Dan Fogelberg - Sweet Magnolia (And The Traveling Salesman) Lyrics

Two hearts
Throwing off sparks
Young and in love with
Our freedom
Moonlight,
Those soft, southern nights
We were both ripe to fall.

I was
Out on my own
Playing for all who
Would listen
You were
As free as a bird
Flying from nest to nest.

But somewhere our eyes met
And our hands reached out
And we felt a kindred spirit
And as our faces touched
I could feel the fire
And needed so to just
Be near it.

Oh, lord
Those moments we soared
Borne on the wings of
Our passion
It seemed then
Like they'd never end
But times like that
Always must.

'Cause then one day I flew
Far away from you
I never knew how I'd regret it
My sweet magnolia belle
You know I've loved you well
Even if I never said it.

Magnolia, now I see
That freedom isn't free
And love's the only true
Redeemer
And when this journey's
Through
I'll be coming back for you
If you'll have this
Foolish dreamer.

I spend
A night now and then
Passing through town on
My travels
But someday
I'm gonna come back to stay
Magnolia, I'm coming home.

Dan truly was a great artist who wrote and sang from his heart - what an asset to mankind - may he make music to the angels in heaven. To live your dream like he did, is the most fulfilling purpose you can have on earth.

  15. D.... B....

one of his best songs. Masterfully beautifully woven...intriquite and lovely.

Dan Fogelberg was born to a mother who taught piano, obviously very well, and to a band leader dad. His childhood must have bee filled wth music. Plus, his voice.... Wow! To really appreciate Dans voice listen to Dancing Shoes from his Netherlands LP. Then, his ability as a composer. Dan had it all. His music was the reason I taught myself to play guitar. But, what many guitarist realize is Dan often played in open turnings, like he did with "Longer", which is played in open G tuning. You can get close in standard tuning, but that's not what Dan did. Then, even if you get so good as a guitarist, you can play lick for lick with Dan, how do you hit those heavenly noted. Dan Fogelberg had such range. Surely Heaven was happy to see Dan Fogelberg walk through the doors. It's seems so sad to me that most gifted souls are gone much to soon. Thank you, Dan... You will be missed, brother. Rest in peace "Wandering pilgrim, rest for the night. Sup with the Savior, and drink of His life." Amen!

Henley & Frey could reasonably be considered in the same bracket, but Dan was clearly the best imho.

    beautiful

  21. J.... A....

A lyrical genius if there ever was one!

    J.... A....

+Jeff Arnold i agree. Ironically the way he was so private and "under rated" is what helped keep his music so pure. Some of the artist today are pressed to put out so many songs and end of diluting and making a mess. Dan's music! SUBLIME and a a serendipitous treasure. sublime..

  22. B.... F....

    A songwriting masterwork.

  23. D.... A....

Hey! I'm up-and-coming producer/artist trying to get some exposure for a few of my songs. I'd love to let you use the music for free in some of your videos. I'm just looking to get my name out there. Get back to me if you want, you can listen to the tracks on my channel. If you like it I can send over the mp3. Thanks so much!

  24. C.... G....

I truly believe that the cumbersome title harmed this song's chances at radio success. Kind of like how the title "The Shawshank Redemption" hurt that great film's box office success. This is an exquisite Fogelberg tune.

Dan Fogelberg was one and still is my favorite musician. I remember when this song came out and it brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it. That was back in the 80's. Still today, when I listen to this song, it makes me cry. When Dan passed away, it was one of my saddest days. For three days, I played all of my Dan Fogelberg albums. Memories of high school girlfriends and dances after football games and parties at friends houses where we played and listened to him sing songs that ment so much to me. Thank you for sharing this.

    r.... l....

    Same here.

    r.... l....

me too. And Amy Grant; she too is under rated. People knew them on their radio hits but their ALBUMS is where the true treasures were.

I had the opportunity to grow up listening to Dan Fogelberg and seeing him in concert a few times. He had such a way of speaking to us through his music. And will forever continue to do so for many , many generations to come. Can I just say I love Dan Fogelberg. He must have known how loved he was by all of his fans. At least I  hope so. See you on the other side Dan.

    b.... d....

    Thank you Debbie!

  31. R.... L....

Probably one of the most romantic songs ever written and performed.  Bravo Dan Fogelberg!

  32. r.... l....

by far one of my favorite songs of Dan. Thank you for sharing.

  33. r.... l....

I've been listening to Dan's music since I was 10 years old. I'm now 53 and I still am listening to him. Even though this wasn't one of his known hits, it is by far one of my favorites. Back in 86, I watched Dan play this live in concert at the universal amp. in L.A. Calif. It was just him on piano and my girlfriend had tears in out eyes. Dan brought out emotion while he performed not only in himself, but to those that were listening. We miss you Dan, Rest in peace. Gone but not forgotton.

  34. w.... l....

Beautiful job on this one, (hell ALL of them duh- - - ). I have an identical twin brother, what I didn't know was that I had another "twin brother" when it came to feelings I woud eventualy experience over my years. EVERY song of his I've ever learned how to play, EVERY time I play it brings a personel experiance, to my strings and my vocals. What an incredible gift this man has given all of us.

  36. e.... ....

Bill, your videos are fantastic! any chance that you could post "Let Her Go" from Windows & Walls? I am missing that song. I don't need anything fancy--just the audio is what I am interested in. I used to own the CD, but lost it! Thanks!

@smsg521 Dan’s lyrics and melodies have inspired me to come forward to create tribute videos to him after his passing, and I am glad I have done it and accomplished many. May his timeless music and boundless love continue to heal us through the toughest times, bring joy and happiness to you and stays in our hearts for ever on... God bless you always!

JM Eagle Thank you, you do such great videos, Dan was wonderful, his music is beyond awesome, I saw him every chance he came to town. Never wanted the show to end. I have always loved this particular song.

  46. l.... ....

I live in the Magnolia State (MS), and got to see Dan debut this song on his solo acoustic tour in Jackson, MS in 1981. I was a junior in high school, and it was the first (and best) concert I've ever seen. R.I.P. Dan. You are sorely missed.

  47. f.... ....

Even a person far away from the states can appriciate this kind of music. And I must say, the pictures following the tune is awsome. It´s really a sad song and I like the soft nice clarinet solo.
RIP Dan. I often listen to this vinyl album.
All the best from Per - Värnamo - Sweden
