Crosby, Stills & Nash - Southern Cross Lyrics

Oooh ...

Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern islands
Sailing a reach before a followin' sea
She was makin' for the trades on the outside
And the downhill run to Papeete

Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas
We got eighty feet of the waterline nicely making way
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away

Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten

(Around the world) I have been around the world
(Lookin') Lookin' for that woman girl
(Who knows she knows) Who knows love can endure
And you know it will

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day

So I'm sailing for tomorrow my dreams are a dyin'
And my love is an anchor tied to you tied with a silver chain
I have my ship and all her flags are a' flyin'
She is all that I have left and music is her name

Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten

(I've been around the world) I have been around the world
(Lookin') Lookin' for that woman girl
Who knows love can endure
And you know it will, and you know it will
Yes

Oooh ...

So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do
You will survive being bested
Somebody fine will come along, make me forget about loving you
In the Southern Cross

Crosby, Stills & Nash Southern Cross Comments
  1. a.... ....

I "met" Stills at a party in early 80's. I was drunk, slapped him on the back and loudly said, "Stephen my man"! He looked annoyed and turned away. He did the right thing LOL.

  2. S.... B....

It's just too bad Graham Nash has to be such a whiny Bitch and Break them up! Asshole acts like it's "His" band and all about him. He's a side player, harmony guy and a Hack!

  3. J.... F....

Awful stinks borrrrrring....put on nugent's cat scratch fever....

  4. J.... ....

we won't ever here songwriting like this anymore. Such a shame. Not sure if it's just because we don't have the talent, people don't want to here good music or all the good songs have already been written. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I had the privilege of living aboard a sailboat, built in 1923 for the commodore of the New Orleans yacht club. She was called Rainbow. She was my first true love. I went on to work Cruise ships and the like. But there can never be music as beautiful as the rigging slapping the masts early in the watch. Right at. BMNT. Before morning nautical twilight.

  9. C.... S....

This is about nature/the earth Nd it’s beauty Or something deeper?

  10. C.... S....

Magic....Steven sounds like Kenny Rogers on this...blasphemy I know but Kenny is a legend.

  14. J.... C....

    Crosby looks comatose.

  15. J.... L....

A San Francisco Acid Rocker, an East Texas Bluesman and a English Folk Rocker, who would've thought it! Oh, then add a Canadian singer/songwriter and they only get better.

    J.... L....

For a great American band. Crosby was from L.A.

  16. w.... d....

Steven Stills is one of the most beautiful sounds of life.

  17. M.... S....

  23. J.... F....

I don't know what kind of music you like rock, country, whatever. If you don't like dis, something wrong with you

  24. M.... C....

Heard this a kid in the 70's....it was an okay song......now I am older and wiser .....one of my favorites ever.

  25. C.... A....

Just think I am only 29 and this song has made my life better and how long ago did this song come out buy these awesome guys. alot of midnight rides and bowls smoked listening to CSN. Awesome images come to mind when you listen to there music.

  26. b.... ....

Why does the one in the middle with the 'chipmunk voice' have to keep posing like a rock star? Get off the stage 'chipmunk voice', Stephen rules this group.

  27. j.... ....

Taylor Swift won the American Music ten-year award today.
I came here to try and wipe that image from my memory banks.

the day my great uncle died i found this record chaseing cats with my aunt

  29. S.... J....

what kind of idiot gives this great tune and performance a thumbs down? this is the best

  30. R.... S....

Amazing, amazing harmonies. One of my all time fav. CSNY and America my all time favorite bands. They don't make music like this anymore. "And Music Is Her Name"

  31. B.... S....

Whenever Gram Nash gets to play guitar, he seems to hop around a lot on stage.

  32. m.... j....

Crosby Still & Nash Alto trío de Grandes Maestros del Folk y voces muy Armoniosas! !!!!!

  33. M.... N....

I have heard this song so many times and NEVER get tired of it, or what it is a reminder of. Being a sailor and a musician, I admire the simple quality and message. Having gone through the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, & CSNY era, I understand the meaning. For those who lament the music of today, listen to Ed Sheeran's music and know that there are musicians who can craft a meaningful message into a song like "Perfect."

  34. D.... S....

Remember the days when we had to try to figure out song lyrics the hard way?

  35. J.... R....

    Appreciate Crosby being cool...

  36. E.... ....

I just wanna know what drug Graham was on LOL!!

  37. c.... ....

    Love and Love ❤️

  38. R.... H....

When I want to hear REAL MUSIC this is the first song I play

The more luminosity you have, the higher you go! Undesrtanding, is the keyword! The light that shines brighter,...,Beware!!!!

  40. F.... ....

I've always found this song relaxing yet somehow energizing at the same time. Always gets a 2nd play...

  41. P.... ....

Why can't we have wonderful music like this anymore? Hmmm? CSN..... not many better.

  42. R.... H....

    This song never gets old....

  43. M.... G....

I love this live version. What a song.

  44. H.... T....

I never get tired of this song.. CSN!

  45. D.... L....

boo to the 1.1k,this is fantastic

  46. J.... ....

A perfect storm that churned out a beautiful song. One of my favorites. Shout out to the drummer, don’t know who he is, but he knows what he’s doing.

  47. [.... B....

The most unfitting song for a brutal fight scene but damn if it wasn't fantastic anyway.

  48. B.... B....

    Timeless.

  49. s.... ....

Graham Nash, wow, those background vocals are amazing. Makes this song.

  50. J.... H....

This group inspired the writing of Bell Bottoms to Gucci by Ellen Everman...if you'd like to take a trip back to those days, read the book. https://www.acclaimpress.com/books/bell-bottoms-to-gucci/

  58. T.... ....

"She is all that I have left, and Music is her name."

  83. J.... C....

Two nights ago I was laying on the top of a boat off of Komodo Island in Indonesia, watching the beginning of the Perseid Meteor Shower, and staring at The Southern Cross. This song has been running through my mind since then.

  84. K.... G....

My two sons (20 and 17 yes old) and I play and sing this song together quite often. It took several hours to get to where we sounded acceptable, but now when we sing it the people love it.

  85. b.... ....

still have this song on 45 rpm stashed away -- can't believe how good the 3 of them sound here -- Thank U YouTube!!

  86. E.... M....

    Stupid crosby is stoned

  87. J.... P....

If you've ever suffered through a heartbreaking terrible break up this song will make so much sense. Thanks Stephen.

  88. L.... W....

Stephen Stills wrote this immediately after his divorce. He got on his boat and was sailing, trying to make sense of this new divorce. And if that wasn't enough, there was turmoil within the band AND he was trying to kick his alcohol and drug problems. That's ALOT for one man to go through all at the same time. If nothing good came from all that misfortune, atleast he got one of the greatest songs ever written out of the ordeal. God bless you Stephen Stills.

  89. S.... A....

Just love Stephen Stills voice...great guitar player too!

  90. A.... R....

Absolutely fantastic.....nobody.... and I mean nobody can come close to this great song in this era. I was born in 1961 and thank God for the great music.

  93. O.... C....

Despite all the drugs and bullshit they endured, still one of the greatest bands ever. Stephen stills is one of rocks greatest voices.

  94. L.... D....

Its July 2019 and I'm still in love!! With this song!! Folks, this I'd truly beautiful music. The kind that transports us to a beautiful ,happy place ,away from the complexities and stress of everyday existence. Just let your mind carry you away, get lost in this music!

  98. K.... O....

Years ago, I went to see CSN and there was a small problem with rain. After a 1 hour delay, it turned into Crosby, Stills, Nash AND YOUNG! The show went on for 4 hours, and after all these years, it still rates as the best show I ever saw.

  99. S.... C....

    Excellent song
