David THANK YOU, may God bless you for this.
So ma y fine, loving Memories.
I used to hear.onize on my flute with this tune.

I like the 2016 recording also.
God help to restore beloved Notre Dame. She is like an old sweet friend to many of us.

  8. F.... F....

This is the tune the bells of Vendôme ring! I never heard this version before, and only did tonight because of the tragedy going on in Paris as Notre-Dame burns. Someone has linked it for the (other) Notre-Dame reference... Well, this is a curiously happy memory to come out of such a sad evening, as some of the best times of my life with my late husband were spent in Vendôme (and in Paris too).

  9. L.... D....

I don't speak French. Would greatly appreciate a translation. I remembered that this song mentions Notre Dame. Very sad news today.

    L.... D....

I looked for this song exactly for the same reason as you...because Notre Dame was mentioned! Such a terrible thing happened today...it's so incredibly sad to see the milestones of our culture, our art, turning into ashes...now I am praying on the wonderful harmonies of this genial man and musician,David Crosby. This album is pure beauty...

    What you say?...does not matter?

  19. N.... L....

MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THE LYRICS ARISE FROM A CHILDREN'S SONG. EACH PLACE IS THE NAME OF A CATHEDRAL OR CHURCH.

  22. s.... r....

Je suis persuadé que le groupe Québécois HARMONIUM s' est inspiré de Crosby !...

  23. C.... L....

This song is an old french song from the fifteenth century. It talks about the period when France was far from a consolidated realm. France was divided on several parts. And several  nobles wanted to take the power and become  king.
The first son of who was considered king at that time had no more possessions than what is mentionned in the song : a rather small territory in the centre of France.
How D. Crosby had know this song ?
I think that song was "imported" by french immigrants, maybe in Louisiana.
Anyway, D. Crosby song is a jewel.

  24. S.... B....

    Carillon de Vendôme

  26. b.... ....

I don't know the 'Ohio' song (which borrows a sample from this) people are talking about but this song (and the other choral songs from this album) does sound massively influential on Fleet Foxes.

    b.... ....

David writes song about France. David is American.Justice 'borrows' song about France and makes it about America. Justice is French. Justice made a cool tribute like that.

  27. j.... ....

    Grace under pressure

  28. A.... C....

I have searched for this for nearly a Lifetime. Thank you.

  29. V.... ....

Ok, damn - I came here from Justice's track Ohio. After listening to this; now I think theirs is a cover!!

    V.... ....

+Putthatinur Pipe They didn't sample it. They wrote different words for it with the same melody. I'd call it a cover.

    V.... ....

    Po-tay-to, po-tah-to

    V.... ....

No cover, it was inspiration, their notes aren't even all the same.
You may call it a remake of sorts

    V.... ....

    That's funny

    V.... ....

    Nope you missed much things

    Mes amis, que reste-t-il ?
À ce Dauphin si gentil ?
    Orléans, Beaugency,
    Notre-Dame de Cléry,
    Vendôme, Vendôme !

    Les ennemis ont tout pris
    Ne lui laissant par mépris
    Qu'Orléans, Beaugency,
    Notre-Dame de Cléry,
    Vendôme, Vendôme !

    J.... L....

    We!  Mercy buckets!

  31. D.... B....

I was born in Orleans in France, it's just beside Beaugency and Clery. I'm glad to hear such a great song for my city.

  32. P.... D....

love this song....love it...really wish it was longer...(what a talent!)

  33. S.... ....

Psychemagik brought me here! Seriously, check out Valley of Paradise, it's amazing. Wasn't expecting the original to be so good as well.

    S.... ....

Same! Could not I had not heard the original before.

  34. D.... ....

Thanks ... I hadn't heard that in literally 40 years. (And the local DJ that played it when I was a kid said it was from *Deja Vu* (CSNY), so I lost track of it.)

    D.... ....

Myself as well. Been a helluva long time. Beautiful!

  35. I.... P....

  36. E.... C....

Très belle version que je chantonne de temps a autre!
    Merci.

  37. M.... S....

The song "Ohio" by the band Justice is clearly inspired by this song. Great job creating this song, it stand the rest of time.

    M.... S....

Yes sir, great music will live on, in more ways than one could originally know.

    M.... S....

Orleans is a traditional French folk song about the bells of various churches and is hundreds of years old. The similarity to "Ohio" (written by Neil Young alone) is that both are in a minor key.

    M.... S....

@SweetJungThang He's not referring to Young's song Ohio but the song called Ohio by the French electronic duo called Justice.

    M.... S....

    RIGHT ON

  38. R.... W....

    what an album

    R.... W....

I actually DO consider this the best album I ever bought, ever listened to. I remember hearing it as I lived at a house with 6 others in college.

    R.... W....

I know, right? We were lucky to get such music in our lives.....

  39. L.... m....

    Superbe Version

  40. P.... D....

    always loved him!

  41. R.... J....

Still sounds good after all these years.

  42. l.... ....

Tank you, Koos! I didn't know this and I like to know the story behind songs I love, like this one...

  43. F.... C....

inspiration to justice and their song ohio.

  44. K.... J....

All completely clear. Thanx so much!

  45. l.... g....

Thanks for your answer Jaspers. Blois is not mentioned because the song was written for a Charle's visit in the city of...Blois. It was obvious the Dauphin controled the city he came in, therefore people who wrote the song dit not mentioned it. But the most important is that the song is great! :)

  46. K.... J....

with Charles I meant Duke Chsarles d'Orleans of course

  47. K.... J....

Thanks Loic. I just wrote what I heard from a historian. It sounded plausible to me, first because the poem mentions the dauphin and not Charles and second because the city (and castle) of Blois is not mentioned although it has always been in Charles's possession. Finally, Orleans Beaugency and ND de Clery were already considered almost lost due to the long siege by the English, had not Jeannes action broken it. But I guess yo0u must have alternative sources and mine may be incorrect of course.

  48. l.... g....

Hello Jasper. Not exactly. This song is about cities controlled by Charles before Jeanne d'Arc. Therefore they are very few.

  49. P.... G....

La musique du "carillon de Vendôme" a été reprise par le groupe "Il était une fois" pour la chanson "Colombe"

    P.... G....

En fait, ils ont repris la version de David Crosby qui est en mode mineur.

  50. K.... J....

The lyrics are from a very old french children's song 'Le Carillion de Vendôme'. It tells about the deeds of Jeanne d'Arc who won various cities for the dauphin, later king Charles VII, a swing of balance in the 100 years war at the end of the middle ages.

This is also sampled in déjà vu by paysage d'hiver.

  53. A.... B....

Psykemagik samplet this one on their track, Valley of Paradise. Love both versions.
