Coverdale•Page - Whisper A Prayer For The Dying Lyrics

I hear the sound of distant thunder echo all around
I see the tragedy of young ones lying on the ground
I see the fathers' sons and daughters, I hear the mothers crying
Nothing left for me to do, whisper a prayer for the dying

Oh, oh, a prayer for the dying

The suffocating heat of jungles, burning desert sands
Where everything reminds you, you're a stranger in a strange land
The soothing words of politicians, those bodyguards of lies
While guardian angels waste their time and every mother cries

Oh, oh, a prayer for the dying, dying, dying
Oh, oh

Machine gun, battle cry
You pray to God when the bullets fly
The bombs fall like black rain
And all your dreams take you home again
Nothing but bad dreams

You can't read, you can't write
You're so scared, you can't sleep at night
You try to carry the heavy load
Walking down Armageddon road, oh, Armageddon road

I hear the sound of distant thunder echo all around
I see the tragedy of young ones lying on the ground
I see the fathers' sons and daughters, I hear the mothers crying
Nothing left for me to do but whisper a prayer for the dying

Oh, a prayer for the dying, dying
Oh, a prayer for the dying, baby, baby
Oh, a prayer for the dying, dying
Whisper a prayer for the dying, oh

You can't run, you can't hide
You can't show what you feel inside
You're going crazy, going insane
You know you'll never be the same again, no, no

Whisper a prayer for the dying, dying, dying, dying, dying, no, no
Armageddon road, Armageddon road, I'm walking down Armageddon road

  3. A.... C....

Anyone who likes Coverdale and Paul Rodgers should definitely check out Jimmy Dewar's work with Robin Trower as well

  4. b.... ....

Good until the upper register stuff then sounds like Brian Johnson and AC/DC.

  5. T.... S....

Nobody is going make it alive anyway. Pray for the dying. Thank you.

I think it's fair to say Jimmy "stole" this riff from Summerland by King's X.

The best of coverdale´s songs I've heard. A very good teamplay with page´s wonderful riffs.

  14. W.... B....

Bought this bad boy the day it come out. 285 watts per channel with my Pioneer SX1280 blasting through Klipsch corner horns.

    W.... B....

Really? that amp is rated at 185 wpc into 8 ohms. How are your ears after that klipsch rasp? Only for the brave.

  29. T.... D....

This and Fate of Nations are by far the best post Zep Albums. Almost as if they were competing (a rock c*ck measuring contest)

    An Amazing Work!!!

  31. l.... ....

And every mother cries Whoo ooo oooo ohhhhhh

  32. B.... T....

    9 Bieber fans.

  33. C.... H....

I almost consider this a Zep album. It's "that" good...and so Zep like on so many songs. Page was at his brilliant best here, but Coverdale was equally as great here on vocals and lyrics. Don't think Plant could have done any better.

    C.... H....

Plant would have ruined it anyway.... Turned it into his solo sounding stuff like walking into clarksdale

    C.... H....

This song is good but I kept waiting for them to segue into Kashmir.

    C.... H....

Charlie Haze anything Page touches is guaranteed to go platinum ‼️

    C.... H....

Some of the best song writing on this LP from JP since....well you know..

    C.... H....

I disagree! Although I did see Jimmy and Robert do Shake My Tree in Philadelphia. I was totally shocked!!!

  34. W.... W....

Sorry to hear that man, She's listening still with Bonzo!!

  35. r.... ....

I worked at a record store when this came out. I was in the back, checking in product, jamming the cd on the old boom box back there and the cd got stuck during the breakdown before the guitar solo. Took me 10 minutes to notice the same section being repeated over and over because it sounded good! LOL

  36. T.... N....

    Page found his form again.
great follow on from outrider....another forgotten masterpiece.

    T.... N....

    tony nickols,
yes he did, page played a thousand times better in the 90's than the 80's.

  37. a.... s....

    fucking awesome!

  38. m.... ....

TIMMY SCHULZ rip you will be MISSED 11/ 24/2016

  39. W.... a....

The year 1993 when this album came out..I ran off with my soon to be wife where we had our 21 year adventure of life together listening to this album...We had all of those years until she passed away in 2014 from cancer... I am alone now listening to this music that brought us together...I will never forget this album or my love

    W.... a....

Windwar attack Holy hell brother... that's powerful. I am so sorry for your loss. When this song/album came out i was listening as I left high school and left for basic training... it was stuck in my head the whole time... when i first deployed (Bosnia) I remembered the "stranger in a strange land" line, then later it came flooding back when the middle east came calling. All the memories, the innocence lost, All we can do is move forward...keep pushing forward brother...

    W.... a....

    God bless you Brother.

    W.... a....

Sorry for your loss mate, stay strong & keep on rockin'

    W.... a....

Uuh that hit like a sledge.

Wish you all the best brother, walk with God and let him smile upon you and give you what you need.

    W.... a....

I remember listening to this back then...I lost my girl too...was nobody's fault but mine tho

  40. H.... C....

Best track on the album IMHO

  41. A.... ....

    SOAD totally ripped this off

    A.... ....

    +Ryan Thompson Guitarist Aerials

    A.... ....

@Vojtech Frank it doesn't sound very similar!

    A.... ....

@iam Nobody it kinda does it just has a similiar progression and sound, it's faster and plays in background.

    A.... ....

@Vojtech Frank notes sequence is totally different

    A.... ....

Yes they ripped this off for Aerials.

  42. M.... P....

an awesome song was current to 1st gulf war. the album was just as good as led zeppelin 1.

    M.... P....

Wow really ? You're remembering a song with regard to a destructive fruitless murderous war?

    M.... P....

amadan9999 No just saying that was current to that time and conflict. Could be about Columbia and the FARC or Nicauragua or Israel. Your opinion. Not informed just full of lefty Propaganda.

    M.... P....

@MICKEY PERRY "lefty propaganda"?? Oh do elaborate

  43. B.... T....

Bought this CD when it came out. I blew the windows out of my house cranking this bitch up.

    B.... T....

Back again. Never gets old. Still got the SX1980 (285 watts per channel) blasting this bitch trough some Klipsch Corner Horns.

  44. E.... c....

The views don´t give this video justice. This was an incredible album.

  45. v.... ....

Some of the best wailing David has ever put to vinyl, and Jimmy with the usual classic riff. At 1:55 when it kicks into high gear I had goosebumps the first few times listening to it. Always been a huge fan of both guys, and they did a very good record. Rumor has it the reason Jimmy did it was to piss Robert off because he didn't want to reunite at the time and as we know Robert doesn't care for David Coverdale (that's putting it mildly.) Whatever the reason the album is great.

  46. E.... C....

interesting fact - Coverdale and Page dedicated this song to the victims on the war in ex-Jugoslavia.

    E.... C....

Another good one about this is Pick Up The Bones by Alice Cooper

  47. J.... S....

I was listening to this one in the streets of Paris, back in 1993.

This track, like several off this LP, is Led Zeppelin quality.

Strange thing, is that, here, in 2015, the lyrics seem even more relevant.

"You pray to God as the bullets fly."
That's physical: look up combat footage from Syria, etc.

Musically, Lyrically, this is very powerful song.

This one should have been a Led Zeppelin song.

Whisper a Prayer for the Living,
    Prespos

    J.... S....

+John Scott Es que Led Zeppelin tenía que haberse refundado con David Coverdale como vocalista en el 93

    J.... S....

    +John Scott i agree

    J.... S....

  48. b.... ....

Is it just me or does Coverdale sound a bit like Brian Johnson in parts of this song?

    b.... ....

+bringbackdeano Cierto, eso es lo que atrae

    b.... ....

    bringbackdeano yes he does!

    b.... ....

    Lol, YES---100%

  49. p.... f....

this is the only song off the album i dont like

  50. M.... F....

An epic album by these guys, and I really like the sign on the cover! Sort of showing what it's all about :-)

  51. T.... S....

It is a great song for sure. Page on guitar always makes everything all right.

  52. m.... ....

    sweet song!!!

  53. d.... s....

this is an awesome song  but i also like shake my tree    a robert plant cover vocals lol

  54. j.... k....

whole album from begining to end the best that robert plant missed out on

    j.... k....

james kennedy to me this is pages best post zeppelin work!!

  55. c.... 3....

Sounds like system of a down took this riff for aerials.

    c.... 3....

    Totally.

    c.... 3....

I hear it but its not the same riff they style is the same

  56. d.... s....

Thank god for Glenn Hughes teaching Coverdale The meaning of heavy vocals  he would still have the cherry voice of smoke on the water

    d.... s....

now Coverdale did not sing on the original version of Smoke on the water, and his earlier stuff was more varied than one might think

    d.... s....

@leppardsnake yeah  your right  i won`t take nothing away from his talents..  for sure  i think ian gillan was original smoke on the water singer  if i`m not mistaken..

    d.... s....

don s. You are correct...that and he was Jesus! His vocal work on Jesus Christ Superstar was amazing...

  57. r.... P....

give it up,,this is a Classic

  58. D.... ....

This is basically Chris Cornell - Seasons, but a bit heavier.

    D.... ....

    And better.

    D.... ....

    Sure thing...

  59. A.... P....

its like Im hearing Kashmir echo.

    A.... P....

this is because of Jimmy's guitar, but you must to admit - this song is badass

    A.... P....

    thats what I meant.

    A.... P....

Kashmir + DP's song Burn ==> this song

  60. b.... ....

    Awesome

  61. t.... i....

I remember an Mtv video of Coverdale/Page, and I didn't like it.  I never gave this album a chance,  and I got into Whitesnake with the 1987 album.

  62. C.... C....

    QUE TEMASO LPM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  63. E.... D....

At first, it sounds like Plant. Then at about 2 minutes in, it turns AC/DC style singing...then it sounds more like DC than before and then back to AC/DC. So, why are Led Zeppelin fans upset? Angus Young should be the one who's really pissed off at this.

    E.... D....

Ethan Davies Why would Angus be pissed? He was the guitar player

  64. a.... ....

My fave too from that album! Thanks for posting it.

  65. M.... ....

Awesome song , !!! listen to it loud !!

  66. J.... P....

    Genious

  67. J.... G....

Congrats to all of you that witness this.....to just a kickass song, with the bad ass Page..and a great Vocalist like DC!...I understand how Zep fans get sooo upset over this crap. I don't think DC sounds like Plant at all.......Page decided to play with a guy who could kick ass, and not give him an attitude....If it wasnt for DC...it would be 20 plus years that we heard from Page. Jimmy is very receptive...................Another note, Guns and Roses in Hall of Fame? axl blows. please.

  68. k.... ....

    This song is IMPRESSIVE.
    They're Myths.
    Legends.

  69. S.... R....

Fantastic musicians. Fantastic band. This is the very best of DC and Jimmy Page. They really got the best from each other on this album. An absolute bloody tragedy that they never followed it up with another album. Superb stuff!!

  70. B.... E....

Sounds like Page playing with AC DC!

  71. A.... T....

@7byseven I remember that. Was trying to find it and only came across this. It was damned fine work as well.

  72. O.... C....

    Bom pra caralho!!!!!

  73. P.... ....

@reddgrapes1 I disagree man, no drummer I've ever listened to matched Bonham's thunderness. Please understand I'm not saying Denny isn't good, his drumming fits the album perfectly, but he just doesn't have the power that Jonh Bonham had.

    P.... ....

As a drummer you also need to know what sound you want and how to create it with the pieces in your set.

  74. D.... H....

    fuck of soad aerials

  75. G.... ....

This reminds me of Soundgarden for some reason.

    G.... ....

    The Cult for me.

    G.... ....

    Tora Tora for me

  76. j.... ....

@Luxmaxnike Porra, a gente sempre toma no cu aqui né, mano? HASUHASU

  77. 7.... ....

I uploaded this in 2006 when YT was pretty much dead and it had some awesome war footages I collected, bastards made me remove it. If the quality isnt HD they shoudnt be allowed to remove it in my opinion.

  78. M.... ....

@LedWilde So I gave it back to both of you and 32 thousand other people :)

  79. L.... ....

@Slagnr no problem. i found one by ZEPPLINONE1. btw do you know where can i hear the song "The Only One" from jimmy's album "Outrider"?

  80. M.... ....

@Luxmaxnike They blocked this video in quite a few countries because of the copyright infringement. Brazil included. I'm really sorry.

  81. L.... ....

@Slagnr why i can't watch the vid of over now? i'm from brazil

  82. n.... ....

one of the best songever singed by Coverdale...and what a voice! wonderful song, SO UNDERRATED!

  83. P.... ....

I heard this song the first time when I was 19 or so. Loved the entire album, but on this song about 2:40 me and my friends used to joke Coverdale was singing "I'm a gaywad" or "I'm a gang lord".

Obviously, he's singing "Armageddon road", but...it was funny at the time.

  84. r.... ....

@Piclemania All due respect! Denny Carmassi does do quite the job belting out the THUNDER!! Peace!

  85. M.... ....

    MsKristineE5150-
Thank you so much for sharing this! I agree that this whole album is very underrated. Over Now & Easy Does It are my favorites, but this song kicks ass too! Jimmy Page is one of the best guitar players of all time. Hey Slagnr, I would love to hear anything about working this tour, or see any video you might have. Please keep me posted.

  86. m.... ....

Great song, voice and guitars matches perfectly

  87. T.... S....

    Divine !

  88. r.... j....

Great Track to close the album.

  89. k.... ....

beyond underrated !!! one of the 10 best of the 90's. let's be honest, kurt isn't holding jimmy's jock !! with all respect

  90. P.... ....

man alive! imagine if Bonzo were alive and played the drums in this album, his thunderous sound would make this track the most epic song of all time!

  91. p.... ....

It's so Good to see so many that love this Awesome Album. I remember seeing a bunch of Return Used Copies in Wherehouse Music back in 1993. I went ahead and bought my copy anyway. Great job on my part because I still Love it.

  92. r.... ....

Wow This song is unbelievable! LOVE IT!

  93. N.... ....

    This Album is Holy!

  94. r.... ....

My faith is restored , someone else gets this album

  95. S.... ....

Best song on the cd. The only one you could really compare to Led Zeppelin. The lyrics to all the other ones just sound like typical Coverdale....."my hard dick, and broken heart"

  96. M.... ....

@ultragoji1 Amen man. cant agree more. It's no accident everyone has a Nickelback sound. Its all formulated by the record industry..like regurgitated pig slop! It's also the reason few bands play solos or have an original sound. The record industry tell them what to play and how to sound. Guitarists back years ago would lock themself away in a room and just practice till their fingers bled. There are some great new bands out there but overall It seems more choose to take a shortcut .. pitiful

  97. M.... ....

Ya know what funny about this album? Is that I play it now for friends who consider themself music afficianados and their blown away by it. They always ask me "how could I of missed this album its so fokkin good song for song...If you look back at that time this, like many great ROCK albums were ignored by rock radio. Yes there were 2 songs on this album that got radio play. But it didn't get the credit it desrved only because they were too busy trying to shuv Nirvanna and Grundge up our azz..

  98. R.... P....

I had this cd... it disapeared, someone took from me.. :(
Great song, both are Gods of music.
