Cranberries, The - Yeat's Grave Lyrics

Silenced by death in the grave
William Butler Yeats couldn't save
Why did you stand here
Were you sickened in time
But I know by now
Why did you sit here?

In the grave
In the grave
In the grave
In the grave

(Why should I blame her
That she filled my days with misery
or that she would of late have taught to ignorant men most violent ways
Or hurled the little streets upon the great
Had they but courage equal to desire?)

Sad that Maud Gonne couldn't stay
But she had Mac Bride anyway
And you sit here with me
On the isle Innisfree
And you are writing down everything
But I know by now
Why did you sit here

In the grave
In the grave
In the grave
In the grave

William Butler...

(Why should I blame her
Had they but courage equal to desire..)

William Butler...

I'm going to Irealnd in May to see Maud Gonne and Macbrides history. Kilhamian gaol, her grave itself and arbor hill where John is. William Butler Yeats is too far away in Innisfree

When I was a kid, 13 maybe 14 years old my brother showed me this band and this song and Ridicolus Toughts are still my favorites. I changed thru years but this is the only constant! The Cranberries <3

I love this song for Dolores' voice as well as the memories of learning by rote Yeats's "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" aged 12 years. One of the poems that gave me my love of words. Here is a recording from the Poetry Archive of Yeats reading his work and explaining its origins: https://www.poetryarchive.org/search/site/lake%20isle%20of%20innisfree

What is Inistee? Uh, ok. Thanks for posting a great song, but I must say, we don't need a written announcement for every single sound the song makes? Thank you, again, though. Great song, and beautiful pictures.

    Life , a fleeting moment
We catch a glimpse, or a narrow vision
Just wide enough to pass through
But not enough to fully see where we are traveling to
Even less from where we have come
On an arc outside our control

A voice, a soul, breathes new clarity,
Lends new meaning,a centre that holds,
    A reason to celebrate, a moment's joy

    Something small,with irrepressible energy,
    burns brighter, then burns out,
she has awoken from this slumber,
    the dreams were real

Cranberries was the only band I listened to when i was about 13. I knew every song there is, and i needed them so much. It feels a little weird now, I turned out a jazz / soul kind of person, but still there's something about Cranberries I love a lot even now.

    b.... b....

That means that you have matured musically, when you can love music which is the complete opposite of the sound of the other. Grown ears my friend. Salutes. Blues man and Cranberries lover.

And Maud Gonne refused Yeats' marriage proposal, and was also a major revolutionary.

    a.... c....

It is said that Maud told W.B. that the world would thank her... As his pain would create his art...

  39. J.... L....

    John Butler Yeats,, R.I.P.

    J.... L....

Jose Luis Rodriguez I respect your comment, but isn't it "William Butler Yeats"? I'm probably wrong though.

  44. R.... N....

    Dear Scathach113!
You did a very good video to this song ;-) thanx

  45. b.... ....

it's morrigan ,shes from the celtic mythology, but maude gonne stole yeats heart but denied his love, when he was rejected he even proposed to her daughter( him an old man and the daughter only a child). maude gonne married john macbride (who was executed in the easter rising) and their son sean had a large part to play in irish independence. sorry to go off the point but i LOVE history.

    b.... ....

banana I was wondering what the story was behind this was. Thank you.

  46. a.... ....

is it Maude Gonne? or Morgan? the godess of war. who drives men to violent acts.

    a.... ....

amyhuk Maude Gonne I think. I _think._

    a.... ....

Maud gonne was the woman from a similar anglo-Irish background and who Yeats loved, but she did not reciprocate this love and married Sean McBride, one of the rebels in the 1916 rising hence "she had McBride anyway".

  47. B.... ....

Reminds me how some persons and occasions can be perfect.... and can't last forever :(

  48. S.... ....

@rionaparsons1 yeah, I know... All my videos have a bunch of mistakes in them, but I'm just way too lazy to fix em all :)

  49. b.... ....

head's up it's Inisfree not inistee, inisfree is a small island in lough gill, im pretty sure it is a crannog actually. just saying :)

  50. c.... ....

Pretty, but the words to 'No Second Troy' (the spoken bit of poetry) are incorrect. It should read "WHY should I blame her that she filled my days
With misery, or that she would of late
Have taught to ignorant men most violent ways,
Or hurled the little streets upon the great.
Had they but courage equal to desire?"

  51. M.... ....

i can't help listening to this song!

  52. T.... ....

il y'à une personne qui est sourde!

  53. T.... ....

    great song...bad spelling.

  54. T.... P....

I would die without the cranberries in my life !

    T.... P....

glitterdust40 Dolores passed away today :(.

  55. G.... ....

one person lacks courage equal to desire

  56. d.... b....

no dude yer video is perfect,

  57. L.... ....

the reading in the middle is from the 1st five lines of a poem "no second troy" that is basically yeats bitching about how maud gonne, the girl he spend 20+ years trying to get (they finally did it in 1908, like 15 some odd years into it). he ended up proposing to her about 4 times, each time no. and he also proposed to her daughter. and then he married some other girl. just lol

  58. S.... ....

lol, me neither for the most part. Its really just a tribute to the Irish poet W.B. Yeats, with a few things about his life (and apparently death, too... :P)

  59. 4.... ....

I love this song. But, i don't get it...

  60. I.... ....

    EPIC!!!!

  61. S.... ....

Same here, and I totally agree that this is one of their best : )

  62. S.... ....

Definatly my favorite Cranberries song =)
