Dave Clark Five, The - Over And Over Lyrics

Well, I went to a dance just the other night
Everybody there was stag
I said over and over and over again
This dance is gonna be a drag

I said over and over and over again
This dance is gonna be a drag
I said over and over and over again
This dance is gonna be a drag

All at once it happened
The prettiest in the world
I said a-won't you come over and a-talk to me
And be my girl

I said a-won't you come over and a-talk to me
And be my girl
I said a-won't you come over and a-talk to me
And be my girl

She said she was sorry
And I was a little bit late
She would a-wait and a-wait and a-wait and a-wait
For her steady date

She would a-wait and a-wait and a-wait and a-wait
For her steady date
She would a-wait and a-wait and a-wait and a-wait
For her steady date

    THE DAVE CLARK ROLL

  2. J.... W....

I remember hearing this when I was 5. Then the last time I heard this was about 5 years ago when my stepdad had this on one of his Dave Clark Five CD's playing it in his truck the one day.

  3. k.... c....

At 9 years old they were right in my wheelhouse!!!

  4. J.... ....

I remember this song from when I was little but this song creeped me out a little bit back then, the um parts freaked me out and it first heard it back in the mid 80's.

  12. T.... ....

First heard this on the Oldies Station when I was going to college in the mid-80's when I lived in Anchorage, Alaska. Enjoyed 80's music but I must have been an old soul or something. Was drawn to this music. Love the DC5.

  13. S.... E....

Power Pop! I still prefer Glad All Over, but this is damned good.

  14. j.... ....

Thank you bikerdude for posting this great song! I love it! <3 :)

  19. A.... K....

anyone can argue about anything regardless it's good music if it made you move or make your head bob that's all that matters

  20. S.... M....

I still love DC5 since I was a little kid..............they were amazing! So glad there is you tube. Can't find a cd anywhere.

    S.... M....

Can get it on CD ..but 165.00. Forget it

    S.... M....

Seish's mom., iwas little more than a year old when DC5 came over to the states.. but, they , manfred mann 7 the moody blues are my three favorite brit invasion bands.. sorry beatles!

    S.... M....

CD? There's a reason why they're not available. Many Alternatives including burning your own.

  21. T.... B....

"I went to a dance the other night and everyone there was dead." This song is about Dave Clark performing fellatio on corpses in a morgue.

    T.... B....

    You can't be serious, dude!

    T.... B....

I think he’s just implying that it sounds like dead, rather than there. (Hopefully) ;)
I love this version. Bobby Day’s version says “I went to a dance just the other night, everybody there went stag” meaning being at a social gathering without a partner.
I think the DC5 changed ‘stag’ to ‘there’ because stag is primarily a North American term.

    T.... B....

try to get stiff before they did

  22. J.... W....

It was originally done by Bobby Day in the 50s

    J.... W....

Jimmy Wright Jr I guess thats why it sounds more 50s than 60s

  23. h.... ....

in mid 60s  dc5 put the beatles to shame, then the beatles began changing thier music like the rolling stones  etc............

    h.... ....

hunkydude322 lol either you were a Beatles fan or a Dave Clark Five fan back in the day

    h.... ....

You must be joking. This is decent, but each Beatle wrote better songs in their sleep. Also, it is "their".

    h.... ....

Allright, Can you mention the DC5 member names?

    h.... ....

@Floyd Shipley that's right Beatles are te Beatles

  24. b.... ....

JimT - They knew the lyrics BUT being from England they didn't understand what going stag meant, so they changed the lyric.

  25. b.... ....

    Hell yes!

  26. U.... ....

This song is really just so-so.  IMO, the reason this song got released is because Barry McGuire had a bit hit earlier in the year with "Eve of Destruction."  Then a group called the Spokesman had small hit with "Dawn of Correction."  Both of these records used the phrase "Over&Over" repeatedly.  DC was in it for the money, and he certainly did collect.

    U.... ....

    @***** Agreed

    U.... ....

Sounds great to me... I could listen to it over and over again.

    U.... ....

@Upsiditus7 He is listed as the producer. He also got royalties from the records they sold. There might be an alternate take on Youtube.

    U.... ....

+Upsiditus7 DC was certainly in it for the money but Mike Smith gave the band just what they needed: Incredible Energy. I think this song is great.

    U.... ....

@matt helm It is great, but there's one thing I don't like about it.

  27. J.... F....

I was 13 yrs old when the DC5 invaded the USA and it was high energy and terribly
magical and interesting times. Every week something cool was happening, all original, non stop.

    J.... F....

Yes! Those were the days my friend...

  28. J.... M....

I heard this song on my TV in my stateroom the navigation channel on NCL breakaway

  29. C.... S....

    entered Cashbox November 6, 1965

  30. C.... S....

Your right! The Bobby Day version from August 1958 version says "Everybody went STAG.. I said over and over and over again, this dance is going to be a drag"

  31. c.... ....

Probably the one who prefers the original version from The Righteous Bros: /watch?v=oyuzjAw5Zf8
Or the one from Emile Ford & The Checkmates
    /watch?v=BQTY8AZ_ZO0
Or (my personal fav) Jackie Robinson
    /watch?v=ussOUea3M6k

    All are superior versions :)

  32. J.... T....

"Everybody there was there." The fact that they didn't even bother to learn the lyrics adds a certain piquancy. LOVE the DC5. (srsly.)

  33. x.... ....

born in 93. Parents born in the 50's. This music was "modern" to me growing up lol

  34. T.... B....

All right, who's the moron with the dislike of this song?!

  35. S.... R....

I love that harmonica solo at 1:06. :D

  36. d.... m....

60s and 70s are my favorite too and i was born in 92

    d.... m....

Im 8yrs older than you and I still listen to oldies

  37. B.... B....

Know where I can get a TRUE stereo mix of this song?

  38. R.... M....

Listening to this song over and over

    R.... M....

    Rat Mathers ... great idea...👍.

  39. J.... L....

Vic, that's an interesting fact about Bobby Graham and thanks for correcting me. Do you know why the DC5 had to use a session player instead of Dave Clark? Was Clark playing a different instrument? Etc....

  40. V.... S....

That's actually UK session player Bobby Graham on the drums.

  41. s.... ....

On this day in 1965 {November 14th} the Dave Clark Five performed "Over and Over" on the CBS-TV program The Ed Sullivan Show
One day earlier on Nov. 14th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; & on Dec. 25th it peaked at #1 {for 1 weeks} & spent 12 weeks on the Top 100
On Aug. 4th, 1958 two version entered the Top 100; Bobby Day's peaked at #41 & Thurston Harris' reached #96
Lead singer Mike Smith died on February 28th, 2008 at age 64
R.I.P. Mr. Smith, Mr. Day, Mr. Harris, & Mr. Sullivan

  42. D.... ....

great song, I actually thought their lone #1 hit was "Because", not this song

  43. m.... ....

A #1 song for The Dave Clark Five on Christmas Day, 1965. It was their only #1 hit in the US. It was the last #1 song of 1965. What will 1966 bring? We will see.

  44. J.... L....

This is actually a cover of a great 1959 Bobby Day song (and even though the record says it was written by R. Byrd -- that's Bobby Day's real name). Dave Clark 5 had great taste in covers because they did a respectable exciting cover of this song. Dave Clark's upfront drums on this track are marvelous.

  45. B.... D....

This is my favourite of all DC5 songs! Thank you for posting it!!!! I was just 8 years old when the Beatles, and DC5 came onto the scene here in Canada. My parents let me stay up late to watch the Beatles's debut on the Ed Sullivan show. But, DC5 were hitting the charts at the very same time. And so were the Stones. British Invasion!!! That was the beginning of the Generation Gap. No more Lawrence Welk or Mitch Miller for us kids!

  46. D.... ....

    That Snare Snaps !

    D.... ....

That makes the song, I think!

  47. L.... ....

  48. E.... C....

Yeah, and when anyone hears the WilliM Tell Overture, they say, "The Lone Ranger. Sad....
