Counting Crows - Scarecrow Lyrics

Mary steers clear of the men from space
Back alley kid with an American face
She wants the wine, he brings a case
To carry them on through
I said you know what I know about the bedroom boys
Undercover Russians in a pink Rolls Royce
They bang the drum, she sets the beat
They carry Miss America out into the street
She sings, "snowman, scarecrow, john doe, buffalo"

I wish you wouldn't go
I got the arms to reach you, I am the scarecrow
Do do, do do do, do do, do do do
Oh, I guess you ought to know
I got the hands to teach you
I am the scarecrow, do do, do do do
Snowman sideshow, do do, do do do

I fell out of love in the snowbound days
Riding the subway in a Valium haze
I need the whites, she gets the blues
It carries us on through
All these American boys at the Park N Shop
Selling their memories for a dollar a pop
Ivan the ancient spaceman race fan
Corners the market on American taste
And says, "spaceman, scarecrow, peep show, freak show"

I wish you wouldn't go
I got the arms to reach you, I am the scarecrow
Do do, do do do, do do, do do do
Oh, I guess you ought to know
I got the hands to teach you
I am the scarecrow, do do, do do do
Punk rock video, do do, do do do

All the sudden the light inside you dies
Maybe you're going on alone
Maybe you're going all alone
She dreams of sunlight, sings of smaller things
White sugar bowls and wedding rings
You're going on from me alone
You're going on, you're on your own

She was married alive in a Moscow surgery
Hoping to die in a cold war nursery
All of the kids back home believe in much more than we do
It's a memory play where the memory fades
Into pictures you took, into records we played
Spy versus spy, scarecrow and I
Out across the darkness where the bomber jets fly
Singing, "spaceman, smoke show, scarecrow, Geronimo"

I wish you wouldn't go
I got the arms to reach you, I am the scarecrow
Do do, do do do, do do, do do do
Oh, I guess you ought to know
I got the hands to teach you
I am the scarecrow, do do, do do do
Snowman peepshow, do do, do do do

I wish you wouldn't go
I got the arms to reach you, I am the scarecrow
Do do, do do do, oh hell no, do do, do do do
Oh, I guess you ought to know
I got the hands to teach you
I am the scarecrow, do do, do do do
Listening on the midnight radio, do do, do do do

  5. D.... M....

    Amazing album, amazing!

  6. W.... ....

Tough thing for any band to do, capture the magic 20 years after their "peak"... this track is a good as anything they ever did. I think it would fit in well on Recovering the Satellites

  7. E.... M....

Buffalo Wild Wings always plays this song! i love it!

  8. J.... C....

I remember standing next to some guy in dreads at Saratoga Winners (a bar back in the 90s) thinking "who's this guy?" ..he got served before me...it was Adam.  20+ years later this guy can write lyrics like no other! This song is a testament to that. Keep writing man!

  9. J.... M....

Is excellente for example counting crows.......The best..

  10. E.... ....

Yeah! Super, enjoyed the video ! Music is the prime invention of our species isn't it? I'm very happy to be a musician!

  14. M.... W....

"All the sudden"?  Come on, CC!  Why is this non-phrase becoming a phrase!?!  It's "all of a sudden"!  Always has been!  READ A BOOK, KIDS!

    (P.S. love the song)

    M.... W....

lol songs aren't supposed to teach you proper grammar

    M.... W....

I'm a total grammar nazi, and the best I can hope for is that he's saying "All the 'sudden light' inside you dies..."  as in a light that came on suddenly then dims suddenly, too.

    M.... W....

    @Mike Wood
    "she don't want nobody near"

    M.... W....

Hey now, come on... that's different! That's a conscious use of colloquial type of speech... using double negatives for emphasis makes a hell of a lot more sense to me than just mishearing a phrase and spouting it incorrectly out of ignorance.

    M.... W....

    @Mike Wood

  15. g.... ....

I really like this song, it sounds a little like a lost B-side from August. That said, the only complaint I have with it is when they all say "BUFFALOOOOO!". It makes me picture in my mind them driving and seeing a buffalo and they're all slapping high fives and shouting about how rad that buffalo is

    g.... ....

You're complaining about having that image!?  Now I have it, too, and I think it makes the song better!  LOL

    g.... ....

@Mike Wood I agree and can't get enough of this song.  It took a little while ,but, it has really grown on me

    g.... ....

The buffalo is the key to all of this.

  16. J.... M....

    I'm glad they're back.

  17. j.... ....

If you don't like this song, don't worry.. it's the worst song off of the new album.  It's all up from here.

    j.... ....

I don't agree - the songs I keep skipping over (but may come to enjoy later, I'm sure) are God of Ocean Tides and Cover Up The Sun.  I love Scarecrow and for a moment there, it was my favorite track on the album.

    j.... ....

lol God of Ocean Tides is my favorite from the album, and I think it may be the best song Adam has written.

    j.... ....

I'm sure it'll grow on me, but it slows everything down for me.  I like the upbeat songs.

  18. k.... c....

    Nice song :3 congratulations C:

  19. P.... D....

Human beings continue to impress me. You either like the song or don't. lol

  20. d.... S....

Counting Crows new album out and the 5 days later Deacon Blue's new album!! Mr Marc Cohn news something new and I'm the happiest guy around!!
Crazy Lyrics Adam but I guess it helps! love it

  21. R.... E....

I think there are several issues with their new sound on this record. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to buy it of course and listen to it more and more. They have been my favorite band for 10 years strong afterall.

The problem is these new songs are too impersonal with unrelatable, often nonsensical lyrics. They have pretty melodies, but they just don't hit you as well as songs on past records, especially AAEA or This Desert Life.

Also, I really don't like the push to a more classic rock sound. It sounds like they are too inspired by Bruce Springsteen to me. They've been kind of moving more towards this sound over the past years, but I really prefer their alternative/pop produced sound they were tweaking with on their first 4 records. Oh well, I suppose those records will always be there for me too. I'm sure this will help them tap into a different audience.

    R.... E....

Dig deeper. The new songs are just as relatable as the old ones if you let them in  and create your own interpretations. This new album is no doubtably one of their best ever.

    R.... E....

I can agree on the Bruce Springsteen comparisons lyrically quite a bit, which is something I love, Bruce is arguably the greatest American Artist ever. Yet, when Bruce would, in his first two albums, use his vocabulary in I feel a more organized and less abstract way than Adam Duritz is doing on this album. Like Bruce would use crazy rhyme schemes and A LOT OF WORDS, he practically rapped Blinded By The Light, yet would also be contained and make sure people could get the idea. This album is rather cryptic, and I may be digging to deep into it but still. What I like on this album, that this is a mix of more Van Morrison(Counting Crows have always been Morrison lovers) and later Beatles Records. Sergeant Pepper and White Album influences are rather apparent if you listen carefully.

  22. e.... ....

the guitar Brian? Sounds like Tom Petty circa "Mary Jane's Last Dance" during the verses and Grant Lee Buffalo "Jubilee" era (also very Petty-esque) and it's no bad thing either. This is the first time I've looked forward to one of their records since "This Desert Life", I have the others but just not as good for me.

  23. H.... C....

The intro really reminds me of a another songs but I can't think which one.

    H.... C....

It reminds me of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Mary Jane's Last Dance intro.

    H.... C....

    sweet home alabama

  24. J.... S....

Love it and I can't wait between the new Weezer and new counting crows, I may start buying CD' s again!

  25. G.... K....

    I really love this song.

  26. R.... C....

Not gonna lie.  I watched this because I like to watch people do art, not so much because of the song.

  27. C.... ....

    Amazing song, amazing artwork....
    Just wow!

  28. J.... W....

Not a crow but has crow in the name. UHHGG

  29. 1.... ....

Listening to this and Palisades Park has become a daily routine for me =p

  30. J.... P....

    Just.. Awesome

  31. D.... ....

    I ♡ adam

  32. B.... H....

The guitar kind of reminds me of "Hanging Tree".

    B.... H....

    Except, you know, infinitely worse.

    B.... H....

I don't know about "worse".  I think the song's more abstract and less personal than anything they've done before, and it'll take some getting used to, but worse?  I don't know.

    B.... H....

    @njl4515 not true.

    B.... H....

@njl4515 Totally untrue.  This is a great song.  You're just here to troll.  Be gone wit' ye!

  33. N.... ....

THIS. Is music. More great work by a amazing song writer. Adam Duritz is extremely under appreciated.

  34. R.... Q....

I'm REALLY liking what I'm hearing from them recently. The new album's gonna be pretty tight if it lives up to this and Palisades Park.

  35. d.... ....

Really good...... back to your strengths - love it! Roll on the new album.

  36. D.... S....

Its  a grower but lovely as always

  37. c.... ....

    incredible.. as always

  38. D.... Z....
