I’ll Be Home For Christmas was originally recorded by Bing Crosby in 1943, and it quickly became one of America’s most popular holiday songs. The song is written from the perspective of a soldier serving over seas during World War 2. While the melody is one that lingers in our minds, the meaning of the song is actually quite somber as the closing line reveals that being home for Christmas isn’t quite a reality just yet.

The song particularly struck a nerve with overseas GIs and their families awaiting their return from serving their country in World War 2. The GI magazine said Crosby accomplished more for military morale than anyone else of that era.

The story goes that around Christmas in 1943 the chaplain on the Battleship North Carolina knew that the crew was feeling homesick as they were expected to still be overseas during the holiday season. He had an idea and collected $5 from every crew member that had children back home.

The chaplain made a list of all that gave him money for their children at home and he sent that money along with the addresses of the sailor’s home to Macy’s department store. The request was made for Macy’s to buy gifts using the money provided for the crew’s family and have the gift mailed to their homes in time for Christmas.

As Christmas approached, the service men on the ship gathered for the annual Christmas show that involved songs, skits and entertainment for the troops aboard the Battleship North Carolina. When the entertainment had ended, the chaplain had a surprise to reveal.

When Macy’s received the money from the chaplain along with the list of the addresses, they thought that in addition to just giving gifts to these military families at home, they should give a one of a kind gift to the soldiers as well. Since they had the addresses for all the sailors homes, they reached out to each family and asked if they wanted to come to the Macy’s store and send a special message to their loved one who would not be able to be home for Christmas.

The men aboard the Battleship North Carolina sat there and saw their wives, children and loved ones appear before them on the screen as Macy’s had videoed each of their families sending them a Christmas message. These rugged sailors watched, wept and rejoiced. They weren’t home for Christmas, but what made their homes special was the Christmas gift they received on that December 25th in 1943.

This Christmas I want be home, there is know one there anymore. I miss my parents. This song bring back so many memories for me. The tears come I am still thankful and grateful.

I was walking around a drug store when they played this. it didn't take back a few verses and I had to start chocking back eye-drips. Immediately I was filled with WW2 images of GIs singing this to themselves while tucked away in their "safe spaces"; they were called fox holes back then.

For the first time in many years, I will be staying home for Christmas. Some time will be spent with friends, but I also look forward to time alone listening to Christmas music and watching schmaltzy Christmas movies.  I will never forget one night in December 1970 when I had just returned from my brother's wedding in Tennessee. I got home to Conestoga, PA to an empty house, but I remember listening to a Christmas album and feeling very happy.

Damn I miss the good old days where people would celebrate christmas with joy and christmas spirit even though there's no snow where I'm from. I live in a muslim country but was born in a part of the city where christian is the majority so we would celebrate christmas in every corner of the city. Now because of college I move to the capital city where they don't even celebrate christmas apart from christmas discount in malls and some christmas music played here and there, so on christmas night I would just play some old chrismas music (like this one) and movies (like home alone, jingle all the way, some good old disney movies, etc) in my apartment and just reminiscing the good old days without my family 😥

Something about christmas makes the world right. I heard this song when I was a young kid. Things were simpler back then. When I was 7 I did what my parents said, went to class. I didn't have to deal with things like LLCs, 1099 forms, content management systems, keeping clients happy.ect back then it was just decorating the tree and hoping Santa brought me the plastic play castle I wanted. I miss the simplicity of childhood and the sense of purpose attached to everything.

My mom passed away 7 months ago and I was thinking about the first Christmas I will spend without her in 47 years. Sitting here with tears streaming down my face.

Wow, you guys really love Christmas deep in your hearts and yearn for it always. Well, it's finally now the season. Merry Christmas this season. I always had this myth in my mind about, 'Christmas in July,' but didn't think people really did it until Youtube came about.
