Curtis Mayfield - We Got To Have Peace Lyrics
We got have peace
To keep the world alive
And war to cease
We got to have joy,
With strength we can't destroy
People please hear us (people please hear us)
Through our voice the world knows
There's no choice
We're begging save the children
The little ones
Who just don't understand
To breed their young
And help purify the land
People please hear us (people please hear us)
Through our voice the world knows
There's no choice
And the people in the neighbourhood,
Who would if they only could,
Meet and shake the other's hand,
Work together for the good of the land
Give us all an equal chance,
It could be such a sweet romance
And the soldiers who are dead and gone,
If only we could bring back one,
He'd say "We've got to have peace"
To keep the world alive
And war to cease
We got to have joy
Ture in our hearts
With strength we can't destroy
People please hear us (people please hear us)
Through our voice the world knows
There's no choice
And the people in the neighbourhood
Who would if they only could
Meet and shake the other's hand
Work together for the good of the land
Give us all an equal chance
It could be such a sweet romance
And the soldiers who are dead and gone
If only we could bring back one
He'd say "We've got to have peace"
Aah - hah, we got to have peace
Let let the world know it
Peace, peace, peace
Aah - hah, we got to have peace
People please hear us (people please hear us)
Through our voice the world knows
There's no choice
Save the children
Save the children
Save the children
And the people in the neighbourhood
Who would if they only could
Meet and shake the other's hand
Work together for the good of the land
Give us all an equal chance
It could be such a sweet romance
And the soldiers who are dead and gone
If only we could bring back one
He'd say "We've got to have peace"
Lo - rd, we got to have peace
Let the people say it
Peace peace peace
Aah - hah, we got to have peace

Curtis Mayfield We Got To Have Peace Comments
Brother Curtis Mayfield is so electrifying. When he was with the Impressions he was special and when he went on his own he still uplifting. Brother Curtis Mayfield was a man and what a soul singer and musician RIP
Poignant as nothings changed..MAN WILL DESTROY HIMSELF
A song for a Brave New World!
We have to have peace to live.
only thing wrong with this, is that it ends....just perfect
awesome talent, sadly missed
I used to borrow my grandads tape of souled out, loved this song forever
Who is here because it played on it's always Sunny?
Pure genius! Had 'Maestro' Curtis Mayfield been present in the Mid-18th Century he would had given Johann Bach, Amadeus Mozart, Johann Handel, etc. a run for their "shillings"! It were a pity that he never considered composing poly-phonic "classic" music, nor even dallied with the notion of composing and opera!!!
The gentle genius!!! The most underrated musician of the 20th century!!! Love Curtis!!
This great "compo" of that other "King" (Curtis), should be companioned with the regal FREDA PAYNES' "Bring The Boys Back Home", and also the "immortal" Joe Tex's "I BELIEVE WERE GONNA MAKE IT"!!!
Working Class Hero.!
...And "World-Class" composer, "Troubadour", leader!!!
May this go out to the victims of the New Zealand mosque shootings and their families xxxxxxxxxxx

28 yeas old and just discovering Curtis Mayfield... Cant believe i never hears this soul/rnb and that groove postive vibs and god damn that voice and soul he sings with
I'll give you a clue, "son": IT IS AGAINST THE GENIUS (AND CREATIVE VARIETY) OF AFRICANO MUSIC, POETRY AND LYRICAL PHILOSOPHY, IS WHY OUR CULTURE WAS "CO-OPTED" BY RECORD MOGULS, AND WHY THE BRITS DEPLOYED THEIR "SEWER RATS" FROM THE DEPTHS OF LONDON AND LIVERPOOL WITH THE DASTARDLY "BRITISH INVASION"!
That's why you don't hear this music anymore!!!
Curtis, you will always be remembered as a very cool guy.
Why is there so much hate? Please explain so I can have some peace....
Wonderful uplifting song, shouldve been massive
This is epic on so many levels. What a message. Gigantic, still.

a very much needed anthem for the u s a now john Purvis
Music with a message from the Roots album 1971 on the Buddah label, one of the best albums that Curtis Mayfield made, it features Leroy Hutson & his wife on backing vocals, this track, Curtis sends out a message of peace the world over, in our times of conflicts, viiolence & wars, maybe then the world would be a better place with Peace
Let 'em know. 'Nuff said. Blessings
Great singer, great songwriter, great man! This is one of his best, it featured on Top of the Pops though sadly didn't make our top 50 which was what we had at the time.
Curtis Mayfield was one of the most important Soul artists for a variety of reasons that I will list here:
1. He produced, wrote, performed and released (on his own record label / publishing co) which was rare for black (or any) artists in those days (usually signed to awful record contracts paying them nothing). Curtom Records went on to release records for lots of other soul and funk artists.
2. Despite coming from a poverty stricken background and suffering extreme racism, he rose above it and always wrote and sang uplifting songs about black and white unity.
3. He fought for black civil rights and was a leading advocate of change at the forefront of the movement. He took a stand against drugs in the album "Superfly" - when others (Shaft) were glorifying The Ghetto, Mayfield used this opportunity to slam drugs in the song "Pusherman" which he aimed not only at lower class Blacks (as was the case with Shaft) but White society too.
4. His music was not just extremely catchy hitting the charts many times spanning genres from gospel, R&B, Soul, Funk and Disco. But also the lyrics were always very poignant and meaningful. He touched on some of the most controversial topics such as the war in Vietnam, black poverty and suicide ("To Be Invisible").
I am blessed to say that I saw Curtis perform in London twice in the late 80s and early 90s just before his tragic accident.
RIP Curtis, your spirit prevails everywhere.
Greatest of all time
You don't need to qualify him with the adjective "soul"! He was one of the most important artists! Full Stop (period, or whatever!)
schmatever He was also one of the first African American executives at a major record company (Columbia/Epic Records) for their OKEH Label where he produced hits for Major Lance and (I believe Billy Butler and the Enchanters).
He also wrote hits for Jerry Butler, Gene Chandler, and others almost single handedly defining the CHICAGO SOUND of the 1960s then re-defining it in the 1970s.
Then becoming one of the first R&B writer/producers to provide music for movies and film with SUPERFLY, SPARKLE, LET'S DO IT AGAIN, CLAUDINE, and A PIECE OF THE ACTION!
Can you spell GENIUS??!!!
Well said and a lot of what he said still stands and makes sense down to this very day, well known artist known for his music prophecy that still fits in today's world!!!!
My dad used to play this song alot when I was younger. He had a 2 disc CD with Curtis' greatest hits and he played this one alot and now that I'm older and I'm actually paying attention to the lyrics I understand why he liked this soo much. Beautiful song! Save the children!
great song and great message.

Tonight is the 1st time I've ever heard this song, and I'm already regretting it took this long. Such a wonderful song. Beautiful.
llama40204 last night was my first time.
4 years after you post this. This is my first time hearing this song and I feel exactly how you felt back then. We gotta have peace
Absolutely COSMIC, man! And that wild string arrangement acting as "counter-point" to the theme "peace". This was the genius of yet another unsung, "poet extraordinaire", Curt Mayfield!!!
BIG BASS WORK
BIG VIBES
Listening to this on Remembrance Sunday on 11/11/14 when we in the UK remember those who died in War. Parades and bands and politicians bowing their heads while they sell arms and stoke wars in other lands. We have to stop this division and strife. The line between good and bad runs through our hearts NOT between people. Curtis was a good man spreading a message we still don't really understand. Peace to all my brothers and sisters. Love and create a better world!

@mmjaljs yeah but we have to bless the lost too, like the ones following Satan
You missed the point bro.....If a person following Satan how in the world can they have peace?
@shithead2415 Excuse (and thanks for kind words). Those who are "Lost", and follow "Satan" are, in William Shakespeare's words ("the Merchant of Venice", I think): "He (they) hear no music...."!!!

indeed, indeed!!
Love, love, love for this piece and the incomparable Curtis Mayfield.
LORD KNOWS THAT WE NEED PEACE IN THIS WORLD. NO MORE MILITARY WARS, TERRORIST ATTACKS, OR GUN VIOLENCE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOODS. " THE SOLDIERS THAT ARE DEAD AND GONE, IF ONLY WE COULD BRING BACK ONE". SO TRUE.
brings tears to my eyes such a beautiful song, Curtis Mayfield should have been the first black us president !
I'm a huge Curtis fan. Discovered his music in the early 90s and managed to see him play a couple of times in London... never stopped listening and loving his music. Now I live in Israel and this song is even more resonant to me. Curtis you are a blessing to this world and your music and message will live forever. Shalom from Israel...

SUPER.....AWESOME................TUNE.
PEACE, from me a white guy to all you black people and to everyone else!
"AMERICAN"!
We are so much richer because of him, what a cat!
The fact that this man still managed to put out uplifting music after near total paralysis inspires. It's funny how you can miss someone you never met. But I guess if you love his music, in some way you did know him.
soo fresh and uplifting
Rise up mighty black man and black woman, free Howard Morgan, please support warriors.

Lets stop the wars now the human race we don't win hurting each other is not the way at all live with other in the world with love & enjoy life peace.
J.T. Blackness seriously. how do people not get that this song isn't about exclusion, it's about calling of us to come together despite any difference and bring peace
Curtis Mayfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999
Remember this song. My older brother was a big Curtis fan. Now I know why. Great post.
This will stand the test of time. Nothings changed!!! RIP Brother Mayfield
Proper Business Class.
This song may not be as well known as some of Curtis' other hits, but the lyrics are just as meaningful in 2011 as they were in the early 70s...doesn't matter if the subject is Vietnam or Iraq.
