Dave Mason - Sad And Deep As You Lyrics

Lips that are warm could be
Lips that speak too soon
Lips that tell a story
As sad and deep as you

Smile that's warm as summer sun
Smile that gets you through
Smile that tells a story
As sad and deep as you

The eyes that are the windows
The eyes that are the view
The eyes that tell a story
As sad and deep as you

The tears that are unspoken words
The tears that are the truth
The tears that tell a story
As sad and deep as you

    simply beautiful...

  7. S.... M....

This is Dave’s masterpiece album. I have played these songs from Alone Together since 1970. DM is one of the unsung talents of the 1960s, with Traffic, Delaney and Bonnie, Jimi, and others. Still puts on a great show today.

  8. D.... H....

A real beauty... Leon Russell on keys...

    D.... H....

    Nope. It's me, John Simon

  9. I.... H....

    Beautiful

I think it's "Eyes that are the view."

  12. T.... ....

Excellent! I had first heard this song from Gov't Mule, didnt know that Traffic had also covered it.

    T.... ....

Covered it..... no, Traffic was first. I believe Dave Mason wrote it back in 1971.

  13. N.... D....

    hermosa cancion!!!

  14. J.... K....

Who are these three tasteless assholes who didn't like this???!!

  15. C.... B....

This is odd. It says Leon Russell and John Simon on the credits for this song. Not the lp but the song. Were there 2 pianos on this? I have read in several different places that Leon played on this song only.

    C.... B....

It's John Simon. ANd I can say that as a fact cuz I remember the session. Glad you like it. John Simon

    C.... B....

Well, thank you John. I played along to this album on my piano many times 45 years ago.

    C.... B....

    Nope, that's me. John Simon

    C.... B....

Incidentally, I just wrote a book, Check it out:“TRUTH, LIES & HEARSAY: A Memoir Of A Musical Life In And Out Of Rock And Roll”. Thanks for the compliment! John Simon

    C.... B....

@john simonmusicetc The one and only John Simon? The John Simon that produced the Band's first two albums? Excellent piano on this track sir!! I'm going to look for your book and order a copy.

  16. m.... r....

    great song indeed

  17. K.... A....

David i have love his music since i was 16 teen i am 62

    K.... A....

@freeholdnative For me I loved his music from when I was 13 (in 1967), which was way back in the Traffic days. I saw them on TV playing "Hole In My Shoe" and thought to myself, what a brilliant tune. Dave Mason wrote it.

  18. M.... ....

Sad and Deep As You, rings true.

  19. s.... ....

Rest in Peace Leon Russell. Play on.

    s.... ....

According to Wikipedia, Leon is playing the piano on this song &
    others on the album....

    s.... ....

Wikipedia also credits John Simon with keyboards.
I have known them both and they're playing styles well. This track is unmistakably John Simon on piano.
    RIP LR

    s.... ....

Why didn't John Simon get credit on the album cover then?

    s.... ....

John Simon is credited with keyboards, along with Leon Russell and Don Preston.

    s.... ....

    he does

  20. r.... ....

Never listened to more than a couple of his songs ,which I liked, but glad I put this on. Thanks.

  21. p.... m....

this is such a lovely song.

  22. g.... ....

Some of the most beautiful piano fills ever recorded. I played this album probably more than any other album that came out that year, and it has remained in my personal Top Ten, even after all this time.

    g.... ....

@Phil Sheridan Nope. That's me. Incidentally, I just wrote a book, Check it out:“TRUTH, LIES & HEARSAY: A Memoir Of A Musical Life In And Out Of Rock And Roll”. Thanks for the compliment! John Simon

    g.... ....

@SnehanBorn Incidentally, I just wrote a book, Check it out:“TRUTH, LIES & HEARSAY: A Memoir Of A Musical Life In And Out Of Rock And Roll”. Thanks for the compliment! John Simon

    g.... ....

@john simonmusicetc John, you are most welcome! I will be sure to check the book out. I am a big fan of your work on so so many albums..Yes, on actual vinyl! Best Regards!

  23. w.... t....

  24. e.... ....

Una canción que amo realmente. Muchas gracias.

  25. T.... D....

Classic tune from an Incredible Album, Superb piano from Mr.Simon and Wonderful Lyrics from Dave !!  The album packaging was pretty awesome for the day !

    T.... D....

+TIM Dooley indeed, john Simon's unmistakeable melodic stylings on piano.....i thought i was the only one who knew ;)

    T.... D....

    +TIM Dooley
I thought Leon Russell played piano on this track.

    T.... D....

+Max Gomez-Barris ....not on this track, Max. This is John Simon's piano work

  26. T.... ....

Such a beautiful song but something about it makes me want to weep. Has something to do with my adolescence as the first time I heard this I thought I was in love....

    T.... ....

    well said.....thanks

    T.... ....

Beautiful song, makes me weep every time I hear it. Music does that to me, no shame it that. Let the tears flow, they feel good.

  27. H.... S....

This is one of the finest songs from one of the best rock albums (Alone Together) of all time. Every song is perfect!

    H.... S....

Amen, and amen. I had this on tape in a VW van that was the soundtrack for exploring Mendocino in the early 70's. Lost youth, found music! So it goes.

    H.... S....

I had the LP, it was so cool. Like someone threw it on a spin wheel with paint tossed on. Very cosmic, loved to watch the record turn. Too bad not many know of him. I loved his voice, lyrics, & melody's.

  28. P.... I....

My copy of this album is tie dyed vinal.Very rare !
One of my favorate albums.. Every song great !!!!

    P.... I....

So is mine, the foldout cover that turns into a topcoat.

  29. M.... D....

what a great song, done so well with excellent instruments and vocals.  I don't hear anything today like this!

    M.... D....

    Nor will you..................Sadly

    M.... D....

    Agree! Rap is crap!

  30. M.... P....

Thank you for posting, Great song, always loved it.

  31. L.... M....

his Certified LIVE LP ranks right up with this well!

  32. e.... ....

I still have it on vinyl, but no vinyl playing device.

  33. R.... M....

love it!!! where'd the music go? We're lucky to have these old recordings, given the crap available today...Lady GaGa?

  34. S.... H....

Been looking for this for years!

  35. T.... Z....

    great cd

  36. G.... B....

I still listen to the vinyl, love it, no better sound.

  37. t.... ....

Thank you..."smile that tells the story...

  38. d.... ....

@animascat You may have been hallucinating, but you are correct about the album. It was well known for its marble color and pop-up cover when you opened it.

  39. 1.... ....

    @PornStarfishScooter .....I understand it to represent a Sunset!- right....^/^

  40. s.... ....

Have the first John Simon album on reel to reel .... Sounds good ... Thanks .....

  41. a.... ....

great album and really welcome at the time.. seem to remember that the album cover was a bit different. some kinda pop out or pop up art stuff. at that time, could've easily been hallucinating..

  42. R.... M....

back when there was really music. what the hell happened?

  43. M.... W....

had it ... years ago .. wore it out ....

  44. 1.... ....

I still have this LP...the first batch was a "swirly" mix of various colors in making the acetate material...after that you could only get the LP in regular black...anybody know what I'm talking about? If you do, you have a collectible Dave Mason LP! woo hoo ^/^

    1.... ....

    I've got one too!

    1.... ....

Mine is like that too. it's called marble vinyl. was very cool as it resembled the rocks on the cover a little bit.

    1.... ....

Yes , I still have mine as well. Dave said in an interview that no two records were the same & they did the record that way cause it was the only way they could get the radio DJs to play the whole record as they couldn't find the separate tracks . The interview is on YT.

  45. J.... P....

little known but one of my favorites back in the day... Thanks, Steve.

  46. d.... ....

This record was one of 1970's Top Albums...Great songwriting, excellent vocals, & great musicians...Every track was excellent, a Masterpiece...but was largely overshadowed by the Beatles, & their break-up...The beginnings of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, & other heavy rock acts...

  47. G.... c....

    @hemet92544
Tons of it, recommended "it's Like you Never left", "Dave Mason" (yes like that) "Split Coconut" "Mariposa de Oro" and many others
    g : )

  48. G.... c....

A masterpiece "no doubt about it" :
    g : )

  49. K.... M....

    @pedicord89
I was at that concert at the Universal Ampitheater in 1976. That was a very special night, Dave and team we at the top of their game. We purchased the album shortly thereafter and have been enjoying it ever since. It's a hidden treasure.

  50. p.... ....

just bought Dave Mason "Certified Live" from ITUNES....the best....usually don't like live version but with this one....

  51. p.... ....

  53. l.... ....

YES, WE SHOULD SEND THEM ALL TO THE MOON !!!!!

  54. d.... ....

    still have the vinyl

  55. Y.... ....

I grew up with this shit. Classic vinyl that still stands . Best album Dave Mason ever made.

  56. o.... ....

@RadioReporter01 I'm impressed with your snuckery!

  57. C.... C....

This song was original on the live Traffic album "Welcome to the Canteen" Great live album...

  58. W.... ....

the Gov't Mule 12 min blues rock version is also great, very different but even more grievous

    W.... ....

WizardofFuzz I concur! Govt Mule is the ONLY band that does covers better than the original artist (in my opinion)

  59. l.... ....

    @RadioReporter01
    8 tracks will rise again!

  60. z.... ....

@RadioReporter01 That was the coolest Broadway musical of the Sixties by far. You were a witness to history. What the heck has happened to our US culture since then?

  61. z.... ....

    @belindaesq
Right you are! But too many folks gave in to the Establishment and material crap. Others went off to live in isolated places far from the bullcaca. Others ohdeed. And a lot never really were in control of their lives to begin with. With the rise of the neocons and resurgence of racism I eventually felt like such an outsider in my own country that I left, too. Never looked back. No regrets.

  62. z.... ....

@RadioReporter01 Too funny! Lost most of my 8-track collection and first player to the depths of the Caribbean off St. Croix in '72. Then lost the rest of my 8-tracks and new player in the Acapulco airport in '74. I used to love listening to Hair over and over the year it came out. 'Bout drove my mother crazy. Good morning starshine! But we're not old, just better! =)

  63. z.... ....

@Stumbler1able Sounds like you need to take a few hits of some good smoke and relax, dude. As Freewheelin' Franklin sez: "Dope'll get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no dope." To which I would add: But if you abuse it then you've only yourself to blame.

  64. z.... ....

@RadioReporter01 But do you still have the 8-track player? ;~)

  65. M.... L....

@belindesq, Everybody smoke dope. That will fix the problems of the world... NOT!

Dave Mason's music is timeless. My parents liked him.

  66. B.... R....

One of the best albums ever recorded!!! What happened to our generation? We should have done so much more by now. This whole gulf oil spill never would have happened if we would have gone green. We knew better and we let the military industrial complex keep their power. Shame on us. At least CA is about to legalize pot. That should have happened ages ago.

  67. r.... t....

    m-e-r-a-v-i-g-l-i-o-s-a canzone.Grazie.

  68. g.... h....

Love Dave Mason. So underrated. If anyone has "Relationships" to upload that would be great. Lost my album AND CD in the recent New England flood. March 2010.

  69. D.... L....

    a real classic

  70. l.... ....

Dave Mason was one of those artists who never got the recognition the quality of his music deserved. Alone Together and the self titled Dave Mason album were two of my favorite albums from the early 70s. Great music. I think his version of All Along the Watchtower is the greatest version of the song ever recorded, and I'm including Dylan and Hendrix.

  71. M.... ....

    man,this was a masterpiece record,i like it!

  72. G.... c....

Man hearing this one again for a long time it brings just chills up my spine, so damn beautiful.
    Thanks for uploading

  73. G.... H....

    and sadly beautiful...song for Megumi

  74. W.... M....

    who has it Live ?!!

  75. G.... H....

This song is the story of my love, dear Miss M......the 'smile' is yours, the 'eyes' with which you see so much, the calmness I love.."I love you"!

  76. m.... s....

Ah yes...the early 70's....If only I could remember what happened ;)

  77. 7.... ....

Check out the band he had with him on this album.
Plus he still tours alot, and sounds better than ever...Check them out.

  78. G.... H....

    For Miss M

  79. w.... ....

So many memories ... sad and deep as you

  80. L.... M....

i have yhe one on marbled vinyl

  81. G.... ....

Is your vinyl album the weird colored swirly one like mine, or is it regular black?

  82. a.... ....

Fond memories of Dave performing this one in concert at Bowling Green University in '76, with the immensely talented Mike Finnigan on keyboards.

  83. D.... ....

Think we should check the liner credits , I dont' recall J.Simon on this record and have two copies [could be wrong]By the way JIM CAPALDI co-wrote and wrote some tunes ,on this AS SANG AND PLAYED ,ALONG WITH A HOST OF GREAT OTHERS,too many to mention ....

    D.... ....

Yeah. It's John Simon on this cut. I should know cuz he is me! Glad you like it.

  84. S.... ....

Leon plays on a couple of the songs on this album, "Alone Together". Leon is great! I grew up in Tulsa and used to see him sometimes at local clubs, was also invited to his home studio and got to play on his big black grand piano once.

But this track is unmistakably John Simon's brilliant, plaintive piano embellishment.

    S.... ....

Yeah, Leon was a talented individual but that's me on this cut. I'm glad you like it. John Simon

    S.... ....

@john simonmusicetc Yes! The irrepressible magic of wunderkind, Mr. John Simon. Respect and much love from a long time fan, John

  85. S.... ....

yeah, I had that marbleized version. It also came with an album cover that unfolded into a wall hanging.
So many of the r&r legends had major solo offerings around this time. (Leon, Eric, Todd, Edgar, Johnny, Rod, etc.) Dave Mason's "Alone Together" is a classic!!!

  86. m.... ....

beautiful song. He's still great in concert.

  87. C.... U....

    an amazing version!!!!!I love it.

  88. S.... ....

That's my friend, John Simon (producer extraordinaire) on the haunting piano. This song has lifted me through many a trial in life. "A smile to get ya through." Its a healing soundtrack for a melancholic heart. Many thanks!

  89. a.... ....

    me too.
I haven't thought of him in many years

  90. l.... ....

Lilting piano keeps the song positive, while all the time being heavy beautiful.

  91. 3.... ....

brings me back to my freshmen year of college. love hearing it again after all these years

  92. I.... ....

The original LP had marbelized printing, truly unique-- just like the music.

  93. J.... A....

geez thanx for posting this audio, It certainly brings back memories *-)

  94. R.... H....

    great tune but no vid??
