My birthday is on June 27th so this song was number one three days before my 14th Birthday.
Love the LeRoi solo.
Ahhh the good ol days.
One of the few Dave songs that I prefer the studio version to over the live version. All about Mr. Popper!
Thanks Matt Sloan of BlameSocietyFilms.
The violin in the break is the best relaxing sound. Luv this song.
sonia polycarpe Dancing Nancies Boyd really lights it up
Its a song bout Original Sin. Heh, one could much easier pull that off in 90s', because it was still the zodiacal Age of Pisces. Not yet Aquarius.
That's stupid like any of that matters is a bunch of hippy dippy bs
My all time fav DMB song & I really luv that bridge where the band jams with John Popper.
i love american music
ufo fan what'd would you say???
Dam dam I’m tripping on this music I forgotten how good
It's been years since I've seen the video to this. I've looked everywhere for it.
Coolest guitar riff EVER!!!
Gee is John popper ever wicked on the harmonica.
Tim Stoddart 90’s alternative FTW !!!
Holy shit, I never knew this. Likewise, flea and dave navarro play on jagged little pill!
This is my favorite punk rock song.
pointlessfailure not punk, more funk or jazz rock
Officially they are considered Alternative Rock. But their style definitely dips into Jazz.
Rock it rock it Good
great tune
Hmmm...never knew this video version was slightly longer than the LP/Album version.. (3:42- 4:06) especially noted by the longer Sax solo!! Cool stuff
bap. bap. bap. :-)
Mom, it's my b'day...
16 years old and was seeing this video and DMB for the first time on Mtv (back when they played amazing music and not shows about knocked up teenagers). I was blown away by their sound, and I still can't stop listening to them now.
I like this song, but the only ones I've heard of by then is big whiskey and the groogrux clan. I like that album a lot more an this. The drums are mic new innovative not to mention everything else
Don't bite the mailman
If you a doggie on a chain

I don't know if somebody's already said this, but Peter Gabriel.
