Country Joe And The Fish - Rock & Soul Music Lyrics

Hmm...
We'd like to take this opportunity now to play you a little thing that we learned from Mr. James Brown the King of soul music.
Now this ain't soul music, mind you, this is rock music. But it's got soul to it, if you can dig that.
And now the band would like to play a new riff they just learned, we call a sockin'-it-to-you riff. And it-uh goes something like this.
Alright — are you ready boys?
Let me hear you do it one time just once c'mon
Huh! Ah that's it, do it again!
Huh! Oh come on!
Oh it feels so good, do it again!
Alright, come on! Huh!
One more time, come on! Huh!
Now let me hear you do it two times if you can. Huh huh!
Alright, that's good, do it again! Huh uh.
Hmm alright, come on. Huh.
Oh yeah, do it again now. Huh uh.
Feels so good, once more! Huh uh.
Oh let me hear you do it three times now, huh!
Ah yeah, come on!
Alright! Four times now!
Ahhhh! come on now.
Oh, when you hold me, ah
Oh, when you kiss me
Oh, when you love me
It's alright, outasite,
Ahhh! you know that you're just d-d-d-d-d-dynamite!
Huh!
I guess you've heard all about rock and roll,
You've heard about the music that they call soul.
Well, I'm here to tell you what I've been told
'Bout the brand new music called the rock & soul.
Rock & soul yeah, that's the music got you walkin' down the street
Clappin' your hands, kickin' your feet, (Rock & soul)
Jumpin' up and down oh it's so groovy, oh rock & soul, yeah.
Now everywhere I go, you know that it's always understood
Rock and soul music is doggone good.
Now everywhere I go, from Kansas City up to Maine
Rock and soul music's driving people insane.
Rock & soul, yes it's the music got you walkin' down the street
Clappin' your hands, kickin' your feet, (Oh rock & soul)
Jumpin' up and down, oh, it's so groovy, rock & soul, rock on, yeah, huh!
Ha!
Now everywhere I go you know that it's always understood,
Rock and soul music is doggone good.
Now everywhere I go, from Kansas City up to Maine
Rock and soul music's driving people insane.
Rock & soul, yeah it's the music got you walkin' down the street
Clappin' your hands, kickin' your feet, (Rock & soul)
Jumpin' up and down, oh, you're gonna be so outasite, rock & soul yeah.
Oh, you know we're al-almost, almost through.
You just gotta get one, one, one more little thing together here before we go.
Play your bass, son, c'mon, ah yeah c'mon, do it, ha!
Sock it to me
Sock it to me
Sock it to me.
Ah! your love is like a rainbow
I said, ha, ah your love is like a rainbow darling
You know your love is like a rainbow
I say hey your love is like a rainbow
Oh, runnin' all around my shoulders
Runnin' all around my shoulders,
You know that your uh love is like a rainbow
Now runnin' all around my shoulders, yeah, and I
Love you, you know I do, alright, huh.

These guys were very political. And purposefully irreverent."Country Joe" was originally a derogatory nickname referring to the young thuggish Josef Stalin. And "The Fish" refers to a Mao quote. They reveled in being in the face of the "Establishment". Their debut album "Electric Music For the Mind and Body" is the epitome of 60's psychedelia. I saw them live many times, always enjoyed them, although I groused a bit when the price of a ticket went to 5 bucks.

    B.... B....

I was under impression that "the fish" was just Barry's nickname. I'm not surprised to learn they had communist leanings tho

  16. M.... ....

I Frickin' LOVE this one. Played the sh*t out of this one! Thank you YouTube!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. s.... ....

    nice :)

  18. Q.... Z....

Dude, I totally agree.. I can only imagine how much great footage/music was left on the cutting room floor, especially from these guys. The recent 40th anniversary DVD has Janis and Airplane, as well as others... The Dead were playing during lightening and were getting short circuited so much of their music was low quality

  19. s.... r....

Woodstock was just the grand-daddy of one of many Pop festivals that occurred outdoors in 67, 68, 69, 70. Pop music was more than just about hippies. Sha na na was more of a fantastic visual comic relief stage act rather than great music at the time. Pop music took many forms and styles at the time. Monterey '67 was a little more mainstream hippie than woodstock. I agree that the movie shows less than half of the performers who played those 3 days - could have done a much better job.

  20. Z.... B....

Fuck off, no one wants to know what COUNTRY really is... We all very well know Country Joe is not country. If he was we wouldn't be listening. Country is shit...

  21. F.... P....

There is nothing COUNTRY about COUNTRY JOE.

If you want to know what COUNTRY really is: listen to Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, or David Allan Coe.

Country Joe is really just an r&b-loving, folk-singing Jew: Kosher Joe & The Gefilte Fish is a more appropriate name for this band.

    F.... P....

    "Kosher Joe"?

  22. D.... C....

Just to be clear, this is one of my favorite pieces of music all time, the comment was rhetorical. Your love is like a rainbow.

  23. G.... S....

Yes, but they made primarily Soul and Funk stuff. not really Psych Rock.

  24. S.... W....

    Sly ruled, thank you.

  25. e.... ....

Thanks for the info. Do you agree that they could have done a better job at picking the performers for the Woodstock movie in 1970? I mean CJ&TF def. deserve to be in the movie, i mean they were a big part of 60's, but sha na na, Sly & the family stone?? i don't see how they were associated with the whole hippie movement which is what Woodstock was mostly built on

  26. B.... H....

Michael Wadleigh directed the movie. Scorsese was Editor and assistant director at the siteThey played a long set after the rain. The opened with the love is like a rainbow section, and the reprised the whole song as the last song in the set. The Rhino box set has more of the set.

  27. e.... ....

I wonder if they actually did the entire song at woodstock and it was just edited out. Who ever edited that movie should have there head checked, every second of performance for all 3 days was recorded by Martin Scorsese and that was the cream of the crop?? It is good but not great in my eyes, what about Janis? The Dead (Dark Star, St Stephen, Love light all came out great), The Band, and so much more they should've chosen, why is Sha na na on the damn movie?????????

  28. t.... ....

    The 1960's weren't all about protesting.We had a good time too!Excellent song and album.Thanks.

  29. A.... M....

This is the ultimate song. YOUR LOVE IS LIKE A RAINBOW BABY, I LOVE You YOU KNOW I DO
