Cooder, Ry - The Prodigal Son Lyrics

Now, the prodigal son was a forward child, his mind was not to obey
But after he left his father's house he thought he had gone astray

I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
And be a servant of the Lord

His father saw him coming he met him with a smile
He threw his arms around him saying this is my darling child

I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
And be a servant of the Lord

The father asked the prodigal, son, why you've been gone so long?
One day you sold out the world and forget your happy home
The prodigal said, I searched for true religion, but no faith and no peace could I find
Until I came to a little place called Bakersfield, that eased my troublin' mind

I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
And be a servant of the Lord

I wandered into a tavern where a music band was playin'
The steel guitar rang out so sweet, I feel like I was prayin'
And I asked a comely waitress, is this a new teaching
She said there is no God but God, and Ralph Mooney is his name
I said, let me empty your ashtray, Mr. Mooney, if the drunks interfere I'll be sad
But just as long as you sit there on the bandstand and play your guitar like Buddha, I'll be glad
The father asked the prodigal, did you smell the sweet perfume and hear the angel band?
He said, dim lights, thick smoke, and loud, loud music is the only kind of truth I'll ever understand

I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
I believe that, I believe that I will go back home
And be a servant of the Lord

Enjoying your sound bro! Looking up your clips. Going north. Thinking to take your sounds on the road with me if there is an agreeable way with you. Headed upline. Bout time I found my mainline.

  13. I.... M....

i almost had a nervous breakdown in the last hour. i had this weird polyphonic riff in my head "which song is this? omg who is it? how will i find out now?"
then lightbulb:" ohhhh it's Ry - it HAD to be him." then i put the song again and add to all the playlists i have.
funny... at first i was like "cool song".
it blooms in you, like his notes out of those weak and out of phase pickups dirtied up.

  14. D.... A....

Only 275 wankers. Cool. Ry rocks.

  15. D.... P....

That sax sound is really puzzling me. I've never heard anything quite like that.

    D.... P....

I guess he's playing through an harmoniser thus giving the impression of playing a synth.

  16. P.... P....

Great great guitarist - sure nuff n yes I do with Beefheart, Sister morphine with the Stones, memo from turner with Mick Jagger, his own version of I think it's gonna work out fine, and many more

  44. T.... T....

Don't know who the best is but the list is short.

  45. j.... t....

I hope the fates never cross my path with any of the 252 MORONS that didn't like this song. :-)

  46. R.... F....

The Beatles, Hendrix and Ry Cooder taught everyone how to do it.

  47. l.... c....

Secular music (non christian) often sounds good, touches the emotions, even stirs the soul but ultimately takes us nowhere of lasting value. Only a life laid down for Christ our risen saviour can truly represent God and compose, sing and play worship that expresses life that is eternal, full of godly truth
and redemption. Ry your playing is hot your vocals are strong but without Jesus as Lord of your life the gates of heaven are barred to you.

    l.... c....

You only get one shot at life don't squander it by believing you have two.

  48. A.... F....

    Ry-fantastic-Coo(l)der

  49. R.... C....

People need to watch this Saxophonist too. Crazy effects and swells. Really adds to Ry's rhythm mastery. Also, the WHOLE band. God damn it.

  53. R.... J....

    FANTASTIC!!!!!!

  54. B.... B....

Ryland Cooder is a translator...a perpetual student. We could all aspire to be translators and perpetual students. He distills the steam from the American cauldron and condenses the essence. What, what? Over 200 dislikes on this piece?
Who's got their taste in their mouth?

  58. W.... P....

    Ry Cooder, an American icon.

  59. s.... ....

As I write this comment there are almost 10,000 "likes" registered for this video. But there also 240 "dislikes".

A quick question for the haters involved: Is your opinion based upon what you "hear", or what you have been taught to "believe"?

Or maybe is it simply ovine backlash aimed at an outspoken veteran artist who is repeatedly on record as opposing the fascist, xenophobic, racist currently in controversial residence in the American White House.

We in the rest of the world are desperately trying to understand any actual "thinking" that might be involved here.  🇨🇦✌️💔💔 💔

  60. F.... Z....

    Number one !

  61. T.... G....

    The Master

  62. S.... B....

Sounds fantastic, its just i can hear a keyboard and can't see the player.

    S.... B....

  68. A.... K....

Most underrated blues guitar player in the world and a true Master.

    K.... K....

He's not more under rated than Robin Trower!
    Hah ha!
Who claims title to the The Most Under Rated?
    The under rated duelists!

  72. B.... M....

Ry's encomiums are all deserved. But the drummer should get at least an honorable mention for his contributions.

    B.... M....

    That's RYs son I believe

    B.... M....

is it his son? Was in one of the other Utube cuts.

    B.... M....

@kkpaine This drummer is Ry's son . At the beginning , when he was about 12 years old , he plays percussions with his father and David Lindley in 1990 . You can find videos on youtube .

    B.... M....

As every musician in this group ...

  77. T.... G....

Superb - anybody know how he gets that thick , soupy tone ? I love it ! I can see there`s just a humbucker in the middle position on the Strat , but any other information would be most welcome.
