Darwin Deez - All In The Wrist Lyrics

Wipe the knife and slice through another new head of iceberg
I serve more hors d’oeuvres to the trashcan than to any man where I work
Waste in this place is a terrible thing to mind, likewise time
And I’m sure stacking glasses in the back is a total waste of mine

But is it all just as small as it seems to be?
It’s obscene what the scenery costs when dreams are free

Sundays she makes dates with inmates and reads to each one from books
And when their fingers linger under big words they give her dumb looks
She believes in Stephen he’s been writing an exciting piece of prose
Though only weeks from his release and the police are patting down his clothes

But the long way is never the wrong way when it’s homeward
To be happy, yeah if you ask me, is only a matter of homework
And it’s all in the wrist
Care do not I you can words my twist
Cause it’s easy, so easy that you might miss

When I’m trying to forget that you exist
And everything I do seems useless
When everywhere I go is an uphill climb
Just wanna hear your voice one more time
Tell me you don’t miss me too now
I swear I’ll never figure you out
Why can’t I get the hang of this
If the truth fits on a floppy disk and it’s all in the wrist

Besides Alice this is my favourite song on Songs For Imaginative People.
But since English is not my mothertongue, I never understood the expression "to be all in the wrist".
Last autumn I talked to the guy after his gig, but due to that nights last beer I cant remember the meaning.
So I'm kindly asking you native speakers to explain it to me. Thanks a lot!

+Greentubee 'All in the wrist' is a bit of advice that people might give when doing something that requires physical dexterity, like throwing a ball or pickpocketing someone. If they are especially good at it, they might say that it's all about how you move your wrist, since that's the area that controls finer movements. Hope this helps

"All in the wrist" is a phrase that I could see applied to things like throwing a frisbee or playing the drums. There's something specific required in the motion of the wrist, but it is almost impossible to describe. But once you know how to throw a frisbee, you know what your wrist should be doing, a muscle memory thing. I believe Darwin uses it, in this context, to play with the fact that, as advice, "It's all in the wrist" is almost the opposite of helpful. It's completely vague and he begins to feel like it's just something you either have, or don't. He begins to believe he is flawed himself for not being able to manage something that is apparently so easy.

In the closing lyrics on the distorted vocal part, he says "Why can't I get a hang of this, if the truth fits on a floppy disk and it's all in the wrist?"

Referring to what I believe is simply finding happiness or your place in the world, he clearly believes that doing so IS easy, or should be. He just doesn't understand why he can't seem to pull it off.

As someone who just had to quit an incredibly toxic food service job and is struggling to find my place in the world, I relate to this song a lot.

Lucky bastard I wish I seen him perform this live, I wanna learn how to play so badly

    B.... M....

@Brent McMillan he takes off the top and bottom string and tunes the middle ones to F# D G# B for most of his songs. kooky bastard

This song is so soothing. Saw him perform it live...it was one of the greatest experiences ever.
