Contortionist, The - 1979 Lyrics

Shakedown 1979
Cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet

Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all

And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

Double-cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slipping dues down to see

That we don't even care as restless as we are
I feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go
Beneath the sound of hope

Justine never knew the rules
Hung down with the freaks and ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it to see

That I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

The street heats the urgency of now
As you can see there's no one around

    *THAT IS PRESTINE*

  6. M.... D....

Only these guys can make this song work out of the style these guys have!

  11. S.... S....

    This is so good

  12. 9.... ....

I love this!!! Now I want to see someone make a good music video for this cover *{::>_<:}*

  13. N.... S....

Last time I heard anything from these guys they were a deathcore band. Crazy how much they've changed

    N.... S....

While it's pretty much just this song that's THIS mellow, they've certainly evolved to be far more than just any deathcore band. Started following them from when they put out Language, and boy, I think they're among the most inspired writers in all of modern prog. The songs from this EP really show off their diversity.

    N.... S....

I always thought the Jonathan period of Contortionist was more epic and poetic, whereas Mike’s will be more personal and moving. “Sweeping versus sentimental”, if that makes any sense

Also: Chris Tilley, where did you go :(

  14. K.... K....

When TV had music... great cover. Downward Spiral next!!

  15. M.... P....

Boy George & George Michael next!

  16. A.... T....

I am beyond happy about this, sends so many goosebumps down my spine. Best way to start the week, makes me like Mondays a bit more.

  17. 1.... ....

    even this.

  18. J.... P....

Great cover version of this awesome tune

  19. A.... W....

"lets do it exactly like the original, only I'll sing with a british accent haha that will be so tight!"

  20. F.... ....

this actually rivals the original. Great job!

  21. s.... ....

This is an awesome cover. I feel like these guys could do anything and make it sound good. I love the change in their sound as much as people complain about it. For all we know, the next album could go back to more of an Exoplanet style. I doubt it, but they’re full of good surprises.

  22. K.... O....

    Bad Rabbits did it best

  23. s.... ....

    1979 (Reimagined)

    s.... ....

Plz I would love to see that too!

  24. b.... o....

i dont usualy like this sort of cover but its so kool the way they did this with that dark aura

  25. J.... I....

cool now do Zero and that will make my wife happy

  26. C.... O....

Interview with a vampire, was actually based on Billy Corgans life.

  27. C.... O....

Oh and great job on the vocals. Its hard to sing like Billy Corgan, when you aren’t a vampire.. like Billy Corgan.

  28. A.... F....

Ok. I will never need the original ever again

  29. G.... B....

Guys have come a long way since Exoplanet. Like two different bands. Both great, though--not complaining. Variety is the spice of life and all that.

    Great cover.

    G.... B....

Graham Barth i wouldn’t say two different bands. what i would say is a band with many identities. i heard the identity shift in the Apparition EP alone. they are the true sense of a progressive band, right behind DT of course.

    G.... B....

Andrew victorino You saw a “shift” to Smashing Pumpkins covers inside Apparition??

    G.... B....

As an Exoplanet addict, my feelings about the band are kind of like if your favorite pizza place turned into a great ice cream parlor lol

Sure it’s not what you wanted, but nobody can deny its pure quality for the target audience regardless. I guess we just have to deal with change 🤷‍♂️

    G.... B....

    @Corpsefoot Gaming well said

  30. C.... M....

    This>original

  31. A.... H....

This is the most 4/4 thing The Contortionist will ever play.

    A.... H....

    @Corpsefoot Gaming the mega oof

    A.... H....

@Corpsefoot Gaming God forbid music be catchy, I guess?

    A.... H....

Spicy McHaggis Language was catchy enough.

Some of their newer stuff is just bordering on dumbed-down radio music, at least on the first playthrough

    A.... H....

    @dawsonw128 hahaha thank youuuu

    A.... H....

Most of the music in their first several albums is 4/4, right?

  32. S.... G....

We fucking love you guys! <3

  34. L.... S....

Never liked Smashing Pumpkins growing up, this version is better, no hate.

  35. D.... C....

I was brought to tears and still cudnt stop my face from leaking i love hearing these guys and watching these guys perform! This has settled my morning

    D.... C....

    me too mate

  36. G.... L....

    Fucking Magic...

  37. S.... ....

Great cover, lots of little “updates” that I really enjoyed. I think the original captures magic more, and I probably prefer the production and vocals on it, but this is a pretty fantastic cover nonetheless; very faithful to the original.

  38. k.... ....

It sounds great, but isn't this more just the contortionist playing a smashing pumpkins song than an actual cover?

    k.... ....

    Are...are you dumb?

    k.... ....

What exactly is your definition of a cover then?

  39. M.... ....

I am a hardcore Smashing Pumpkins fan , this is One of the best SP cover i've ever heard.

  40. S.... ....

This cover is actually fucking incredible. I'm so glad you guys recorded it so I could experience it again after hearing it live!!!

  41. S.... B....

I started listening to this expecting to get mad about a poor cover of a great song.

Instead, I got the opposite. Bravo, lads. Bravo.

    S.... B....

    Exact same.

  42. M.... D....

This is a James Iha 1979, equally beautiful.

  43. P.... ....

    I LOVE IT! <3

  44. d.... w....

Wow didn't expect i would love this more than the original

  45. W.... ....

Woulda preferred a cover of mayonnaise but

  46. I.... n....

I feel young with this cover, like a fresh breeze in the morning, thank you so much guys!

  48. G.... S....

this song is pure classic... Pumpkins forever!

  49. A.... S....

Is permission necessary to make a cover? Cuz I’ma need to have a lil talk with Billy if he legitimately allowed this...

    A.... S....

You just need to pay royalties. Billy probably doesn't know this amazing band exists lol.

    A.... S....

    This covers good

  50. C.... O....

now you know how talented the smashing pumpkins are. it took a technical jazz metal band turned soft prog, to cover it correctly.

  51. t.... ....

too autotuned, too clean, too perfect

billy corgan’s voice is less clean and more raw, which makes the song more human

  52. T.... K....

Man, the Smashing Pumpkins singer has a very underwhelming voice. I think Michael Lessard just made this song sound great.

  53. a.... ....

THIS IS HOW YOU DO A COVER! THE CONTORTIONIST IS GREAT!

  54. E.... ....

This song pushed my shit back in

    E.... ....

I meant that in a good way though. 😋

  55. B.... W....

I enjoy the transition from verse to chorus much more in this version. Well done

  56. J.... W....

Guys, seriously. This is so cool. The original is cool, but this is like really cool.

  57. R.... S....

    gosh wow i love this

  58. J.... B....

    Amazing cover, stellar ep

  59. I.... P....

decent enough, i think it shows the power of billy''s songwriting, that any passable cover will still conjure the same emotions.

  60. D.... R....

Huge Pumpkins fan. The original is in my top songs of all time but this is a great cover.

  61. J.... S....

Thank you for reviving one of my favorite songs and bands from my childhood. I think it also means more to me that you guys are the band covering this. I also love that “our bones” is a lyric mentioned here and in follow.

  62. O.... i....

    Oh my god.

  63. S.... G....

Can you guys do any wrong??

  64. D.... L....

This makes me feel nostalgia in the most beautiful way imaginable. My heart is so full from this, thanks fellas. ❤️

  65. G.... ....

Just found out i paid for a Smashing Pumpkins cover preordering the vinyl.. and i fucking hate Smashing Pumpkins!

  66. v.... e....

    Just beautiful

  67. A.... B....

Ohh Mikey Lessard!! Man this is delicious 💖🙌

  68. H.... ....

Michael Lessard's voice suits this song perfectly. This is The Contortionists' "All Along the Watchtower" moment. Beautiful work.

    H.... ....

Heinrick192 offering no opinion to whether or not this is a good cover, Hendrix’s cover of Watchtower was a complete reworking of the tune that bore no resemblance to the original. This cover is very akin to the original. I’m not sure your analogy is appropriate. Or perhaps I am misunderstanding your intent.

    H.... ....

btfa2020 think he’s just trying to say he prefers this one to the original, like most prefer the Hendrix version of all along the watchtower

    H.... ....

@btfa2020 It's just mindless fanboy drivel.

  69. r.... b....

I’ve honestly never liked the original, but the cover is as amazing as I’d ever expect from Lessard-era The Contortionist.

  70. R.... M....

    🔥fucking lit🔥

  71. n.... ....

Took something great and made it better, so good it's unfair!

  72. D.... H....

As a huge pumpkins fan, I always thought their legacy would be their song writing more than their performances.

    D.... H....

Doug Herbert These lyrics simply blew me away

I always kept the band at a cautious distance because of the singer’s voice-cracking and his weirdo vibe in general, but I was clearly missing out on some godly songwriting at the very least lol

  73. A.... P....

    This is beautiful

  74. F.... ....

    This is fucking great

  75. K.... B....

I was so surprised to hear this, it made me so happy!

  76. H.... H....

All i gotta zay ia gad damn

  77. J.... G....

    This is awesome!

  78. K.... B....

    I love this

  79. J.... ....

You know when they put shitty, uninspired renditions of once great songs on commercials, movies, ads, etc? Well this isn't one of them. Instant classic hit of an older song. Fantastic capturing of the essence of the original and dare I say, blooming a unique beauty all its own. This earns the right to a soundtrack a movie.

    J.... ....

??? It's faithful to the original to a fault. It's very competently done, but fairly uninspired and generic with only a few additional flourishes here and there. Give me the original with the Pumpkins and Billy Corgan character any day.

    J.... ....

@maynardburger they never said that it was better than the pumpkins version so you can get off your high horse kid.

  80. J.... H....

    Awesome as always!

  81. D.... J....

Love it guys! The vocal delivery of the line "to dust, I guess" in the last chorus is my favorite part.

    D.... J....

Dave Jolly them harmonies take you to flavor town my guy

    D.... J....

    Dommie Lama hahahahahaha

  82. d.... ....

    the cover art is amazing.

  83. R.... R....

I’m like in love with this. I love sp but you guys took it to a whole new level, but kept it so level and subtle. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

  84. A.... M....

    1979 ebb and flow too.

  85. T.... F....

I won't even listen to the original anymore because of hearing it way overplayed. This version is better in my opinion and refreshing to hear.

    T.... F....

    Tony Farris
No it's not better at all but I get your point.

  86. N.... ....

Heard this back in November when I first saw you guys. That cover was stuck in my head the whole week.

  87. D.... A....

    wooow amazing, dat voice

  88. R.... ....

Amazing definitely my favorite jam of this year

  89. H.... N....

No other band in the world can do this better

    H.... N....

@Depends On How You Say It. wich band?, or the singer name.

    H.... N....

    @Luis Cano Bad Rabbits.

    H.... N....

@Depends On How You Say It.man, it's a great cover, strong, with energy, could it be "better" because his vocal range but, like a cover is just good, however Michael has this thing, this calmness and nostalgia in his voice, I prefer the contortionist but that guy did a great job.

    H.... N....

@Depends On How You Say It. btw, I'm a man haha

    H.... N....

@Luis CanoYeah, I wasn't trying to take anything away from Michael.

  90. l.... S....

    Absolutely incredible. 10/10

  91. E.... m....

Guys you always give me back the hope in everything. You always make my day. Thanks 4 exists

  92. D.... ....

Why is every song you guys make so good

  93. j.... G....

Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below :3

  94. H.... ....

Favorite pumpkins song. This is gorgeous. Thanks for another great release guys

  95. T.... R....

I love how the lyrics line up perfect with the conception of the EP even so much as supplying the lyrics for the title of the EP

  96. K.... F....

    This cover is spot on

  97. T.... P....

Thank you for getting me through the worst month of my life.

    T.... P....

Tony Parker right there with you man. Keep fighting the good fight

    T.... P....

Worst month of your life so far. Things get worse, they always do.

    T.... P....

@Auden Biaowl Things usually get better also. The more you believe in it the better. More it helps. More you help yourself making things turn better. By opost, if u assume things will become worse, then you are already opening way for that. Think about it.

    T.... P....

@David McDonald It seems you care alot of how others see you, but not as much as you see yourself. Knowing yourself, your own limits, weaknesses and strenghts it's the ebst way for in the end you overcome difficulties. I guess in some way you get stronger, a more stable feeling. The way you refer it i see it more like a facade. We need to deal with our own feelings, weaknesses, so that we may understand it.

    T.... P....

@Manuel Tavares by showing weakness you allow others control. remain in control and never relinquish it. caring what others think is weak.
