Costello, Elvis - Mischievous Ghost Lyrics

She came dancing right before my eyes
She said she'd came to warn me
Before it dawned on me
I went walking on the blank hillside
Where the sunset falls
Where the sunset dies
She gave me love, she told me lies
That most mischievous ghost
She was in disguise, she was in disguise, she was in disguise.

He started to whistle, they bought him a flute
He was talking in tongues, they swore he was mute
He scoffed and blasphemed, they said it was beautiful
Busted a button, they bought him a suitcase full

They coloured him cricket and laced him up tight
As he drew on their days resurrected his nights
He raved in the dark, he went out in a blaze
"There you go," they said, "he's good for nothing and lazy"

With scandal and shame they slandered his name
They told him to freeze, they damned him to roast
Disappointed that he passed away peacefully
Never [trying/dying] to be a mischievous ghost

They dug him up quick with a polish and lick
They powdered him up till he only looked sick
The hinge in his backbone would bend to applause
But his dancing was not quite as lively of course

These are the rewards immortality affords
Bullied and bribed and beaten to bliss
[Harrington slacks/Harrods in slacks] and tormental laments
Of going away and not being missed

With scandal and shame they slandered his name
They told him to freeze, they damned him to roast
Disappointed that he passed away peacefully
Never dying to be a mischievous ghost

With the green beer and the shamrock tattoos
Singing his songs of the battles we lose
And [when/will] you come home again so we can murder you
What would you do if they took his word
With forty-eight million to join in the toast
Move over my darling
Mischievous ghost
Mischievous ghost

Costello, Elvis Mischievous Ghost Comments
  1. j.... r....

  2. M.... B....

grapes of wrath, Furore in italiano a masterpiece!

  3. J.... M....

First time hearing this and like the fusion.

  4. d.... ....

Grapes of Wrath...The Grapes of Wrath is the story of the Joad family, their journey to California, and the challenges they face trying to find work. By the end of the novel, Tom has gone into hiding, family members have died, and they are in a train car just about to be overcome by a flood.

  5. t.... ....

The Gorge?! My favorite music venue!

  12. N.... H....

These guys are one pair of baggy pants and shiny shoes away from being New Kids On The Block. Is it really that bright out there?

  21. R.... ....

    Great Costello! Top

  22. P.... W....

Costellos voice coming through in the chorus is very cool!

  23. T.... i....

standing in a field and talking to God.

  24. M.... S....

Looks like the Columbia River Gorge in the background. I wonder if this recorded pre-concert at the outdoor theatre known as the Gorge at George (Washington state)?

  25. L.... ....

There used to be a Mumford and Sons in Luton, England back in the 60's. It was a removal company. Does anyone know if there is/was a connection?

  26. J.... G....

Brilliant, half drunk campfire music !
    Must get a tent !
    And sticks.
    And matches.
    A sleeping bag.
Fuggit ! Stay safe and sound at home and crank it up !!

  28. L.... C....

MR Costello is with no doubt an absolutely exclusive songwriter. Only he should not sing his own songs, and be happy with royalties. Every time I hear him singing, I think about goats...:(

  29. N.... M....

Costello looking like Coen. Just brilliant

  30. F.... f....

Don't ever buy nothing from a man named truth

  31. A.... ....

Stumbled onto this by accident. I've been a fan of Costello since 1978 and Mumford since the first time I heard Little Lion Man.. they work very well together!

  32. C.... M....

    Is it just me,
    Or is Costello getting older,
    More handsome....
    With a Leonard Cohen
    Outline on his face.
    Fabulous message.

    C.... M....

    Yes, it's just you.

  33. C.... B....

Excellent match, love them both. The Ghost of Tom Joad is a moving and compelling song lyric. Watched Springsteen perform this song and brought me to tears. Excellent!! Love Mumford and Sons and Costello!! They are all beautiful song writers.

  34. L.... m....

    Woaw ! Amazing !

  35. s.... g....

Was Elvis just finishing his lunch?

  36. M.... S....

    Oh my God!

  37. P.... C....

    Magistral !

  38. G.... S....

It's alright, I guess - but please check out the source (been viewed far less!?): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi0kWe2ixzU

  39. T.... W....

Got mixed feelings about this... My grandpa hopped rails to California, from Arkansas, during the depression, to pick grapes... In the little town in northern California I was raised in (Burnt Ranch), all the families were from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas... I mean, I was raised by Tom Joad! I think I know what "cultural appropriation" feels like, now...

  40. R.... P....

Very cool, coming from a thrash metal fan.

  41. S.... ....

I like Bruces' stark version better but this is a decent cover

  42. P.... R....

Hahah nice song. But no campfires in ca.

  43. B.... D....

WOW! The band is shockingly bad in this video. The bass player clearly doesn't know the chord changes, everyone has to stop when Elvis starts to sing because they don't know the song and they fumble their way from there to the end. BOOOO! How about you practice it a couple of times before making the video or how about you do a song you know! The bass player needs to take some upright bass lessons if he's going to be pulling that out, his intonation is abysmal. SHAME Somebody (band manager) get it together. Poor Elvis.

  44. T.... B....

    he hasnt been well lately.

  45. L.... W....

Guthrie was active when Steinbeck wrote Grapes, but tha's the only connection I can make between the two songs here.

  46. G.... P....

One of Springsteen’s best later era songs. Nice treatment here.

  47. J.... G....

Trying to hear how De la Rocha sings it in Rage Against the Machine while they sing it

  48. G.... R....

I thought Elvis was pretty much a Gibson guy.... I’ve never seen him with a Martin...

  49. G.... R....

I’m going straight to the comments wondering what model E has? OM? 000-28? Looks like my 000-28 but binding not Herring Bone and fret markers are round...

  50. J.... D....

Anyone who does not know the story of Tom Joad, drop what you're doing and get yourself to the nearest library. They'll help you.

  51. S.... H....

Was this recorded in central Washington near the Gorge Amphitheatre?

    S.... H....

Definitely! You can see the back of the main stage in the beginning of the video.

  52. a.... f....

I cant here the bass, accordion, or backup vocals

    a.... f....

Thank god! They clearly don't know the song and when we do hear them they're playing the wrong chords.

  53. J.... L....

Great Song! You all play great together! Keep playing and singing! Love you all!

  54. G.... G....

Sounds like the music from a stevie Agnew song
It is so so much alike the wrecking yard

  55. A.... D....

    This is quite beautiful

  56. j.... b....

    this sucks

  57. J.... W....

    Love the stage

  58. A.... B....

Awesome performance. The worst part is the ghost of old Elvis Costello droning on about like a chode. What a condescending asshole. Mumford get away from him before you become not so cool...

  67. .... M....

  69. B.... Z....

    ...Paradise..

  70. J.... C....

Unemployment in late 2018 fluctuated between 3.7 and 3.9.  Highway is alive tonight with the gainfully employed in well kept vehicles.  Some are on the way to work and some are on the way to affordable pleasures.

  71. .... ....

Ну это ж надо быть таким скучным и предсказуемым чуваком как Элвис Костелло

  72. P.... M....

Funny how we sing the same songs over and over again like our intelligence is drained now we kind of worship these carnies that sing other people songs

  73. C.... R....

    Love the tunes

  74. Z.... C....

It's an interesting interpretation, but I wish the vocals were more appropriate. The guy from Mumford & Sons is extremely bland.

  75. D.... C....

    Instant classic!

  76. C.... L....

For fans of the dust bowl era https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqZiDqnTJn4&t=29s

  77. C.... D....

Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce. Only recently read "The Grapes" for the first time after reading about Bruce's Tom Joad. I'm a 60+ Brit but it's a very, very good read

  78. N.... C....

    so so good

  79. E.... ....

I've watched this a ton, but I just noticed how chapped his lips are lol

  80. M.... C....

    fusion...

  81. B.... W....

I think he misplaced the heart on his sleeve. I wear mine but ain't lost it yet

  82. K.... N....

I love it!!!!! Left out Florida......no big deal

  83. c.... ....

Woody Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen, two of the great chroniclers of the plight of the poor and marginalized in America! Brilliant treatment by these British blokes.

  84. D.... C....

    Woody's ghost still lives on

  85. T.... S....

    Hi I'm
    TOM
    the Ghost baby...

  86. B.... P....

    🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

  87. E.... J....

These days I wonder if the ghost of Tom Joad is with the caravan of people on the road in Mexico, bound for the northern border.

    E.... J....

They didn't have to heat up a can of soup on a camp fire. From what I understand, they had food & water delivered to them. 😊👌
    🍔🍟🍗🍉🍅🍓🍞🍕🌭🍷🍵🍮

  88. D.... B....

Heard that Springsteen didn't read the book before writing this song.

  89. C.... B....

Too many sunglasses . Nice song like

  90. S.... P....
