Cowboy Junkies - Fairytale Lyrics

There's a rock and a field and a dirty sky.
I'm still as corpse, I'm content as a bride,
Thoughts of you and those flyin' shoes
All around me.

One wrong step and it's a long way down
So I triple check the hand holds, stand on firmer ground,
But it's not so easy when the whole mountains
Coming down on you.

So we wait for the morning when we'll stumble on the truth.
Probably fail to recognize it, as we're digging at its roots,
The sorrow and the anger that we've sown
In the fields all around us.

Hey little princess, hey little pea,
Come down from your tower and dance with me.
Yah you're the fairest one in the land.
Try on this glass slipper and give me your hand.

There's a rock and a field and a collapsing sky.
I'm precious as a snowman, fragile as a lie,
Thoughts of you and those flyin' shoes
All around me.

I'm afraid of the anger of the hard twisted heart
That beats in the chests of those that are caught
In the ruins of the lives of those
All around them.

I'm sick of the blood and I'm sick of the bleeding,
The effort it takes just to keep on dreaming
Of better days, and better ways
Of living.

Hey little princess, hey little pea,
Come down from your tower and dance with me.
Yah, you're the fairest one in the land.
Try on this glass slipper and give me your hand.

Hey little princess, hey little pea,
Come down from your tower and dance with me
Yah, you're the fairest one in the land.
Try on this glass slipper and give me your hand.

So we wait for the morning when we'll stumble on the truth.
Probably fail to recognize it, as we're digging at its roots,
The sorrow and the anger that we've sown
In the fields all around us.... The truth is the sorrow and the anger we have sown all around us.

    Jeff Byrd is simply amazing.

Whenever I hear just about any of their songs I always think what is wrong with people and the music industry why isn't this a number one smash?

This song makes the hairs on my back stand and sends chills up & down. Every time I hear it. It tells the story that I am just finishing. A Texas story/screenplay. “Fairytale” inspired my opening scene as a bleak grey morning begins in Austin, Texas. It is not the Fairytale Austin images we see but the murky underbelly, marginalized, poor & homeless. The side no one wants to see. I love the song because, like the story, it presents 2 themes. The mistakes, bad choices, hopelessness of life at times and then you turn it around offering promise even hope. “Jorge Heads West” portrays the trials, missteps & helplessness only to discover that there is hope, truth, and maybe even redemption. Thank you Cowboy Junkies.....very much.

+Thomas Keane I love it too. Its for me, a hard working mother, on the edge of losing it, under tremendous stress. She has to keep on the face of everything perfect, but underneath, so much ready to crumble under the weight of life, and her efforts are to do nothing more than make her daughter feel safe, secure, and not have to worry about the underlying anxiety. Her daughter is so precious, meaning everything to her. She said at a concert "This is to my daughter".
    What a monumental song.

Love this and their rendition of" Anniversary Song."  Absolutely wonderful.  This one sounds a little like Tom Waits "Heart of a Saturday Night."  Both allow their unique voices to come through aided by simple but the sweetest accompaniment.

Absolutely brilliant lyrics. No one writes songs like Michael and Margo. Among the best songwriters alive and certainly the most unique.
