Country Joe And The Fish - The Fish Cheer / I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Lyrics

Gimme an F! F!
Gimme an I! I!
Gimme an S! S!
Gimme an H! H!
What's that spell? FISH!
What's that spell? FISH!
What's that spell? FISH!

Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men, Uncle Sam needs your help again
He's got himself in a terrible jam, way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun, we're gonna have a whole lotta fun

And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, next stop is Vietnam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die

Well, come on generals, let's move fast, your big chance has come at last
Gotta go out and get those reds, the only good commie is one that's dead
And you know that peace can only be won when we've blown 'em all to kingdom come

And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, next stop is Vietnam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die

Well, come on Wall Street, don't move slow, why man, this is war a-go-go
There's plenty good money to be made by supplying the Army with the tools of the trade
Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb, they drop it on the Viet Cong

And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, next stop is Vietnam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die

Well, come on mothers throughout the land, pack your boys off to Vietnam
Come on fathers, don't hesitate, send 'em off before it's too late
Be the first one on your block to have your boy come home in a box

And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, next stop is Vietnam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die

Country Joe And The Fish The Fish Cheer / I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Comments
  1. g.... ....

I remember listening to this when I was a wee lil kid in the early 80's and when I didn't want to be a member of the Moody Blues, I wanted to sing with these guys. I was like 5 or 6 yrs old, tops! ✌🏼

  2. L.... ....

this was the version (not necessarily performance) of the song that got the band banned from TV including the Ed Sullivan Show, before they even appeared on TV

  3. J.... O....

Saw them @ the Fillmore East, easily one of the better live bands, so much fun...Country Joe would scream gimme an F, a U, a C and a K, then he said what's that spell?? And then he would scream 'F*ck Who??? And two thousand stoned participants would yell, "F*CK YOU!" It was deafening. Great times.

  4. P.... ....

Trump pulled troops away from the border in Syria. The Dems want them to stay and be shot.

    P.... ....

He didn't bring them home. He just put them further into Syria to protect our oil interests and he plans on sending more troops over there so how is he any better???

  5. p.... h....

sadly, 50 years later, we're still arguing about many of these same issues that they were protesting back then. blows my fucking mind just how much people refuse to do anything of substance to change anything about this crazy world...

  6. E.... C....

The most important moment of the Woodstock festival.

  7. L.... S....

Where you during Woodstock 1969? I was in Navy boot camp in San Diego Company 522 ☮️

    L.... S....

Just turned seventeen. Went to Woodstock on the spur of the moment w/a couple of friends. Didn't do drugs. Just sat in the same spot for hours awestruck, listening to some of the best music I had ever heard.

  8. T.... B....

50 Years since: See at all the young people with a reasonable BMI; and where are the expensive tattoos? Now, without The Draft we citizens have mellowed into obese compliance. Protest songs are so..... historic. 2020, will voters swallow the same propaganda. How many kids in a box since 1969, even kids shot in schools not a war zone. What did we allow to happen to the USA? Are we Great.... Again? sigh, so many wasted choices

  9. K.... C....

God Bless Max Yasgur. This would have never existed if it weren't for him.

  10. J.... T....

I must say Country Joe has done quite well for himself as a progressive/communist. He, along with alot of other anti-war activists: Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Hanoi Jane ended up multi millionaires. Like Bernie Sanders/Joe Stalin/ Lenin/ all good communists. All there to tell everyone how to live, think, and be. As long as the money rolled in. Many of us at Woodstock had to grow up, me being one of them. I come here to see myself in the movie. Young and stupid. But I had a great time.

    J.... T....

Democracy has a right to exist , even if the people don't look like us. Would they also protest defending South Korea I believe they would. That's right, they were against the establishment of all material things.

  11. v.... B....

Rival concerts take place on either side of Venezuela-Colombia border, all for the best reunion ! VIETNAM ..!

  12. R.... B....

I had just entered the airport after landing at MIA Intl and a freaky guy passed with a wild effin haircut. I thought , I know that guy and
shortly after Barry Melton and Country Joe passed and I turned and screamed "give me and F and all there hands went up in the vee sign.

  13. R.... P....

If this doesn't give you chills, when they all stand and sing, you may be dead.

  14. R.... P....

This is the spirit we need in this country, again, now.

  15. Y.... ....

In 1970 I was 18 and kicked out of High School for 1. having long hair, 2. distributing SDS material and 3. singing this song in the hall. I knew I was A1 material (that's a draft classification, for you young punks too young to remember, that assures you are draftable) and death in vietnam was most definitely right around the corner for me. Turns out I was one stupid lucky SOB. Many weren't so lucky. Imagine, you young punks, what it must have felt like to be 18 and knowing you have no future, at least not one you have any control over, and a hell in vietnam is waiting for you. How many boys kissed their girlfriend goodbye and went to 'Nam without living to kiss another girl again. I still don't know what we were fighting for after these many years of study.

  16. K.... L....

    It's made in China

  17. J.... B....

I just finished the documentary of vietnam war in netflix. Man is so intense. You can´t help drop tears. From kennedy, johnson and nixon, all of them were so stupid, so stubborn and narrow minded. They didn´t care sending young men dying for a stupid reason. The moment when some soldiers throw their medals in washington is really strong, and the tears of the families, the black people who fought and back home were treated bad because of their skin colour. And at the end the monument who should tell us that stupid wars should be avoided. Vietnam, Corea, Irak, Panama, Siria and you name it. All because some greedy pigs want to get oil and treat people like slaves in those poor countries.

  18. J.... B....

Fuck Fuck Fuck those pigs who sent young men to die foolishly.

  19. L.... H....

THE BEST MOMENT BY FAR of the whole Woodstock film!! I love Country Joe!!

  20. V.... A....

What a genaration! We could scream the F word with proud. Today dear Paul McCartney just released a song called Fuh you...meaning "for you" and fans are protesting saying it is "dirty". Guess their minds are dirty. Being from that generation I suspected he did it on purpose. LOL And I love he did it. But it is sad to see people became so straight. Lucklly it is not everybody.

    V.... A....

Was it PC? Now we have one person who says it's right to see it or to hear it. Now name that guy who banned Baby It's Cold Outside? We were never so thin skinned before. How can so few control the majority? arghhh

  21. E.... v....

roll em up, light em up, smoke up

  22. S.... ....

    "Gimme an F!"

    S.... ....

  25. K.... H....

    Anti-draft. Anti-bras. Anti-war. Anti-establishment. It was pretty cool actually.

    K.... H....

K Hunt and then, later, many of them found Jesus.. Interesting fact.

    K.... H....

K Hunt way cool. I taught my kids this tune. Great for driving to protests. I still sing along...loud. And I call for boycotts, general strikes and calling the government.

  26. J.... T....

    Fabulous!!

  27. K.... H....

At 12, I slipped past the theatre attendant to view cinematic history.

  28. w.... ....

  29. C.... ....

Hahaha! A few years ago I dug out all my old records and played them. Should have seen my kids faces when I played this one! I thought their teeth were gonna fall out! (Mine has the full F.I.S.H. cheer at the beginning.)

Sunday, 17 August, 1969: Country Joe & The Fish Live @ Woodstock on day 3 of the festival performing "The "Fish" Cheer/I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag" https://youtu.be/dATyZBEeDJ4?list=PLJvqlH0Sf-sRSNWWxqe6xzwkVx9dFzy7R

  36. J.... K....

This is what is called a peaceful demonstration.

  37. I.... D....

    this is brilliant

  38. p.... y....

Muhammad Ali should've been on stage singing right along with him.If rap was out back then Ali could've did a rap version with this. Love this song!!!

  39. C.... M....

To Tate Thompson...Cheers dude, like your opinion, that's the great thing, we all are allowed to have them, as for spitting on the Vietnam Vets? naa that is one thing I didn't do that, never agreed. Here in Australia, our guys who went to Vietnam? we just thought sad for them, lots did not make it home alive, those that did/ were very damaged.

  40. C.... M....

A national anthem for us baby boomers who took part in the anti war moratorium marches...our baby guys having to fight this friggen war..

    C.... M....

It's funny, that your generation (my parents, mother was at Woodstock while my father was on his 2nd combat tour in vietnam), did all this protesting, had big ideas. Yet were the ones who spit on my father, protested him when he came home, and are the reason why country is in such deep trouble today and your generation has become more money hungry, careless, greedy and more corrupt than what you were against in your youth. My generation suffers (20's), suffer because of yours in many aspects. You guys dug us such a deep hole in everything it's not even funny. It's nothing personal against you, when I say you I mean baby boomer generation. That's the truth.

  41. T.... M....

The thumbs-down people don't know how to spell.

  42. p.... l....

and so sad aboui AGENT ORANGE, NOT just the guys from here, but sad for Vietnam cuz their land was permanently ruined, for what ??to kill ones not bothering us at all, sad for them too.

  43. V.... B....

Someone please write and sing about what's going on today. It's worse now than then.

    V.... B....

Don't need a song. Mainly because of the Vietnam era, the politicians got rid of the draft. They absolutely do not want people taking to the streets to question the motivation of their decisions. If there was a draft today, W. Bush never gets away with his Iraq invasion and occupation. Now with an all-volunteer army, you signed your name, you play the game. If you want to fight, enlist, if you want to stay in your parents basement and play video games, that's cool too. Maybe looking back, flower power seems rather hokey, but at least back then, young people gave a rat's ass about what was going on. They had to, their lives were at stake.

    V.... B....

Young people still do but most of them gets controlled by themselves with all the Ego traps in this world.
I know people can go their whole life not realizing they have had a mask on their face so long they can't even remove it without feeling like they lose their soul and whole being.
Thing is there is no soul or being in something that isn't real. That's just imitating a being or trying to be real.
Everything in the system reinforces the strengthening of alternate fake self.
Not as easy talking about stuff like this to anyone. Most people get so afraid of deep thinking they give me the expression of critical error too much information, shutting down to prevent hurting illusion of self.
Then after that they throw out something stupid like saying i'm a psychotic. To save their own Psyche.
Faak man sometimes i wish i could drop a LSD bomb on earth.

  44. G.... B....

whos the man that hugs joe at the end of the video he looks super familiar but I cant really put my finger on who it is, someone help! kind of looks like the guitarist from canned heat

    G.... B....

I thought it was Bill Graham.

  45. K.... L....

Thank you for uploading. Beautiful, we need more spirit like that, these days.

  46. l.... ....

great - thx for the upload...

  47. r.... t....

Oopsy. I mispoke. Sorry about that Joe.

  48. M.... B....

AND also may I add sarcastically thank you President Lyndon B. Johnson for escalating the war in Vietnam.

    M.... B....

what about kennedy and nixon, they were idiots too.

  49. M.... B....

Many people may be surprised to know Joe McDonald, was a fellow patriot, served three years in the U.S. Navy over in Japan.

    M.... B....

That's where he learned that we wage war for the imperialists.

    M.... B....

@Bill Garrity I fought against FARC Guerrilas my whole adult life, i've seen what those MTF commies do. its the same war but elsewhere. I have a lot, a LOT of respect for what the american soldiers did in Vietnam, but im not blind, i know about the war crimes and the political stuff... Forget about the imperialist bullshit. I live in Brazil and im a Brazilian combat vet, i have a whole different point of view.
    Sorry for my rusty english.

  50. r.... t....

Be the first one on your block to have yer boy come home in a box. Rip country Joe McDonald.

    r.... t....

    RIP??? McDonald is still alive.

    r.... t....

Roughly 50,000 Americans died in Vietnam. Over 25 million people have died of AIDS since Vietnam, Make love not war. Stupid fucking hippies.

    r.... t....

Jim Scribner this is an anti-war song and many millions more have died in wars than AIDS.have some respect.

    r.... t....

Jim Scribner 56,000 Americans died for no real reason

  51. L.... B....

    The good old days!

  52. B.... M....

I went to Vietnam 3 years after Woodstock so give me an F, give me a U, give me a C, give me a K. That says it all.

    B.... M....

Thank you Bobby and Jim for your service. My cousin and friends were in Nam also... You guys are heros!

    B.... M....

@Kevin Ferguson Most politicians are scumbags period including a lot of the ones I've voted for as the better alternative to even worse scumbags. Veterans tend to be less ought of touch with reality for the most part than politicians with no personal experience dealing with psychopaths trying to kill them since in that sort of situation being out of touch with reality lowers your odds of surviving long enough to go into politics of course. :)

    B.... M....

Jim Scribner you know, I could try to argue that those “stupid fucking hippies” didn’t all die of aids or drug overdoses, and were in fact trying to stop a conflict whose only product was bodies returned in coffins or with missing limbs and ruined minds.

But clearly you’d write me off as some leftist pinko (which is incorrect, I’m a libertarian), so let me point you in the direction of Major General Smedley Butler, two-time recipient of the Medal of Honor, who makes a pretty strong case for the notion that “war is a racket” and that his service was merely as a “hitman for Wall Street.”

    B.... M....

@Christian .Desrochers The day the draft ended, so did the protest. I guess they were not that dedicated to their cause. Perhaps if the Vietnamese looked more like us they might have thought defending an independent democratic nation that was allied with the US should be a no brainer . OK OK, I get it. William Calley , Kent State were all bad shit, but as many do I don't compare hippies with Charles Mansion. Shit I forgot , we were rapist too... those journalist just happened to forget reporting about the rapes on their campuses. Funny how a journalist gets beheaded and the whole world wants ISIS removed from the face of the earth at any cost. At any cost.Remember the photographer who showed a bullet going through the temple of VC suspect that didn't get a trial. That photographer forgot to take a picture the of dismembered women and children who were killed by the bastard. He knew a picture like that was not conducive to the cause of making us look bad . Did you cry when Jahadi John was killed without a trial? neither did I.

    B.... M....

Thank you for your service, and i really mean it

  53. M.... D....

''What's that spell?'' sampled many years later by Death in Vegas.

  54. w.... ....

I might be wrong about this but I believe the Fish weren't backing up Joe here. They needed someone to play they grabbed Joe gave him a guitar provided him with a rope for a strap and the rest is history.

    w.... ....

+wavygr hdo you know this /

    w.... ....

@blhwk42 I read a great book about Woodstock and also heard Country Joe interviewed  I lost book in house fire but I will see if I can verify it.

    w.... ....

@blhwk42 According to Wiki I am right. The back stage was chaos  without the electronics ready a lot of groups were stuck in traffic so after Havens or maybe later they grabbed C J M and threw him on stage. Later in the festival he performed with his band. Every band was schedule to play twice.

    w.... ....

Besides listen closely all you can hear is a guitar Joe and the crowd.

  55. m.... h....

"Evil flourishes when good men (and women) are silent."......Right thinking people should NEVER give up speaking out against the power/greed-mongers who have always controlled this world for their own ulterior motives - 'love of money is the root of all evil'. ......At least now the people have the internet through which the voices of ordinary people can be heard globally. ...............Only if the politicians think something is an issue that could determine whether or not they are re-elected they will do something about it.

    m.... h....

Everybody loves money and always will. That's why the Commies murdered millions of people to steal their money for themselves, isn't it? That's why rich people with lots of money pay good money for killing Commies. That's why all those stupid fucking hippies too chickenshit to kill Commies for rich people ended up as prostitutes and dope dealers with massive death rates from AIDS, over doses, and gang wars and no retirement plans aside from being gang raped by faggots in prison without any internet access at all let us note.
