Counting Crows - God Of Ocean Tides Lyrics

Close the door on a short night
Lift the lid on the daylight
6:09 West Tennessee time
And I buy all my days

At the same place where the girl sells her nights
To a God of ocean tides.

All night long,
Writing poems to California
Melodies of failure
And the people I have thrown away
Meanwhile, somewhere west of Carolina
In a congregation of strangers
We are digging holes to China
Then we pray to our reflections
In the water when it rises.

I said headlights pin the highway down
Jesus spins the world around
And I’ll spend all my tomorrows coming down
Goodbye all my days.
I know I said I never loved you
But I might just try again tonight.

Truck stops and river Gods
Gas stations of the Cross
Following a ghost,
Following a ghost,
I pray the water wash away
The memories and the cost.

Carry me south, to the sea
Along with your memories of me
We were born in the water
Now we'll return to Thee.

Colored lights
And birthday cakes
Candle wax
On paper plates.

Breathe the water
Hush-a-bye, hush-a-bye.
You can see through water
All the way up to the sky.

Gods of water, Gods of rain
Cover up the sun again
We are crossing it at the Mississippi line
And I tried all my days
To love you just the way you hoped I might,
But I’m leaving here tonight.
I can’t remember yesterday
I tried, if I said I could I lied.

Counting Crows God Of Ocean Tides Comments
  1. J.... D....

This guy is one of best Lyricist I have ever listen to.

Not so tidy up as Noel Gallagher's lyrics but there's more emotion in the lyrics and in the way the vocalist sing.

Say hello to Mr Jones if you see him hanging around.

  2. K.... A....

    Love this.

  3. J.... P....

Justin Verrnon, Adam Duritz.....repeat.......poets of our time....me, im thankfull........

  4. S.... A....

I pray the water wash away the memories and the cost...

  5. R.... S....

I like it but i wish he would sing not talk through it.still good though.

  6. J.... D....

Life was born of water upon the land, like rain from a clear blue sky. It was too hot for clouds yet...

  7. B.... C....

Some may come close, but nobody weaves musical stories quite like these guys. Nobody.

  8. A.... J....

    following a ghost...

  9. J.... S....

What's happened to the world when music like this never even gets time on the radio? Some of the most popular stuff today can hardly even be considered music, it's sad

  10. B.... ....

Saw this at their concert in St. Pete on July 31st, 2018. It was an outdoor concert and it started raining lightly when they started playing it. I recently went through a break up and I was trying to get him to reconcile. It was the first time I had ever heard this song and I was glad it was raining so no one could see me crying while it played.

  11. J.... L....

very poignant song. Great lyrics here.

  12. x.... x....

50 yrs old, cried 3 times in my life... 2 breakups with girlfriends and 1 for my mother's death. Add number 4...

  13. T.... L....

    this song makes me cry.

  14. N.... D....

This reminds me of May when I was in Nags Head NC for a week with my kids. In fact April or early May was the last time I watched this video. In anticipation of my vacation with my kids.

  15. S.... B....

This record is musically a lot like This Desert Life with that country rock feel but the topics of the lyrics are much, much more heartbreaking if you really pay attention to them.

  16. B.... H....

    My feels

  17. K.... N....

    Wow. Beautiful. Thank you

  18. J.... W....

Has anyone figured this song out? Still trying..

  19. H.... K....

I am desperately in love with this song.

  20. B.... ....

I keep coming back to this one. I know a lot of Counting Crows songs are about drugs, regret, loosing time, loosing friends, and the painful self awareness that accompanies all these feelings. Everything becomes washed out, deadened, and sort of equal. You watch your life flow by and the really tragic moments don't even seem to stand out anymore. This song actually kind of hurts to listen too, because it really makes me aware of my regrets and how, at the time, they didn't seem such a big deal.. due to either drugs or the depression that accompanies letting things go unattended. Its a beautiful song though, despite how painful it can be to listen too.

  21. D.... O....

I've been a fan since the beginning. this album was out a year before I heard it. Wow! a great album 25 years later. Rock on!

  22. S.... E....

My favorite beach in Malibu - Point Dume.

  23. K.... K....

    beautiful. :)

  24. T.... G....

What album is this off of.

    T.... G....

    Somewhere Under Wonderland :)

  25. C.... Z....

    yes my Adam & Crows

  26. A.... J....

I try to write and record songs and then I listen to and watch this band and the world seems harsh. If I live to be 1000 I could not make this sort of magic.

    A.... J....

It is nothing short of amazing. He is amazing. although, that last line is pretty great. maybe you should hold on to that.

  27. T.... S....

    A song about baptism?

    T.... S....

Toe Spam maybe more about the role religion plays in our lives and people's relationships with another because of it. Just my interpretation.

  28. A.... V....

I know I said I never loved you, but I might just try again tonight. Brilliant

  29. B.... ....

Least favorite album, but holy shit this song is like a wave of pure emotion.. it's almost overwhelming.

  30. S.... U....

this song makes me feel I'm on the beach I can feel the smell of the ocean

  31. T.... L....

Haunting. The video matches it in every way. I can't stop replaying it.

  32. R.... R....

    Beautiful pain

  33. B.... A....

This is my favourite track from the album. pure class!

  34. 2.... ....

Holy Cow!!!! Counting Crows are BACK!
This is the best sounding music/lyrics Ive heard in quite some time.

  35. M.... E....

the guitar part in the beginning sounds like "dust in the wind" by Kansas

  36. D.... C....

I'm seeing them tomorow night in concert. Gonna be a good show. My favorite band of all time.

  37. C.... G....

They're back. This whole album sticks to your ribs like oatmeal.

  38. S.... R....

    They're back.......

  39. D.... D....

What a great tune! Very thought provoking.

  40. A.... K....

I take solace in the fact that once history shines a light on all the great alternative bands to march out of the 1990's that The Counting Crows will be standing shoulder to shoulder with Pearl Jam as having never exploded, imploded or compromised their unique, yet ever expanding musical sound. What a truly wonderful band!

    A.... K....

Andrew Kovitch both my fab bands. Awesome

    A.... K....

Yes! Y'all both have great taste!

    A.... K....

It still hurts me that we lost Layne Staley so soon. Alice in Chains was up there with the best for me.

  41. D.... M....

Was lucky enough to catch this new album on Front and Center on a PBS channel. Was immediately hooked. Also spent a few sessions in palisades park.

  42. S.... C....

CC is by far my favorite band but I've been a bit disappointed with what they have put out since Hard Candy, although Saturday/Sunday had some gems for sure.  I don't really count Under Water Sunshine because it is their interpretation of another's work, they are as good as anyone at it though.  I can't tell you how thrilled I am about this album, every bit as good as there work from the 90's and early 2000's.  I've listened to it so many times since it came out and it still gives me chills, I even got a little misty eyed when I first heard this song it is so beautifully written.  Thanks Adam!!

  43. j.... ....

Just noticed this was filmed on my birthday, which is amazing because this is my favorite band, and this is my favorite song.. never even knew i had such an awesome birthday present

    j.... ....

    Candlewax on paper plates?

  44. M.... ....

Does anyone know the song "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas? Because the intro of this song reminds me that song a lot! :)

    M.... ....

MusicLover94 i was just thinking the same thing!

    M.... ....

    Its folk song.

  45. D.... D....

I'm glad to hear this new material; certainly the best in the last ten years. You gotta like the dreads. Someone needs to tell Adam that he looks like Governor Perry with his Smart Glasses on - makes him look much smarter. Adam will change out his glasses if he hears about the comparison. :>)

  46. M.... ....

Love this song.  Counting Crows never disappoints.

  47. C.... M....

Perhaps the best ballad of 2014. Brilliant lyrics, and an exquisite vulnerability in Adam's voice. Haven't felt that since Anna Begins.

  48. D.... W....

This album is blowing my mind more and more every time i listen to it. Amazingly brilliant. CC at their very best. x

  49. i.... ....

    beautiful video. i missed mali

  50. R.... ....

My favorite song from Somewhere Under Wonderland

  51. B.... P....

Duritz is the man! You can feel the emotion in his voice. In my opinion he is one of the most powerful vocalist of modern times.  Hope he didn't write this song from his heart, like usual, because this is a very heavy song. Adam tends to write from the heart and personal experiences...

  52. M.... B....

Jimmy Sturridge - If you think this is a love song I think you need to go back and listen to the lyrics man.

To me this song is about someone either dying or about to commit suicide. The "narrator" is revisiting all of the things in their life that they regret, either unfulfilment, mistakes or missed opportunities. Most likely a failed relationship with a girl he maybe didn't treat as well as he should have.

"All night long writing poems to California. Melodies of failure. And the people I have thrown away."

He is in a state of depression and possible drug use to sate his misery.

"And I’ll spend all my tomorrows coming down. Goodbye all my days."

He's realised that he treated her badly and wishes that he could go back and change things.

"I know I said I never loved you. But I might just try again tonight."

Maybe she died and that is the reason for his depression and brooding?

Truck stops and river Gods/Gas stations of the Cross/Following a ghost, Following a ghost/I pray the water wash away/The memories and the cost."

I feel that lyrically the last two verses in particular seem to evoke some kind of possible suicidal musings.

"Carry me south, to the sea
Along with your memories of me
We are born in the water
    Now we return to Thee.
    Colored lights
    And birthday cakes
    Candle wax
    On paper plates.

    Breathe the water
    Hush-a-bye, hush-a-bye.
    You can see through water
All the way up to the sky."

Perhaps he's going to drown himself? Or maybe she drowned. But I certainly think that this does evoke death of some kind, probably suicide. Particularly the pinultimate:

"I tried all my days/To love you just the way you hoped I might/But I’m leaving here tonight."

This is just my opinion dude, but I don't think this is a song about love, I do strongly feel that it is a song about death and (probably) a person about to kill themselves. Much like James Blunt's Your Beautiful, which is also often mistaken for a love song.

Adam is a very deliberate lyricist so I think this strong imagery is certainly intentional. I also think the song is brilliant by the way, and also highlights what an underrated songwriter Adam Duritz is. Again, just my opinion dude. That's the beauty of music I guess, interpretation.

  53. T.... ....

This song literally gave me goosebumps. So beautiful!

  54. I.... d....

Love Love Love them!  I get lost in his voice and music.

  55. .... W....

Old, good Counting Crows. Love the song !:)

  56. j.... ....

    I JUST CAME!
but seriously.. easily the best song from the new album.

Now give us that B-side of Suffocate you promised in 2008

  57. T.... v....

Was anyone else going in the first few seconds, like, ...I close..my eyes?

  58. T.... D....

Love it!  Guitar strings and heart strings.

  59. R.... ....

    Great!!!!

  60. k.... a....

So glad this new album is being released and has been made!!  I recently saw the band perform in Berkeley CA at the Greek amphitheater and they included a few of the songs off this new release.  They are my currant favorite band and Adam is an amazing story teller and song writer, not to mention his amazing voice.  They just get better and better as a band!  I loved their cover albums and love the new material.

  61. i.... ....

Amazing.  I can't wait for this album.

'Gas stations of the cross'... his lyrics are as perfect as ever

  62. M.... E....

Again we here the real Adam , sometimes an artist has long path till he finds his place, good he didn't give up!

    M.... E....

When you really are blessed or cursed with this gift, you must disappear to conceive and carry, to give birth again. Out of pain, out of experience. Real musicians are their music. It is true.

  63. B.... C....

This is my favorite from the new album til' the moment!  :)

  64. A.... M....

so glad a new album is alive. @CountingCrowsVEVO

  69. M.... ....

I don't know why but this brings me close to tears

    M.... ....

    xfactor5492

    M.... ....

Yah, to me it is a very sad song of saying goodbye to this world.

    M.... ....

I heard this song for the first time when I saw them play about a year ago. Just as they started playing it, it started raining lightly. The lyrics had me crying but of course you couldn't tell because of the rain. I had just gone through a break up and the pain was still fresh. "I pray the water wash away
The memories and the cost." That line hit me hardest.

  70. J.... A....

I first heard this when I went to see them in Nashville. Fell in love with it instantly. After all these years they still have it. Proud to call Counting Crows my favorite band.

  71. G.... D....

    pretty, introspective, and haunting

    - I want to be bob dylan

  72. J.... S....

They have totally lost it! There songs are all boring love songs... Bring back the 90's Round here and Mr Jones

    J.... S....

I have to disagree Jimmy. I have been a big fan from day one and love their older stuff, but I put this tune up there among their best!

    J.... S....

    J.... S....

@Jimmy Sturridge Thanks for playing Mr. Sturridge! I live in America therefore, i'm allowed to voice my opinion just as you. You shouldn't put your intelligence on display.

    J.... S....

You're a funny little man. Bu bye now little boy.

    J.... S....

But even if they're just love songs, they're still good, although I personally liked ``This Desert Life´´ best.

  73. t.... ....

    Brillant as usual !

  74. c.... ....

love how the video/scenery fits the song perfectly. what a masterpiece. this album is incredible!

  75. a.... ....

    Beautiful.

  76. K.... K....

Beautiful and poetic as always. I am so excited for this new album. I spent so much time forcing my ex-boyfriend to listen to you and listen to your lyrics. You became "our" band. And after we broke up two months ago, it became so hard to listen to you. But this album I haven't listened to with him yet and your music is helping me get over the past. You're all mine again.

    K.... K....
