Dave Mason - The Lonely One Lyrics
There've been moments of despair
There've been times I could not care
I was the lonely one
Then you showed myself to me
And I found I needn't be
Running in the wilderness and dreaming in the sun
Cryin' to the sky at night for God's eternal son
Through the truth and through the lies
There is really no disguise
To hide the lonely ones
You can find them on a card
Being matched with other hearts
The really lonely ones
Running in the wilderness and dreaming in the sun
And cryin' to the sky at night for God's eternal son
Inside your rooms, behind your wall
I see your face
You know I hear your call
Is this some madness that's been left unchecked
Or will there always be just promises?
Running in the wilderness and dreaming in the sun
And cryin' to the sky at night for God's eternal son
There are men that hold the key
To set everybody free
But they are lonely ones
And if the day should come
When they all can work as one
There'll be a destiny
Yes, I know
Running in the wilderness and dreaming in the sun
Cryin' to the sky at night for God's eternal son
Yeah, yeah...

Dave Mason The Lonely One Comments
Back in the day, I bought this album just for this song - great. I knew it was Stevie on harmonica, but just learned that Leon's on piano. It's not just because this is what I grew up with, the 70s had the best music... I sense the emotion had something with coming out of the war, but that doesn't account for the incredibly talented musicians.
I dont know why he did not to become more well known than he is.
Beautiful song, my friends!
I go see Dave every time he comes near Dallas. I've seen him 4 times in the last 5 years. and he always signs stuff after the show. a real nice guy. a rock God IMHO
Love the Leslie

This is the first song I learned to play fingerpicking guitar. Played the vinyl over and over to get it just right. I got to see him in Chicago a few years later. Wow. He really speaks. Oh, I still have that vinyl too!
Legendary musician, guitar master, incredible songwriter and a fine singer
I played this album to DEATH as a teen!
Typo? Leon Russell is not on this song.

In the first few seconds, I thought this was a cover of Blind Faith's Can't Find My Way Home.
Such beautifully put together lyrics and music. One of of the songs of Dave Mason that was never on my radar. Now it is. Thanks.
Beautiful track
Why didn't we hear Dave on FM radio very often in the 80s?
Great lyrics, fantastic music and perfect atmosphere!
Amazing! Thank you! Dave!
I had to say, for sure Dave Mason help by putting out his inspiration of words in his song writing and music, and with this one song of how he really puts his deep way of sharing on the topic of both brothers and sisters going though the hardship of we all sometimes feeling. And if you truly want to find a true understanding, try and see how first of all we not to even think to go on being fooled by the trillionaires continuing to raising prices for everything, to no end, and so we simple start to spiritually Love all as ourselves. And 1st if you say you do love our Creators families of creatures living in peace and not harmed then you no more support that everyday slaughter and butchering on Gods earth, and eat what the Good Shepherd- Prince of Peace eats, the fruits, grains, vegetable and nuts. Believe me it's not that hard to make the change to being a vegetarian, so pray everyday and I'll be always praying for all of you, Peace to all my Brothers and Sisters and Praise Our Creator God and His True Sacred Heart Jesus Christ who His Loving Father sent here to teach us how to be forgiven then healed to understand how to continue to follow in His Truth, Way and The Life in full faith. This all comes by being obedient to all the ten commandments and by praying for wisdom and strength our Father will deliver and guide us away from the past sins and temptations, to go forth and with The Holy Spirit you can " freely" share to your brothers and sisters Gods Will for Peace on earth and of The New Earth and New Kingdom in Heaven. Praise Yahwee.
great song . so under rated. met him a few years ago. still listen to his albums.
Still applies; maybe more than ever, I would say...
Thank you so much for sharing this AND sharing the most important lyric right up front! I dedicated my book to "The Lonely Ones" and quoted this from this song... Excellent!
This is an almost holy song for me. I've being searching it high and low, for years, and now I found it. How beautiful is this tune? How great is Dave Mason, these days? Who is better than him, today? I love this man and his music. I always will. A simple harmony like this became a trip back to my past (I like to pick up my acoustic guitar, and play along with them. It's wonderful). Thanks, Dave. Thanks,

The Rodney Dangerfield of rock music folk razz etc
Happy 72nd birthday, Dave!
One of the very first three albums that I bought and holds the memories of my early life. Classic!
One of the most beautiful songs ever. Have the vinyl, lol.
I didn't love Jazz, and '40's swing 'til much later in life... If folks don't love music, and look beyond streaming mediocrity-no views.
Wonderful song with Stevie Wonder adding his cry with a great harmonica throughout. Just great!
Oh Dave Mason!!!!!!!!
He's still out there touring; saw him about two years ago and he's still got the riffs and the pipes! Great storytelling between songs, too. If you get a chance to listen to his updated, jazzy version of "Low Spark..." DO IT.
One of my all time favorite concerts and albums.
Loved Dave Mason's music. He had some top notch talent with him on this song. Stevie Wonder and Leon Russell.
Mark Jordon is credited with keyboards - not Leon, but who knows.
@Dan Hunt You are correct. Leon Russell did not play on this album.
@Kurtis Ploehn It's weird because Discogs is usually a reliable source and they credit Leon, which was where I went to find out who was playing. Another site has a list of musicians on this and it mentions Mark Jordon. Norma Jean Bell is listed as playing horn although she is known as a sax player. She was incredibly talented, use to see her live, at this bar, in Detroit.

I've seen him many times. Supreme talent. Still has the pipes
Me too.. From the 70s right to present day. If he stayed with Traffic we likely never would have had all this great stuff.
COOL, COOL,COOL !!!
Stevie Wonder and Leon Russel
I got to see Leon in a bar in Louisville in '04 or '05, maybe '03... :-) Will have to check my stub...He was so close, I could almost reach out and touch him...AND forgot to take my camera....DAMN!...Don't think I'll ever get past that one...His daughter, Tina Rose did a song...and she was awesome!...Just sayin'...Oh, and tickets were only $15.00...
I saw Leon twice ion the last year of his life and was able to get close and take pictures. stood outside his bus in the rain to get his autograph
one of the best albums ever
Part of my sacred music collection
Man who has and is still journeying on to asking in prayer why he feels the loneliness and wonders why many poor and uneducated people are the one reason he believes he must put out these true heart spiritual words for all to come to take in to really understand that the billionaires continuing cost of living is no more to gamble with having affairs or making that too easy of a big mistake with your sisters hey brothers.Yea it's too too many childhood diseases. not to mention the numerus grownups problems.(financially) etc' God Bless the lonely ones
Yea and Traffic dumped him for wanting to write good music ,that they didn't like, they don't know what they had, awesome musician, one of my favorites, thanks Dave, God bless you friend...
the best song on a wonderful album
How could I have ever forgotten you, Dave Mason? But hearing this again, it's like you never left! This song still draws tears, but when I was younger I didn't know why. Brillant!
love you Save Mason.
Stevie Wonder's C-chord harp is tops.

One of the best songs of that era. Brilliant and beautiful.
such a great song! stevie wonder on the harmonica. (under the radar)
Oh no... Not to me! That chromatic harp is unmistably Stevie's! Signature... Listen to "Fingertips".
Smooth as a 70’s leisure suit.
I have several of his records, what a great artist.
I cannot believe the low number of views Dave Mason's music receives. He is such a great talent. There are a lot of people missing out on some exceptional music. The music and the lyrics are incredible. It sure takes me back to the great times of my youth. Vivid memories of carefree times with the best friends I will ever have in my lifetime. In a matter of seconds, the music takes you back 35 years. I think music is the only thing that has the ability to do that. It never ceases to amaze me.
I could not agree with you more!
@Mind Bender Yes, Dave Mason is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, IMHO. He was one of my most important guides in my teenage years/young twenties, and still is, with both his newer songs and his old originals. This guy was way ahead of his time, and I thank God for sending Beloved Dave to us.
Well in his time his music received much airplay...your comment says it all !
This was music older brother and parents music played and always I have love Daves music... alone together is one of the first albums I turn youngsters in search of great music of this era onto
Who's counting?Its not a competition,its art.
Back again ...this is so nice, had to listen to it twice....
Peace
Thank you for the Great post.
This is my 4th time listening to it with the head phones on beautiful.
May those who listen remember those good times when music like this affected your heart & soul.
Peace 2 ya
A wonderful gem finally found. I have looking for this song for a long time. As a harp' player I had a feeling that it was Stevie Wonder on the Harp.
Dave's singing & the lyrics are just right, I remember this from the 70's. I remember listening to this on FM at night looking at the entire Manhattan skyline from the 19th floor of my home stars clear on that winter night.
I never wanted this song to end. Truly a treasure to find it again.
1973 senior in H.S. interesting times 4 me.
I can't believe how much mediocre music gets put on a pedestal, yet then there are rare jewels like this song.
Wonderful old tune with Stevie. Amazed that it was still played on a regular radio station. A great cross-over. Which was and still should be the scene in these days.
"Through the truth and through the lies
There is really no disguise
To hide the lonely ones"
"Running in the wilderness
and dreaming in the sun
and crying to the sky at night
for God's eternal son"
A really memorable Dave song among so many others...wow, so much time gone by.
Hauntingly beautiful! He was definitely underrated. Wonderful memories.
of all his great songs, this is my favorite...so many of us sitting alone as teenagers so long ago were sitting there listening..we were the lonely ones...but we found our way..this song was such a great encouragement to us lonely ones. And is still beautiful...but we still are working on the problem as all working as one.
You took the words right out of my mouth, amigo. God bless you, as well.
i think he lives in So Cal...i saw him in late Nov 2012 after a bears v 49er game in Oakland at Yoshi's. he still plays
LAS MEJORES ROLAS SON COMO LAS PERLAS (no son para los marranos) POR ESO CUANDO MUCHO TIENEN 5000 VISITAS...GRACIAS AL QUE SUBIO ESTA CANCION DIOS LO BENDIGA.
Great song Gus, thanks for sending me this.
One of the best (and underrated singer-songwriters of the 70's) U can say I'm a big time Dave Mason fan, Thx for the upload
Oh wow! I love this song. Been a long time. Funny how the words just flow out of my mind and mouth. And Stevie Wonder! Love you Dave, for a long time.
To rediscover Dave is so amazing and the music is so pure and beautiful. I love his music. What a talent ! Where are you?
I love the spiritual side to this song. My very favorite Dave Mason song. Thanks to whoever posted it.
God Bless
