Cream - Crossroads Lyrics

I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
Down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
Asked the Lord above for mercy, "Save me if you please."

I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
Down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
Nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed me by.

Well I'm going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.

Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.

You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.*
Run, you can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.*
And I'm staying at the crossroads, believe I'm sinking down.

I went down to the crossroad, fell down on my knees
I went down to the crossroad, fell down on my knees
Asked the Lord above "Have mercy, save poor Bob, if you please."

Mmmmm, standin' at the crossroad, I tried to flag a ride
Standin' at the crossroad, I tried to flag a ride
Didn't nobody seem to know me, everybody pass me by

Mmm, the sun goin' down, boy, dark gon' catch me here
oooo, ooee, eee boy, dark gon' catch me here
I haven't got no lovin' sweet woman that love and feel my care

You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.
You can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.
Lord, that I'm standin' at the crossroad, babe, I believe I'm sinking down.

Hello1951Fidel Just heard this on Golden Years Radio . net and all the 60's music that gets played takes me back to the good old days when I had a rock band called The Presidents. Our recording for Decca in 1965 was lost for 53 years and just released in June 2018 and Golden Years has included it in the playlist. Got the old band back together and made a video so it's me 78 miming to me singing 25 - great fun and who knows we might trend : -) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjcKGcM0Rtc

  19. Deroga Tree

    POW ...right into it!

  20. Mr Fixit Bass NM

Listening to Jack’s bass line on this you wonder if he had like 3 or 4 different bass lines running through his head all at the same time and would switch back and forth between them in mid flight but managed to make it sound fantastic.

  21. Mr Fixit Bass NM

Can you imagine if Robert Johnson could come back and hear this. I think he would be very proud of these three legends. They did his song a lot of justice.

    Deroga Tree

And Cream was VERY sure that you knew who wrote these Delta Blues songs they covered

My all time favorite Cream song! Perhaps THE best live rock recording followed by Ten Years After "Undead".

  27. Michael Glickman

For those wondering, the musicians are lead vocalist-bassist-harmonica player Jack Bruce, guitarist-backing vocalist Eric Clapton, and drummer Ginger Baker.

    The Unlucky Logan

    Eric sings on this btw

@The Unlucky Logan I knew that, Captain Obvious.

  36. Richard Marshall Bowman

If Robert Johnson really sold his soul to The Devil in order to really play the blues...then who did Jimi make a deal with...and what was that deal.

    Richard Marshall Bowman

Jimi sold several other people's souls to be that good.  In any case he got the better end of that deal.

  37. Richard Marshall Bowman

"You can still powerhouse baby by the riverside.....

  43. TheEleatic

A miracle they lived past 27.

  44. Joseph Fox

I MET THEM IN NYC A LONG TIME AGO

  45. Mike Stone

It is very hard to comment on something that is near perfect.... as this version of this song is. "Clapton, Clapton, Clapton" is all I ever hear, for the most part, about this version of this song ....AND he deserves it. The lead guitar on this song is about as close to perfect as it gets. Amazing. Wonderful. What makes it so great is that it resonates. Resonates with something inside of us that says "yes, this is it". On the other hand, and not to give one iota of criticism for Clapton, is that Bruce on the bass is every bit as amazing as Clapton is on the lead. Stunning. Amazing. Mind blowing.  Bass guitar players are, sadly, often overlooked but just try to take the bass track out of this song and see what happens. The lead by Clapton in this song may be one of the most enjoyable rock leads of any song ever but the bass run by Bruce IS, perhaps, one of the most amazing ever.... nuff said. BTW, none of the above takes away, one bit, from the amazing drumming by Baker in this song. Amazing.

    Mike Harrison

No need to get wordy...just say there the best !!!!!!

  46. Darkwing Duck

cant believe this are only 3 people make that much sound

    Brenda Hawkins

Darkwing Duck hi would love to know what you think of my 16 year old grandsons cover of this. Just him and his guitar but I think it’s a pretty good sound. Hoping to gain him a few subscribers 😜 https://youtu.be/fKqYHNWa8wM

  47. Damian Woollam

Here,'s to Ginger Baker! May you bang the drums wherever you go in the afterlife. You cut a swathe through the psychedelic era with your ridiculous psychotic percussive brilliance. You engaged me so heavily every time I saw you demonise a drum kit and take it to another layer of hell!! John Bonham and Keith Moon are there to welcome you to the podium man! Possession lies beyond the crossroads! RIP XO

  48. Stephanie Johnson

Robert Johnson song with a twist I'd say. He was a Blues singer in the 30's Mississippi. A black artist living in the horrible south.

  49. Hermann Winters

    Love Cream.

  50. Benjamin King

The lynyrd skynyrd cover is way better than this and way faster beat take skynyrd any day over this

    Nate Calhoun

Lynyrd Skynyrd sucks ass gtfoh all those guitarists and still can't match up with one Clapton lmao

    Cousin Bocephus

I know its an opinion, but theres no way skynyrd's cover is better in any way. Faster doesn't mean better neither

    Tina Staples

Benjamin, you are the stupidest person to ever live.

  52. Stephen Stiso

One of the best songs ever recorded. The masterpiece was performed at the Royal Albert Hall in 1968 ,didn’t have the technology as we today, GREAT SONG GREAT PERFORMANCE

  53. James Brooks

They all were continually adjusting to each other's playing...especially Baker to Clapton or vice versa.
One of the top ten songs in my generation for sure.

  54. Nilaiah Harris-Jones

Cream were a perfect 60s British blues rock band and it's too bad that they didn't last long because they let their egos get in the way of their musicianship and professional relationship. But anyways, they were great for each other. Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker will be missed

  55. Bill Hsieh

Rest in peace Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. Pioneers of rock shall never be forgotten.

  56. Michael Fielder

All these Robert Johnson know it all folks crack me up. Lmao
You better believe there were many before that fella that simply never had the opportunity to get recorded, both black and white.

  57. Steven Langfield

Three musicians at the height of their game playing as one.

  58. Marcelo Mellado

Nicagando la gente no grito luego del solo

  59. Greg Downing

I love this song. Its my favorite Cream song. To me it sounds like all three are trying to out duel each other with their instruments like its a completion. Nothing wrong with that. If that was the case, us fans benefit from it.

Does anyone know if this is the SG or the 335? Or hell, even the firebird?

    Sabita Burges

It was the ES 335, Clapton confirmed it in one of his interviews

  72. John Kurtz

Each of these fabulous musicians were at the top of their powers

  73. DaggylMc Gra

Having always loved this version, I was interested when I read Clapton said he got this song from Robert Johnson. Turns out Johnson was one of Clapton's musical inspirations...... sure you can find the story some where. So do check out Robert Johnson playing/singing this song [links below right]. It's from another era, so take that into account, but also realise it was only Robert Johnson playing one acoustic guitar. The sound he gets out of it is pretty special. I ended up devouring every piece of music and story I could find about Johnson and I understand why Clapton was so inspired by this legend. Awesome stuff.

  74. toby2k75

I really wish there was footage of this performance. If there is why havent i found it..? Lol 3 of the best at their best. Still sad about the passing of Ginger Baker but he lived a hell of life and will always be remembered as one of the pioneers and a true legend. If there was a Mt.Rushmore of drummers, ginger is on that mountain hands down. RIP Ginger Baker blessings and condolences to his entire family and close friends. Crazy how clapton is the only one left.

  75. J Silva

.... HI EVERYBODY, GALS & LADDIES, ... THIS SONG WAS WRITTEN BY THE GREAT R O B E R T J O H N S O N A BLACK BLUES GUITARIST WHO DIED ( WAS KILLED ?? ) WHEN HE WAS ONLY TWENTYSEVEN (27 ) YEARS OLD, ONE OF THE F I R S T - IF NOT THE FIRST - 27s FOLLOWED BY MUSICIANS AS BRIAN JOHNES OF THE STONES, JIMI, JANIS, JIM MORRISON ETC.ETC. ... CLAPTON ONCE IN AN INTERVIEW SAID THAT AS A YOUNG MAN, WHEN BEGINNING TO PLAY GUITAR, HE COPIED EVERY LICK / MOVE ( SORRY BUT I´M NO GUITARIST MESELF) OF WHAT HE HAD HEARD ON ROBERT JOHNSONS RARE RECORDINGS ... THE RESULT OF HIS HARD WORK YOU CAN HEAR ON CLAPTONS EARLY RECORDINGS E.G: WITH "CREAM" AND LATER ON ON THE PHENOMENAL RECORDINGS OF "DEREK & THE DOMINOS" WITH 4 MUSICIANS IF I RECALL IT CORRECTLY INCLUDING THE UNFORTUNATE J I M G O R D O N WHO ON ACID KILLED HIS OWN MUM AND MOST PROBABLY WILL SPEND THE REST OF HIS DAYS IN THE MADHOUSE ... LISTEN TO "DEREK & THE DONMINOS" LIVE AT THE FILLMORE (EAST OR WEST ??) AND YOU´LL LOVE IT, YOU´LL JUMP WITH JOY WITH ERIC ON TOP OF HIS GAME AND ON TOP OF HIS SMACK-ABUSE, ESP. WHEN PLAYING HIS SOLOS ON "IT GOTTA GET BETTER IN A LITTLE WHILE" WHICH ARE UNSURPASSED TO THIS VERY DAY .. THE COMPLETE BAND THEN WAS ON ACID, SMACK, ALCOHOL, EVERYTHING IN THE BOOK, AND CONSEQUENTLY DIDN´T LAST LONG ... REGARDS FROM D E R R Y NORTHERN IRELAND ... GOD BLESS ...
