I usually discard progressive bands with weak musical choreography, but this band really needs to be out there....

this band sucks. Over the top, over produced, ostentatious/pompous, too orchestral. Nothing "metal" about this band. Their music lacks a soul. Its contrived bullshit.  You want to listen to a good metal album without even going into the extreme elements like death metal crap, go listen to Heaven and Hell (Sabbath) or Sad Wings of Destiny (Priest). Or the first 3 or 4 Metallica albums.

Those albums are all legendary but darkwater is at least a solid 3.5/5

So I was watching the World Series and they showed a shot of San Francisco Bay at night with the moon shining on it. I thought, "Hey, Darkwater would make a great band name. Let's see if anyone's claimed it." So I went to Google and this popped up. Thank you Google, San Francisco Giants, and my ADHD for letting me find this.

This is very cool! Very atmospheric and dynamic in a tasteful way. Awesome guitar solo! Thumbs up by my standards.

Dream Theater is not the top of Progressive anything. They are great at what they do and I respect that, but plenty of bands out there now days are doing the same if not better. This band has a great clean sound. Reminds me if Dark Tranquility and Evergrey had a baby.

@walrein947 this band doesn't compare to Dream Theater. Prog music is a broad genre name like all the rest. Just take the time to explore it & enjoy the ride. There are some good Polish Prog bands out there, Moonrise, Gru, Qube, American bands like Creations End. Talent wise it's hard to beat Dream Theater but check out a side project involving 3 of their members called Liquid Tension Experiment Live Acid Rain on here & enjoy.

BTW, the best rock guitarist (technical and artistic) I have ever heard was Prince. He doesn't flaunt it because he cares more about his music than coveting praise for his technical abilities. Music matches connectors in our brain and sometimes that connection is simple, that is when the complexity begins not necessarily the complexity from the music. Whatever moves you!

@rufus566 Oh yes I know prog can be egotistic because it is way more musical technical than most music genre's and I thought you might of been the kind of person who listens to prog exactly for that reason based on your comment. But based on what you just said there I just want to say the reason why I like this is because I find it very catchy not because of technical value. so what I'm saying is I like it because it sounds good to my ears :)

"Prog" can be as egotistical (and mind numbingly inept) as the genre name suggests, though on the other hand it cab be brilliant, pure, and genuine. The former is the majority, which makes the latter minority so special. Because the genre is about being "better than other music", fanboys flock to share in the pompous parade and portray themselves to their friends as being more intellectual than listeners of "lesser" music. Its all ego, so use your own ears...

@rufus566 Your maybe more experienced with this genre that say people like me for example. I like 3 dream theater songs and this song and that's all the prog songs I like so to me this is awesome because I have not heard much from this genre :)

No offense to fans of this band, but I don't see anything special going on here. Maybe I need to listen to more, but the couple of songs I have heard have been rather generic and derivative. What am I missing here?

This song is simply amazing. The first few listens, I thought it was good. By the 4th time I listened to the song, it clicked and I realized how much of a masterpiece this song is. I bought the cd a month ago, and it hasn't left my cd player. I'm freaking addicted to this album. If you love metal, you must get this!

What's up with the CM bashing? DT and CM are both awesome. Where I hear similarities in CM's stuff, there is certainly enough to make it their own and a pleasure to listen to. It's not like DT have no unoriginal riffs. :P

@MrLilitu I would respect CM if they showd respect to other bands mainly to DT Instead of stealing riffs and pretty much copying their melodies and solos...

@ilohrhcp Oh, in no way I'm comparing Darkwater with DT, imo DT is far beyond than any other progressive band could be (being also my favorite band of all time). But I dislike CM. I think they try too hard to sound like DT, they crossed the line between being influenced and just copying riffs and stuff

@MaximumPayne12 Perso, I'm searching other bands to listen (other than DT and CM) and I find this band musicaly and technicaly advanced, but I'm not going to say that it 'kicks' others bands like DT and CM (Okey, I confess, I'm a DT and a CM fan... :D, and it is a little reason for why I'm 'defending' this bands).Each band is differents, and why looking for the BEST progressive metal band (or power, or speed metal band) ABSOLUTELY ? The most important is to indulge oneself ! :)
