As beautiful a song as was ever written. Irving Berlin always claimed he never wrote songs from his personal emotions, but there were two exceptions and this was one of them.
When Irving was 24 he got married and was naturally thrilled and happy. However only 6 months later his wife died of typhoid fever contracted while on their honeymoon in Cuba. This was song he wrote to express the immense sadness that enveloped him at the time.
