Crowell, Rodney - I Ain't Livin' Long Like This Lyrics

You looked for trouble and you found it son
Straight down the barrel of a lawman's gun
You'd try to run but you don't think you can
You make one move and you're dead man, friend
I ain't living long like this
I can't live at all like this, can I baby

He slipped the handcuffs on behind my back
Then he left me freezing on a steel rail track
They got 'em all in the jailhouse, ain't they bay
I ain't living long like this
Grew up in Houston off of Wayside drive
Son of a charhop in some all night dive
Dad drove a stock car to an early death
All I remember was a drunk man's death
I ain't living long like this
I can't live at all like this can I baby

We know the story how the wheel goes round
Don't let 'em take you to the man downtown
Can't sleep at all in the jailhouse, baby
I ain't living long like this
You live for angel, she's a roadhouse queen
Make Texas ruby look like Sandra Dee
You want to love her but you don't know how
You're at the bottom of the jailhouse now
I ain't living long like this
I can't live at all like this, can I baby

You know the story 'bout the jailhouse rock
Go on and do it, but just don't get caught
They got 'em all in the jailhouse, ain't they baby
I ain't living long like this

I seem to recall three songs on this album went to number 1 before Rodney released his version on this album. The Houston Kid.

  2. K.... L....

I am searching for a version I heard and can't find it. I have heard this, waylon, emmylou, gary Stewart, Brooks and Dunn...just can't find the version I first heard.

Gary Stewart recorded this song first - then Emmylou did it, then Rodney, then Albert Lee, then Jerry Jeff Walker, and then Waylon....

I like Waylon's electric take. So true, as lyrics go...

Waylon usually gets the credit, but it's great to hear the original...

Yeah, guys. Crowell's debut album (way before CDs, Mark).. This is a great rock tune, often played by road house bands... Another KILLER chorus from Rodney.

God Rodney this is as Good or better than waylon's version

+Torre Rodriguez Waylon's maybe my favorite country star, but I prefer Rodney's version. Emmylou has a version that's just as good if not better. So many people have covered this song, and I haven't heard a bad version. It's a testament to Rodney's prowess as a songwriter. He may not have the most complex lyrics, but he is expert at elegant simplicity and memorable catchy songs. With this song, the attitude and jagged 1/8 note staccato rhythm of the lyrics dictates the arrangement, a chugging rock n roll/blues shuffle that keeps pushing forward. The way they blend with rhythm section forces all of the lead instruments to keep up, and there's not a lot of room for interpretation except in tone and atmosphere. You just can't fuck this song up. It won't let you.

Emmylou if it a live show. Definitely
