Costello, Elvis - The Comedians Lyrics

I fell under such gentle persuasion
You can't refuse it's like a home from home
Meanwhile in the Motor car kingdom
They're finding that all that glitters is not chrome
The social circle have these cardiac complaints
Their hearts are empty when their hands are full
All these new found fond acquaintances
Turn out to be the red rag to my bull

[Chorus:]
And I'm up while the dawn is breaking
Even though my heart is aching
I should be drinking a toast to absent friends
Instead of these comedians

I've looked into these eyes upon reflection
They've seen the face of love, they've seen a few
What kind of love is this upon inspection
You'll be the last to know who's fooling who

[Chorus]

Costello, Elvis The Comedians Comments
  1. H.... ....

What is so hip is that his original demo and Roy Orbinson collab version is in 4/4 with a solemn 12/8 March feel underneath, and his subsequent release opens in 6/8, but quickly anchors in 5/4 for the Verses, changes to 6/8 for the Chorus, but reverts right back to 5/4 for the Interlude and Verses, and the Coda returns Coda back to 6/8 for the Finale. Me thinks Steve Naive (Royal Academy of Music London) might have had a considerable hand in this arrangement, but if it weren't for the fact that our hero Declan McManus [Elvis] wasn't so bloody well self-trained in just about every genre imaginable. He is a complete Musicologist whose' record collection dwarfs my own in LPs alone, and that factoid was gleaned from a rather old magazine interview from the late '80s. I can only imagine how large his physical music library might be today, although even measuring your libraries even in Gigabytes is now passe with streaming. But the greater point is that he actually knows more than most kids, and as a professional musician, and lifetime collector, I happen to know quite a bit. #Impressed #Genius
