Costello, Elvis - Withered And Died Lyrics
This cruel country has driven me down
Teased me and lied, teased me and lied
I've only sad stories to tell to this town
My dreams have withered and died
Kind thoughts in my head, kind voices to hear
Then I took up with a girl from the West
They'd run and hide, they'd run and hide
Count one to ten and she's gone like the rest
My dreams have withered and died
If I was a butterfly, lived for a day
I could be free just blowing away
On the waters so wide, waters so wide
Slip from the bed of a good friend of mine
My dreams have withered and died
Once I was bending the tops of the trees
Kind thoughts in my head, kind voices to hear
This cruel country has driven me down
Teased me and lied, teased me and lied
I've only sad stories to tell to this town
My dreams have withered and died
My dreams have withered and died
My dreams have withered and died

Costello, Elvis Withered And Died Comments
musk102 comes back to EC frequently for someone who thinks his singing is a joke. Have to agree on his high opinion of RT though.
With due respect to Elvis, this song was written by a far greater talent: Richard Thompson.
But I'm a CRITIC! As to RT's feelings, to quote the blessed Bob, "Money doesn't talk, it swears".
musik102: Why are you here if you don't like RT or EC?
Childe Harold: You and I need to form a Mutual Appreciation Society!
musik102 - you are of course entitled to your opinion and if you dislike both RT and EC's singing that's fine with me - BUT - not sure how you come to the decision that EC's singing is 'So manufactured' here on this track: would love it if you could explain - ta mate!!
musik102 - if you are a critic then I will assume you use language effectively and say what you mean. That given, I ask again (see comment above) how exactly EC's voice is manufactured here on this track? Since a manufactured sound implies the use of technology to create a particular sound, and EC sounds very natural - as if he just sang it live and it was recorded warts and all - which I prefer to the perfected overdubbed and pitch controlled pop music that is so prevalent nowadays.
Awesome. I've chased this tune round so many times, hitting again a few time but mostly missing.Mr. Costello nailed the notes so outside my own notes I'd normally think as a singer it sort of blows me away. It makes me realize again how much I totally don't care how political anyone is or isn't if they swing and voice. Wow. Awesome. I'd just kill to have this voice I think.
What a great song, it was the B-side to Peace in our time by The Imposter as I recall, I thought both tracks were great! Thanks for posting!!
Thank you much for posting this. A beautiful rendition of this song.
