Crass - Punk Is Dead Lyrics
Yes that's right, punk is dead,
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head.
Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors,
Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters.
CBS promote the Clash,
Punk became a fashion just like hippy used to be
And it ain't got a thing to do with you or me.
Movements are systems and systems kill.
Movements are expressions of the public will.
Punk became a movement cos we all felt lost,
But the leaders sold out and now we all pay the cost.
Punk narcissism was social napalm,
Steve Jones started doing real harm.
Preaching revolution, anarchy and change
Well I'm tired of staring through shit stained glass,
Tired of staring up a superstars arse,
I've got an arse and crap and a name,
I'm just waiting for my fifteen minutes fame.
Steve Jones you're napalm,
If you're so pretty (vacant) why do you swarm?
Patti Smith you're napalm,
You write with your hand but it's Rimbaud's arm.
And me, yes I, do I want to burn?
Is there something I can learn?
Do I need a business man to promote my angle?
Can I resist the carrots that fame and fortune dangle?
I see the velvet zippies in their bondage gear,
The social elite with safety-pins in their ear,
I watch and understand that it don't mean a thing,
The scorpions might attack, but the systems stole the sting.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.
PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD. PUNK IS DEAD.

Crass passed the message, then the message was sent n the rest of punk w/out it became dead ....
then ensued an argument “punk is dead” “no punks not dead” “punk is dead” “no punks not dead” “punk is dead” “punks not dead”
"you write with your hand but it's Rumbaud's arm". Maaaaan!!! Pretty poetry
Sound like old scool punk
Yes thats right..
True punk!))
Steve Ignorant dropping some bars and dissing phony people before Hip hop exists
Just a little after Ian Dury had done it ,although the English style of it can be traced back as far as the music hall days around 1860 ,it wasnt a new concept in the 1970s .
for some reason every time I hear this I imagine him as a cartoon rat
Bullshit crass☠️
who the fuck cares...
Jesus is dead
Punk is dead. It was hijacked by whiny white, liberal, Marxist, conservative bashing, sjw antifa types. They are fucking hypocrites. They say they hate the system yet vote for democrats, they say they hate wars yet loved Obama, they tell you to “think for yourself” but come down on you when you’re not a liberal, they say they hate the government but believe in socialism/communism, and they hate capitalism even though they profit off of it. Fucking posers
Pop punk is what killed punk
Yes f### green day
Punks not dead
It's in rehab
Despite what many "punks" think, pop punk didn't kill punk. Elitist punks with their long list of rules killed punk. Crass probably hates all these whiny entitled punk gatekeepers far more than they would hate Green Day.
Punk is dead when used as a government tool.
Punk s not dead, and most of the other movements not too, or will find them in new movements. But system and money s too fast .. like a deadley extending infection our society.
They didn't give a fuck that badly the song's tempo just gets faster as the song progresses
big fat punkrockers, still alive!
Punk is how you live your life. It has nothing to do with the music. Therefore punk isnt a style. "There is no style, except for overkill, if that's a style" -Kickboy Face
Should have stuck with Peanutbutter. It's the people's people people persons
punk is.........suck my fucking fuck you twat.
Punck,s not dead
Still dead.
And is still dead to this day. Police in riot vans surrounding a pub with punks drinking on tables outside. There to protect "the punks" from the general public?

Contradictory, no Clash, no 'protest song'. Pompous twats in denial.
No it’s not. It’s alive thru cassette and vinyl
Joe Walsh brought me here.
I think I speak for everyone when I say. FUCK YOU POLICE SCUM
Tru dat
Yep. Deader than dead. Brilliant tune.
All people do is argue on whos more punk or whos a poser and is punk a music genre or not
punk is anarchic drive converted into simple music, it lasted for a short time it's dead end of story your stupid because you argue against these people's right to have a calm debate you are pro-censorship you are a conformist fascist youth of today.
what a song
this is ironically the most punk song of all there next to Kill the Poor
We don't need punk anymore, the DIY "philosophy" is more alive and realised than ever and now anyone can say anything they want, it's easy to make music and art in general and there is always someone willing to give attention to any type of art(some types of art get more attention than others tho) all thanks to the internet, i'd say punk as a social movement is dead(as it should be) but it is still alive as an artistic movement.
So yea, in most parts of the western world the punk movement isn't needed anymore.
Punk is not only about diy. The society is still fucked up, and as long as that is the case, punks will have stuff to fight against.
Punk an artistic movement? Damn, indeed it is dead.
Another way of saying Punks Not Dead
this song defines punk rock.
I still wear my crass t shirt.
cadê os br crl
Punks not dead, it's just back underground now. You just have to look.
@Ziyo C.M. wow. Because having a very strict rulebook for what music can be classified as punk is totally a punk thing, despite punk being against rules
Buried deep stays buried still ... Punk is rotting in its grave where jello left it.
You man the new social clubs? Nah mate. Pass.
The true original scene is dead. You can still play the music but the feeling of it being fresh and created is dead you cum dumpster.
Leave Steve Jones alone, he's alright.
He is a fucking bellend
Anarchy can` t die
Regular punk is dead, but Hardcore is still alive underground, albeit
its sort of like a rap song
No, just no.
@John Smith shut up virgin
how about we shut up about the death of punk and enjoy the music and the subculture?
I think Crass would have liked trump. you say "nono" but think a minute...Trump is the ultimate anarchist, rolling into something thats broken, and tearing it down to fix it. Steve Ignorant, Donald trump...kinda the same.
Trump is a Trumpist.
This is borderline AnTiFa, but it muscles it's way in eventually....brushes you just enough to pop em in the jaw. They know they fucked up. That's the test in life. Youth gets the best of you, then shits out the rest. I hope you're a late bloomer, baby;) save your energy for the next concocted war. It might be race., religion, culture...who knows?! All I know is I hope my hair looks good when I get capped in the head. Yes, sir.
Punk isn't dead; it just switched sides.
Miley Cyrus is the new punk.
i like exploited's response punks not dead yet there are a few underrated punk underground bands today
names please
@hornswoggle lover39 ......................................................NON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like Malcolm mclarens response he said rock n roll was good when it was for teen angst then the 60s came and it became music then it was boring.. Same happened to punk only difference is punk stood for more then teen angst so the loss is greater.
@soundeagle Exactly. Sick of people claiming that people who can't find rock bands (and punk bands) are not trying hard-enough.
punk is a dead horse
FAKE NEWS
it only smells that way
quality comment
I'm wearing polo. would do anything for an armful, !love the Libertines and ooze punk.
punks not dead, it may manifest itself but the spirit still lives, punk is a philosophy and way of life so when people say punk is what you want it to be, they aree wrong.
you mean anarchy. punk was never a philosophy it was a shitty coined term to describe bar rock. the word punk is contradictory to what these bands like crass stood against which was the establishment. The only philosophy closest to that is anarchy
the guy below said it best...definition of punk...perfection. I would also like to add as a shitty bass player,...every song they ever wrote...even the weird long wailing ones by eve iibertine ..always had a perfect bass line...every damn time.
I am a punk and tbh crass is total shit
Punk is not dead it still lives in its d.i.y , underground, creative, anarchist/Anti establishment/socialist/comunist/anti political or whatever you are believing in form. But i wish the comercialistic side of punk would die out. Mainly the American maior label colectors box sell cool merch streepunk/poprock scene with other words....
fuck socialists communists and "anarchists"
entropy rules all
do what you like
im over it

CRASS LYRICS
"Punk Is Dead"
Yes that's right, punk is dead,
It's just another cheap product for the consumers head.
Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors,
Schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters.
CBS promote the Clash,
But it ain't for revolution, it's just for cash.
As he sucked from the system that had given him his name.
Conservative is the new punk..get behind loving your country.
Gene Clark- I'm a Metalhead/Punk and I voted for Trump its to bad that modern punks don't don't see how evil the democrat party really is, more government = more fascist.
Damn right, I wish more were sensible like you.
That is the dumbest shit I ever heard.
Can we stop the horse shit about punk being about individuality. You can't form a movement if you don't have any criteria. I'm not saying "punks dress punk" I'm saying there is punk ethics and a punk culture that shouldn't or put aside in the name of "keeping the scene alive"
all these comments are annoying, but crass will always be great
PUNK, IS, DEAD!
this song sounds like folk punk lol Exploited - Punk is NOT Dead!
exploited killed punk also they appeared on TOP OF THE POPS what an utter disgrace.
Good song! But I see poser punks comments XD (I mean The Crass "followers"). The song its the point of view of Crass band. In my opinion, For me use a Anarchy symbol because you're a "true punk" (or poser punk because It's not a true anarchist, and a real punk not always to be a anarchist or anticapitalist, also other punks are nazi, communist, socialist, and etc. No All punks to be anarchist, ya know, other punk bands are comercial, its ok because all bands have rights to do all something. Punks not have rules, its my opinion.
A lot of anarchy has ties with socialism
P U N K I S D E A D
Punk's not dead. It's just a Re-animated corpse that will wander around to consume and influence many minds that listen and understand.
don't talk out of your fucking arses, you probably weren't even there back then. You know fuck all so shut up
Best grouep in the world you stupid analphabet! Check your history!
fuck the clash, after their first album (which was decent) they helped create pop punk
that's rather dense of you. The Clash just did what any of hundreds of other people did. They played songs they liked to play. The people who "made pop punk" who I would suppose are your intended targeted culture of people, would be all the popular culture people , who for some reason were already keen on an interest in punk. It is them who walked over from clear pop music to their first taste of punk attitude and culture. What you're doing here is just shooting a gun off at the first thing that comes to mind, without any real thought into the tiers of effect happening. Shit like that gets whole villages killed at the political level. No need to go bazookers on me, since it's rather expected of you now.
so your mad they created the descendents
is u dumb
ya, Clash is defenetly not Punk. I mean they knew their instruments. Can't be punk.
PUNK IS DEAD!!!
cant understand a word
Ian susman If you think that's bad, try listening to "I like Hardcore boys" by Limp Wrist, i didn't understand a single word, even with the lyric sheet right infront of me
but that baseline....
I really wanna hear Crass'es opinion on The Clash. I know they diss them a bit here but i would like to hear a broader opinion from Crass about The Clash music-wise.
+Stormy Molnjavichen Steve Ignorant (on vocals) is a Clash fan. He saw the Clash play live and immediately decided to form a punk band. Google it.
This despite their lyrics from "White Punks on Hope."
@danielscissorhands I guess Crass were a bit disappointed in the direction The Clash were heading. They maybe thought it was to commercial?
A lot of punk bands at the time were disappointed with the success found by The Clash. Today, you're likely to find most punks don't like The Clash because they weren't there when they weren't so big and so now all they see is a commercial, safe-for-school version of punk, but back in the day, every punk band in the world looked up to The Clash.
I obviously wasn't there during that time either mind you but I spend a lot of my free time reading interviews and going into the ethos of these sub cultures, so I've done my research.
I can't say I agree. Sure, the later works of The Clash are easy to see in mainstream media, but that doesn't stop people going back and checking the first couple of albums, which were amazing, and reading about the band when they started, or watching videos of their live performances - punks are such history nerds after all. The common comment you'll hear about The Clash is "First albums are good...later ones suck!"
I heard all the later stuff when growing up and hated the band, it wasn't till I checked out the first albums did I start to like them...even though I find Strummer a bit of a hypocrite.
Everyone I know likes The Clash, or at least their early work, whether they are 14 (I work with kids) or my own peers (35-45), none of us were there at the time (obviously).
I think it also really depends which sub-group of punks you talk to. The old school and '77 lot tend to like The Clash, the crusties, anarcho-punks and a lot of the Hardcore kids tend not to.
Just my experience and opinion....now, the amount of people who hate Crass is another subject! :)
RIP punk
I always think of my goofy punk brother Damage OIing and Pogo Dancing to this song lol
PUNK IS NOT DEAD YOU SHIT
Kind of in a way, So they say; Furthermore, true punks say f_ck Green Day!
listened to crass since I was 13
Punks... siempre quejandose xD
\m/
+Natalia Brito NO ENTENDES LA VIDA =)
I'd agree that the pistols sold out but I'm not so sure the Clash did. Yes thdy went to a big label, but In doing so they were able to reach more people. Strummer's lyrics continued to promote socialism into their last 2 albums, and later in his career he headlined the rock against the rich festival organised by London class war.
+Jacob Elliman Yeah The Clash sold out.
Look punk does not equate to socialism. Punk is about being punk over anything and it's beyond politics. Punk=a street urchin piece of shit. That's what punk is.
Yeah it's associated with anarchism but it's also associated with nazis. The Clash never sold out their will to spread their beliefs but they sold out what punk is. They stopped being a punk band early on. Does Rock The Casbah sound like a punk song to you? Fuck no.
Rock the casbah is on their 5th album though. London calling and the first album are some of the best punk lps ever.
sex pistols sold at years after they broke up.
mille merci
And just today we find that the sex pistols are lending their image and name to virgin's new line of credit cards...Steve was right
@Clint Irwin What" myths surrounding the bands formation", I'm talking about Lydon lending his own persona for profit (tv ads etc), when all those years he preached against the consumerism system.
As a matter of fact Crass is not even my favourite band if you ask me, it's just that sometimes I am intrigued by some comments, and my argumentative side wants to debate with another human being somewhere on the planet, just for the sake of challenging my own beliefs..nothing personal.
@francisco guevara what Lydon has done recently has no bearing on what he did in the past. Anarchy for the UK is not, in fact about anarchy in the UK. That is Zen. "Don't know what I want but I know how to get it" is totally like a Zen koan. Crass is dogmatic anarcho syndicalism, the sort of thing that graduate students and teenagers think is deep, but is actually rote and the politics of privilege.
@Clint Irwin I'm sorry Clint but Zen should not be defined. You've tried to look clever and ended up making a contradiction in terms.
@Sam Hill You are now trying to look superior on the internet. Get an original thought
@Sam Hill Cheap pedantry to look superior on the internet is not very Zen, Sam. Go back and try again.
fuck the government?
De Potter M. Is that a question? Assuming it is because of the “question mark”. Lol
punk is not dead, be assured.
Punx not dead me and my friends just saw asking Alexandria and there were a bunch of punx there me included get a clue posers
+Lo Juventino conformity isnt very punk rock of you
@Lenny V you are wrong, pop "punk" is listened by conformist teenagers
@Lo Juventino just because thsts the majority doesn't mean you have to be a dick about which taste in music is better. It's music and it makes people happy to listen to it in their own ways. You saying "only real punks..." makes you a bigger conformist than them since you believe punks, /anarchists/, have to follow /rules/.
@Lenny V i didn't say people mustn't listen to pop punk, but i don't like it
@Lo Juventino whatev
*Insert generic argument about how punk is this and that and is alive or dead*
@***** none of those are punk or have been punk. only sex pistols
@Aske Floppykat I love Green Day and I don't believe there is such a thing as "real punk" but I honestly gotta back up @***** on this one.
i completely agree/disagree because reasoning
I'd rather insert my penis..inside you Rach
zimshowfan " I don't believe that punk music and ideology are necessarily incompatible with mainstream existence [...] I see no reason why you can't make it big doing what you love AND still maintain your personal beliefs and your sense of identity". Then the term "punk" doesn't mean anything? 'cause it's basically being off mainstreams and doing their things... There's no such non-sense as "pop-punk", it's just bad pop-rock... That being said, punk spirit (cause it's about a state of mind ) didn't died, but evolved in it's expression... obviously hardcore comes to mind.
Friends, Crass should not categorize as " punks " They never were. They were anarchists and music while it was much like the punk era, why were not punk. Read the history of them and what they said.
Punk is dead.
I dunno, i read and watched steve say he wanted to start a punk band which he went to penny about the band.
It is Anarcho-Punk
Anacho-PUNK
I like The Germs more
ANOK4U2.. :)
I will always like the idea that punk introduced me to but I got to agree with them punk is dead and it was raped by most of the people who say it's not dead, because the way I see it punk used to stand for something but now its a fashion
It was dead back in 1980, how dead is it now, 34 years later? It's corpse is gone cause the necrophilliac that is ''fashion'' dug it up and fucks it to this day.
Legalize murder
Peanutbutter isn't dead
@Arsonist Oi very true
It was live in the mid to late 70's. My parents saw the pistols. After that it was pretty dead. Though I do give credit to some 80's bands.
Lord Jarvis *1984
I had sex once.
twice more then me.
Personally, at this point I doubt sex even exists.
are you my dad?
Incel fantasies
punk is an illusion
What this song really talks about, IMHO, is the moment when punk became commodified. It is the cunning nature of Capitalism that it commodifies anything that critiques it.
The Diggers did a similar thing, when the summer of love was going sour, they had a performance funeral called "Death of a hippy, birth of a free man."
I very much believed, in the early eighties, that punk had died, And the stage of it I had been involved in pretty much had. But look how it springs up again in strange places. Free Pussy Riot!
pussy riot is a CIA sockpuppet
pussy riot fucking sucks. throw them in the gulag
I literally wrote a paper this past year or so on this exact topic. Although I didn't cite Crass (admittedly, I should have), I talked about how punk became the very thing it tried to rebel against. The mainstream co-opted punk rock and took it for its own. Capitalism made a profit out of punk rock, the ideologies behind it, and the movement itself. Punk has never the same after the fact. Never mind that Malcolm McLaren literally orchestrated the whole "punk rock lifestyle" with the Pistols. It was all just a cheap facade with no real impact. That's probably why you can hear bands like Clash, Ramones, and others in TV commercials and whatnot. The commodification of punk rock may not just be an effect of capitalism doing what it does best, but really in how weak and marketable the whole movement actually was.
